John M Bittick, well known retired salesman, died at his home in Tullahoma Wednesday evening after a long illness. Funeral services were held at the family residence, Friday morning, conducted by Dr. J.W. Cherry, pastor of the Methodist church in Tullahoma.
The remains were brought to Shelbyville and laid to rest in the family plot in Willow Mount Cemetery.
Mr. Bittick and his family were former residents of Shelbyville and they have many friends here who sympathize with the family in their bereavement.
Mr. Bittick was a member of the Methodist church. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Estill Green Bittick; two daughters, Misses Pauline and Irene Bittick, and three sons, Douglas, Clarence and William Bittick.
Rev. Andy Largen of Fayetteville conducted the funeral of Horace J. Bobo Friday afternoon at New Hermon. Horace Bobo met a tragic death at his home Thursday afternoon. He went to put a horse in the barn and his mother seeing the horse loose, went to the barn to see about the little boy when she found the lifeless form lying in the doorway. It is thought the horse kicked the child. The news of his death cast a glom over the entire neighborhood. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mr. L.F. Bobo, three brothers and a sister.
Mrs. Bettie Phillips Brown died Friday afternoon at her home on the Stephens road, 4 miles from Shelbyville. Mrs Brown was ill only a short time, and her death was a shock to the neighborhood. Funeral services were held at the El Bethel Baptist church, of which she was a devoted member. Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. W. C. Creasman, pastor of the First Baptist church of Shelbyville. The remains were laid to rest in the Brown graveyard.
Mrs Brown is survived by one son Roy Brown, three brothers Joe Phillips of West Tennessee, John Phillips of Mississippi, Sam Phillips, Shelbyville; three sisters, Miss Doan Phillips and Mrs. Kate Nancy, California, and Mrs. Meek Adams of Shelbyville.
Mrs. W. J. Brown a well known citizen of the Haley community, died at her home last Wednesday. Mrs. Brown was Miss Mai Jenkins prior to her marriage
and was a member of a prominent Bedford county family. She is survived by her husband,
W. J. Brown, two children, Miss Elizabeth Brown and Maurice Brown of Haley; a brother Oscar Jenkins of San Antonia, Texas. Funeral
services were held at the Baptist Church at Haley, Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. Chas. Armstrong was in charge of
the service. Mrs. Brown was well known here and held in high esteem by a wide circle of friends.
Mrs Alex S. Caldwell, superintendent of the Tennessee Vocational School for Girls at Tullahoma, died at a Nashville hospital Sunday.
Mrs. Caldwell, who has been president of the Tennessee Federation of Women's
Clubs had been superintendent of the school seven years.
She underwent an operation at the hospital about three weeks ago, and later contracted pneumonia.
As president of the Tennessee Federation of Women's Clubs, Mrs. Caldwell interested Tennessee women in the institution at Tullahoma and a tablet in
the hospital there is dedicated to her memory.
Charles H. Davis, 72, well known conductor for the N.C. and St. L. railroad company company, died at his home in Murfreesboro last Thursday, following a long illness. Mr. Davis served as conductor on the Shelbyville branch road for a number of years and made many warm friends here during his stay, who regret to hear of his passing.
Funeral services were held at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Murfreesboro, Saturday morning. The interment was in the Mt. Olivet
Cemetery of Nashville Tennessee.
Robert W. Davis, 78, a well known and highly respected citizen of Bedford county, died at the Bedford County Hospital, Monday after a short illness.
Funeral services were held at his late residence Tuesday afternoon at three o'clock. Rev.
W. O. Largten, Rev. C. M. Pickler, of Chattanooga and Rev. Ab. Morgan, conducted the funeral services. The burial was in Willow Mount
cemetery. The death of this good man is a loss to the community. Quiet and unassuming in manner, he was held in high esteem by a wide circle of friends
and acquaintances. He was a successful farmer and a member of the Methodist church for many years. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Beulah Thompson
Davis, a brother, Major Davis of Pulaski, and several nieces and nephews. There was a large crowd present to pay their last tribute of respect to this
aged citizen.
The friends of Mrs. Bailey Evans, of Fort Worth Texas, will be sorry to learn of the death of her father, Mrs
J. J. Morford, of McMinnville, who passed away at his home, Monday at noon. Mr and Mrs Evans reached
McMinnville Monday night. The funeral services were today, Wednesday, at 4:30 o'clock, at the residence, conducted by Rev.
L. T. Lawrence, pastor of the Lane street Presbyterian church. The burial was in the Riverside
cemetery. Mr. Morford was one of McMinnville's leading citizens. He is survived by his wife, his daughter, Mrs.
B. P. Evans, a sister, Mrs. David B. Carson and a brother, Charles Moford.
Ben Parker, a well known farmer of the Flat Creek community died Friday morning at his home after a long and painful illness. Funeral services were held at the late residence Saturday morning at 10 o'clock, with Rev Ernest Bryant of Humboldt officiating.. The buraial was in the Flat Creek cemetery. The Masonic order, of which he was a member, conducted the services at the grave.
Mr. Parker was a member of a prominent family, the son of the late J. B. Parker and Mrs. Rosana Reagor Parker, pioneer citizens of the community. The passing of this good man removes from the county one of its most progressive farmers and a good citizen. He served as president of the Bedford County Farm Bureau, and was actively interested in
the county's affairs. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Grace Bobo Parker and three children, a son Leonard Parker, two daughters; Mrs. Clyde Landers and Mrs. Sam Rutledge of Shelbyville, two sisters; Mrs.
F. P. Hix, Shelbyville, a brother, Frank Parker of Winchester.
Funeral service for James Carl Reed, year old son of Mr and Mrs Carl Reed, was held at the Nazarene Church Tuesday morning with Rev. E. H. Stout, pastor, in charge of the service. The remains were taken to the New Hope Graveyard for interment.
Funeral services for Mrs. Lee Reed of Longview were held at the residence Thursday morning at ten o'clock, the Rev. Graves, pastor of the Enon church,
officiating. The burial was in the family graveyard. Mrs. Reed, who was Miss Ella Rucker prior to her marriage, was a member of a well known Bedford
county family and a woman of many excellent traits of character. She had been a member of the Primitive Baptist church for a number of years. She is
survived by her husband, three sons, Brooks, Howard and John L. Reed; a sister, Mrs. Emma Morton, of Shelbyville.
Doyle Rogers, 23, died at the Bedford County Hospital Tuesday night after an illness of typhoid fever. The remains were conveyed to Bedford Wednesday afternoon, where the funeral services were held. Rev. E. H. Stout officiated. Mr. Rogers is survived by his wife and two small children, the youngest an infant only two days old; and his father, A. B. Rogers. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereaved family.
James B. Rogers, aged 74, a highly respected citizen died at the residence of his son, Horace Rogers on the Lynchburg pike, Monday at 12:30 after a brief illness.
Funeral services were held at the New Hope church Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. E.H. Stout. Burial was in the New Hope graveyard. Mr. Rogers was a man of many fine traits of character and will be greatly missed in the community. He is survived by the following children: Mrs Fred Kimery, Mrs. Alice Haithcote, Horace and Jimmy Rogers.
Word was received here last Wednesday of the death of H.G. Rogers, former resident of this place, in Los Angeles, Calif., where he has resided for the past 32 years.
He is survived by the following brothers; E. C. Rogers of Nashville, A. F. Rogers of Portland, Oregon; Moody Rogers of Los Angeles, and a sister, Mrs. J. W. Burrow of Portland, Oregon.
Mrs. Sara Frances Rogers, wife of Will Tom Rogers, died at her home near Unionville Wednesday, Nov 8th. Mrs Rogers was seventy-four years of age and had been a member of the Methodist church for many years. The funeral was held at the Wheeler graveyard Thursday afternoon at two o'clock. Rev. Stem and Rev. Kelly officiated. She is survived by her husband, a sister and three brothers.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at 10 A.M., at the Chadwick cemetery near Beech Grove for Mrs Betty Frizzell Rushing who died Sunday at the home of her sister, Mrs. Laura Eaton, in Murfreesboro. She is survived by two brothers, John Frizzell of Deason, and Spencer Frizzell , Nashville; three sisters, Mrs. Laura Eaton, Murfreesboro, Mrs. Josie Whitaker, Bell Buckle and Mrs. Ellen Eaton, Chapel Hill.
The sudden death of Dennie P. Shapard Friday afternoon at a Nashville hospital created wide spread sorrow here. A member of a prominent family, the son of the late Henry Shapard and Mrs. Cassie Streeter Shapard, he had spent most of his life in Shelbyville where he enjoyed a wide friendship.
He had served two terms as Circuit Court Clerk of Bedford County, and under the Horton administration, he held a position under the comptroller. Dennie Shapard was a generous, kind hearted man, loyal and devoted to his family and friends, his sudden passing in the prime of life brings sorrow to a large circle. Funeral services were held at the residence Saturday at five o'clock, conducted by his pastor, Rev. J.T. Parsons. The interment was in Willow Mount cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Eliza McDonald Shapard; three daughters, Misses Clara Streeter, Anne and Katherine Shapard; four brothers, Lewis, Charlie, Frank, and Edwin Shapard, and a sister, Mrs Tom Hix.
Prominent Man of Griffin, GA., and Prominently Connected Here Dies Friday Morning
R.P. Shapard, president of the Spaulding Knitting Mills, at Griffin, Ga., was found in his office Friday morning, shot through the head and died a few hours later. Mr. Shapard was alone in his office when a number of the employees of the mill heard the shot and rushed in to find him wounded and a pistol lying on the floor beside him. He had been in ill health for some time. He was a former citizen of Shelbyville, the eldest son of Mrs Evander Shapard and the late Evander Sharpard, Sr. He was reared here and his death is source of wide regret. He had been living in Griffin Ga., for some time and had invented and patented machinery for the manufacture of children hose, and was considered one of the wealthiest men in that part of Georgia.
Mr. Shapard was a successful, useful citizen, a man of capacity and splendid public spirit. He is survived by his wife, his son Robert Jr. Two grandchildren, his mother Mrs. E. Shapard, five sisters, Mrs Eugenen Haynes of Douglas, Ga., Mrs Carl Douthitt of Santa Cruze Calif., Mrs. H.L. Dayton and Mrs. James L. Morton of this place and Mrs. Lawrence Polk of Chattanooga, and two brothers, Tom Shapard of Atlanta and Evander Shapard of Griffin.
Mrs John Stallings, well known and highly respected citizen, died Sunday, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Joe Palmer, on the Unionville pike.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock at Bedford. Rev. Claude Lewis officiating.
Mrs. Stallings was a member of the Baptist
church.
She is survived by eight children and a number of grandchildren (not named)
