The preliminary trial of D. F. Buntley, charged with first degree murder in the fatal shooting of Ernest (Cap) Anderson of Murfreesboro, on Saturday afternoon in an altercation over some lumber, was held Monday afternoon in the Circuit Court room, in the Justice Court presided over by Esq. Henry Jones.
The defendant, represented by Hon J.D. Murfpee and L. G. Haugland claimed self defense. Esq. Jones bound Buntley over to the Circuit Court grand jury which convened Tuesday with bail set at $5,000.
Mr. Callie Anderson, Born June 23, 1849, died Sunday afternoon following an illness of several weeks.
Mrs. Anderson resided with her cousin, George Reaves on Cannon Boulevard. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, a good neighbor and took much pride in the beautification of her home place with flowers until her health failed.
Mr. Reaves is her sole survivor.
Funeral services were held at the grave in Willow Mount Cemetery Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock conducted by Rev. N.J. Warren.
Pallbearers were B.S. Hart, Sam Gammill, O.L. Gammill, W.L. Gammill, John Patton, and Turner Hardison.
Mrs. Jane Bradford, 88 wife of the late Nathaniel Bradford, died Tuesday morning, March 2 at the home of her son Dave Bradford. Mrs. Bradford had been ill a few days with double pneumonia. She was a devout member of the Baptist Church and had many friends who mourn her passing.
Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday, February 3, at 1 p.m. with Rev. Claude Lewis officiating. Interment was in Willow Mount Cemetery.
Surviving are three sons Dave, E. C., and Jim Bradford; one daughter, Mrs. Kate Sanders, of Diana; two brothers N.C. Poarch, and Thomas Poarch of Nashville; twelve grandchildren, Clarence, Raymond and Robert Bradford, David and Irene Bradford and Mrs. Jenette Nelson of Shelbyville; Buford Sanders of Old Hickory; William Sanders of Lewisburg; Paul Sanders, Mrs. Fred Tom Pyles, Mrs. Ernie Holly of Diana, and Mrs. Fred Cochran of Lewisburg; eleven great grandchildren.
Mrs. Mary Moore Cannon, 73, widow of the late Taylor Cannon, died Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the home of her daughter Mrs. Bryan Foster and Rm. Foster about four miles from Shelbyville , near Deason.
Mrs. Cannon was taken ill with influenza and developed pneumonia. She was sick about a week.
The deceased was a member of a prominent pioneer Bedford County family and resided at Singleton until recent years she has been making her home with her daughter, Mrs. Foster. She had been a member of the Christian Church at Singleton since youth.
Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock, rev. E. J. Barnett officiating. Interment was in Willow Mount cemetery.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Foster, Mrs. Gladys Moore, Petersburg; Mrs. Jennie Roberts, Raus; two sons, Capt. Mike Cannon and Everette Cannon, Columbia and several grandchildren.
Clyde Claxon, 24 died Tuesday Dec 29, 1936 at the Bedford County Hospital. Stricken with Pneumonia, he was unable to withstand the attack. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 o'clock at Hoover's Funeral Home. The body was laid to rest in Willow Mount cemetery. He is survived by his parents, Mrs. and Mrs. Mellie Claxon, four brothers, Woodland, George, Fred and Alex Claxon and one sister Helen Claxon.
Arch Frizzell 80, former postmaster at Bell Buckle, died Tuesday night at the home of his brother, Jesse Frizzell, near Bell Buckle. Mr. Frizzell was twice married, first to Miss Charlie Sutton and after her death, to Miss Maudie Kendrick, who died several years ago. Funeral services were conducted at Hazel Cemetery Wednesday afternoon, March 17, 1937, by Rev. A. T. Tipps.
Mrs. Ray Gowan, 36, used chloroform and strychnine to take the lives of her two infant children and herself Tuesday, at her home at Flat Creek. Her husband, returning to the house from out on the farm found her in bed with the two children, the covers pulled over her head. She and the children, all unconscious, had rags saturated with chloroform over their faces.
The mother had recovered form the effects of the chloroform and was conscious when physicians arrived Dr. Pice Womack, first to reach the house, said she had chloroformed the babies and then had taken strychnine and administered chloroform to herself. She died a few minutes later. Dr. Womack said the babies - Sara Jean 2 1/2 and Ray Jr. four months - had been dead about 20 minutes when he arrived.
Mrs. Gowan left a note in whch she said she "wanted to die" and had been "planning it for some time." IN the note she also said that clothes for the children to be buried in woudl be found laid out on a bed at the home of her father-in-law.
Sheriff W. A. Brown said that relatives blamed the act on despondency following severe burns which Mr. Gowan suffered last year, after which she remained in the hospital for several months.
The Gowans had been staying with Gowan's father, Finn Gowan a short distance from their home for several weeks. At 2 o'clock this afternoon Mrs. Gowan insisted on returning to her own home.
The husband, who did not know his wife had returned home, said when he approached the house about 4 o'clock he smelled chloroform, and investigating, found his wife in the bed. He carried her to the porch, and summoned aid, before he discovered that the two children were under the covers.
Surviving in addition to her husband, are her father, John Harrison, stepmother, and a brothe, all of the Raus community, and a sister, Mrs. Kelis Winters of Nashville.
The bodies were brought to Caleb Thompson Funeral Home where a special casket was secured for the three bodies, which was the request of the deceased in the note she left.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. this morning at the home of Finn
Gowan, with burial in the Flat Creek cemetery.
William David Holden, age 83, died at his house on South Brittain street at four o'clock on last Saturday afternoon. About six years ago he became an invalid as the result of a broken hip received in an automobile accident.
Previous to the removal of his family to Shelbyville eight years ago, he had been engaged in the mercantile business at Midland, Christiana and Wartrace. He was highly regarded by many friends and acquaintances who regret his passing.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Lucy Barnes Holden, three daughters; Mrs. Weaver Eubanks, Philadelphia, Pa: Miss Jane Holden Cranberry, N.J.; Mrs Bailey Rascoe, Nashville, Tenn; one son; Hatton Holden, Jackson Tenn and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at the Thompson Funeral Home at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, by Rev. N.J. Warren, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, of which Mr. Holden was a member. Interment was made in Midland Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Ed Troxler, Phil Scudder, Jesse Evans, Clark Robinson, J.C. Tune, Jim Parsons, James Whiteside and C.L. Shoffner.
The funeral of W. M. Holden, 86, who died at his home at Rockvale Monday night, was held Tuesday at four o'clock with burial at the Holden family cemetery near Christiana.
Mr. Holden, well known farmer and member of a prominent family in Middle Tennessee, died after a short illness, being stricken on last Friday.
He is survived by one daughter Mrs. Allen Hart of Shelbyville; two brothers, F. D. Holden of Rockvale and B. Holden of Murfreesboro.
The Rev. James W. Dancer, pastor of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Murfreesboro, conducted the service.
Mrs. Sara Jane Hoover, 50 died Wednesday night, February 3, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lester Curtis, of the Powells Creek neighbourhood. Mrs. Hoover had been in declining health for some time and died from a complication of diseases. She was a member of the Church of Christ and worshiped at the Powells Creek schoolhouse Sabbath services. She was a consecrated Christian, true friend and a loving and dutiful wife and mother.
Funeral services were held Thursday 1:30 p.m. at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Curtis, with whom the deceased and her husband lived. Rev. Allen King of Richmond assisted by Rev. J.H. Hines, officiated. Burial was in the Coleman graveyard at Powells Creek.
Survivors are her husband, Sidney Hoover; five daughters, Mrs. Cecil Thompson, of Paletto; Mrs. Lester Curtis, Mrs. Roy Curtis, Mrs. Bessie Hunnicutt and Miss Rena Hoover, of Powells Creek; and two sons, Luther and Clarence also of Powells Creek; four sisters, four brothers and seven grandchildren.
William Joseph Mosley, 82, native of Shelbyville, died Saturday following an illness of several months, at the home of his daughter Mrs. T. Neal in Nashville. For forty-nine years Mr. Mosley had been chief engineer of the Maxwell House Hotel. He was a member of the National Association of Power Engineers, a retired Mason and a member of the Tulip Street Methodist Church.
Funeral services were held at the home Monday, Rev. John R Stewart officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Surviving are two sons, Charles and George; one daughter, Mrs. T.W. Neal; a sister, Mrs. Mary Corcoran of Memphis, and thirteen grandchildren.
Mrs. Belle Smith Victory, 56 died at the Bedford County Hospital Friday morning following several months illness. She was the daughter of Sam and Maria McDaniel Smith and the widow of the late Fain Victory of Fosterville. She was a member of the Fosterville Church of Christ.
Funeral services were held at the Fosterville Church of Christ Saturday afternoon at 2:30 with Eld. Clyde Gleaves officiating. Burial was in the Smith Cemetery in Fosterville.
Surviving are three sons, Robert Victory of Shelbyville, Hayes Victory of Fosterville and Isaac Victory of Gary, Ind; three sisters, Mrs. Florence Williams and Mrs, Betty Tucker of Christiana, and Mrs. Roy Smith of Nashville; four brothers, Joe and Sam Smith of Fosterville, Grover Smith of Nashville and Isam Smith of Las Vegas, Neb., and one grandchild.
Mrs. Martha Ann Sudberry Wheelhouse, 89, died Thursday at her home near Center Grove. She had been in declining health for some time. Mrs. Wheelhouse was a member of the Blankenship Methodist Church, a consecrated Christian, true friend, loving and dutiful mother.
Funeral services were held at the home Friday, 2 p.m. Rev C.F. Belew officiating. Burial was in the Blankenship cemetery. Survivors are two daughters, Misses Cassie and Ida Wheelhouse, one sister, Mrs. Tennie Wallace, Waco Texas.
