Joe Ryan Tue, 23 Dec 1997 20:48:04

I’m trying to get a feeling for the topography of the area between Wartrace and Bell Buckle TN. I’ve been searching for my grandfather, Joseph Benjamin Suggs, who was supposedly living in the area during the 1860/65 war (too young to have been a soldier). Don’t find Suggs in Wartrace in the 1850/1860 Censuses, but plenty in Bell Buckle. Family legend (my 84 year old cousin) says he came from Wartrace…I’ve been told that there is, or was, a Wartrace Creek that may have been in the area. If so, could he have lived near the Creek and still have been listed in the Bell Buckle 1850 or 60 census (at least his relations as I beleive his possible father Joseph J. and his wife, Mary, show up in the 1850 census in Bell Buckle living w/Joseph J’s father, William age 82, and his mother, Suzzanah. In 1860, William’s apparently deceased and his wife, Suzzanah, a widow, is living w/her older son, Neamiah and his family in Bell Buckle also. In 1860, Joseph J and his family have dissappeared (I beleive they went back to where their youngest son, Thomas, was born, Arkansas). However, Joseph J,etc., could have returned during the war as the legend has my grandfather, Joseph B. plowing a field in WARTRACE and some Union soldiers wanting to help so they could get the feel of a plow again. I was wondering if there was a way you could ascertain if there is a lady named, Mary Alice Suggs HOLDEN residing in Christiana, TN. She, based on the above story, could be a distant relative as she’s supposed to be a decendent of Neamiah Suggs.

This story concerning Joseph Benjamin Suggs was covered in Dick Poplin’s column in the Shelbyville Times-Gazzette, the last being the column in the June 18th 1997 issue. Sincerely, Joe Ryan

Heidi E. Hafner Mon, 01 Dec 1997 20:00:35

Hello,

I am looking for information on Edward WARREN married to Rebecca DABNEY.

Edward was born in Charles Co., MD sometime around 1744. He married his first wife whose name is unknown. After his wife died, he moved to Pittsylvania Co., VA with his 5 children to be with his sister Mary (WARREN) STONE. He met and married Rebecca “Beckey” DABNEY and then moved to Chatham Co., NC by 1791. He is said to be in the 1800 and the 1810 census for that county.

They moved to Bedford Co., TN after the 1820 census. I need any information that I can find on these two. I am completely stumped with Edward and his where abouts. I am told that he had 5 children (3 girls and 2 boys) by his first wife and then 5 more with Rebecca (genders unknown). Thank you in advance for your help. SMITH, Enoch Jones B 1842 Tenn. Enlisted in Confederate Army, (Company G. 2nd Arkansas Infantry as a Private) in Wartrace Tenn. 3-13-1863. Was signed up by Captain McGeehee. Married Kizarh Crouch 1866-67 in Stone Co Arkansas. They had five children, Mary Levina, John William Wesley, Mahala A., Priscilla Josephine and Eliza. E.J. died September 1869, Stone Co Arkansas during a paralytic epsiode, probably of cardiac or respiratory arrest.

Hi, I’m seeking any information about my great-grandfather, E.J. Smith, who was born in TN but migrated to Arkansas before 1865. I have not been able to find any information on his family at all. Need info on parents and possible sibs. His mother may have been a Jones or Johns. EJ suffered from a hereditary muscle membrane disorder called Hypokalemic Periodic Paralysis. He died as a result of this disorder but not before passing it along to many descendents. This disorder is very rare – only 1 in 100,000 to 200,000 people, but it is unusually common in Tenn, NC and SC, probably because of an ancestor five or six generations back. It is possible EJ had some Native American blood. I am researching not only my Smith/Jones family history but trying to document the incidence of HypoKPP for medical research reasons. If you or anyone in your family has a history of episodic periods of weakness, unusual fatigue on days following physical activity, or after large or high carbohydrate meals, or if you’ve ever experienced an episode of partial or total flaccid (floppy) paralysis, please look at http://www.calexplorer.com/ushkpp.html. My Grandmother Helen Virginia NORVELL was born Oct. 20, 1868 in Bell Buckle, TN. I am seeking information on her father W.B. NORVELL, born Nov. 28, 1819. I am not sure where. He died May 21, 1895 in Neosho, Mo. I am not sure what the W.B. stands for. I can find nothing in the Neosho library or newspaper clippings telling about parents or relatives or where he was born. I am also seeking information on his wife, Virginia G. PEACOCK. She was born July 4, 1835, maybe in Bell Buckle. She died July 4, 1927 in Neosho, Mo. Again, I cannot find anything on her. There is a street in Bell Buckle named for the PEACOCK family and I understand they had slaves at one time. Any information on them would be greatly appreciated, as I seem to be at a deadend.

Robert D. Craig Mon, 10 Nov 1997 20:31:31

CRAIG–RAWLINGS–HOOVER. James Monroe Craig (b. ca. 1845) and Martha Lee Montgomery Craig lived in Bedford County in 1875 when their son Oscar Franklin Craig was born. They lived there until about 1882 when they moved to Union City, Tennessee. I don’t know who James’ parents or other family members were. Anyone know??? Also, on another family line, I was told that members of James Knox Polk Rawlings’ family lived “in Bell-something in Tennessee”, before the Civil War and I thought it might be Belle Buckle. This family married into the Hoover family. They may or may not be from Bedford County. Thanks for the help! —Robert D. Craig, rcraig [at] bootheel [dot] net

Frederick Edwin Becton had three children in N.C. Between 1806-7 he moved to Rutherford Co.TN There are Abstracts from newspapers in the mero district TN in May 1807 that the postmaster had mail for him since July. The 3rd child married in Murfreesboro 1827.

What I would like to know is about his 2nd wife Fannie May where , when she died and any other pertinent info you get.

You see I have a will of F.E. in Cherokee Co. TX There is no mention of a wife. I think he M again but he did say that he was frail in body but sound in mind. Hell marrying three times is enough to make a man frail. Bye and thanks for what U can do. Regards, Winn

Sue Bates Thu, 6 Nov 1997 23:31:06

Hi there! I have no idea as to whether or not anyone can help me here, but I’ll give it a shot. I am trying to locate information on my grandmother. She was born Amanda Bell Cates around the Shelbyville area, probably in the mid 1880’s. She later changed her name to Minnie Bell Cates. There was a brother Jim (James?) and I seem to recall that her father had been a preacher. If you are familiar with the story of the real Jack Daniels and why he never married, my grandma was the girl that he’d fallen in love with. Her mother broke a guitar over his head when he pursued them to the train station when they were leaving to go north. The story goes that they had met when both were showing horses. Just a little trivia. Anyway, wish I could furnish more information, but having been a little kid at the time, I just wasn’t paying attention! Anything anyone has that might be able to help me with this would be wonderful. Thank you in advance for your time and trouble. Sincerely, Sue Bates, bsbates [at] netease [dot] net

Saw your listing on the Tennessee Gen Web for Bedford County. I am trying to locate an ancestor of mine, David Parker Glenn. His son, Robert Lee Glenn, was born in Bedford County in 1872. Family tradition has it that David’s wife was Lucinda Elizabeth Hill, although that is not 100% certain. I cannot afford to hire any research done, but does anyone have information on the David Glenn family who would be willing to share it for free? I do not know if this David Glenn was the same one listed in the White County Census of 1850 and 1860.Thanks for your cooperation.

His daughter Sallie Clay married my ggrandfather Dr. James Searcy. I have quite alot of information on both families which I would share and am very interested in finding descendents of John Lambert Neill. They lived on Hwy 82 between Bellbuckle and Beech Grove; I have found the site of the family cemetary.

My grandfather Granville Deaderick Searcy and Mary Alleen Chilcoat were married in Bellbuckle in 1885 and left that area about five years later.

I am looking for additional information about my g.g. grandparents, Eliza Tennessee TIMMONS (Mar 20, 1842-Jan. 12, 1905) who married John BLACKBURN (May 13, 1827-July 31, 1911). the 1880 census shows them in Bedford County. I believe they moved to Bedford Co. from Coffee Co. One of their daughters, Lula BLACKBURN (ca. 1862-1891) married Thomas Jefferson MCGRIFF from Coffee Co. John BLACKBURN first married Eliza’s older sister, Nancy Ann TIMMONS, and had two sons, William and Ambrose. Are there any records showing if they were buried in Bedford Co.? Why did they move from Coffee Co. to Bedford? Any information about this family would be appreciated.

Am searching for information on my ggrandparents, JOHN WESLEY FURGERSON (Ferguson, Fergason, etc.) AND MAHULDIA (BRUCE) FURGERSON. Census records indicate they were born in Tennessee. Their first child was born in Tennessee in 1840; it can be assumed they were married sometime around 1838. A fifth child was born in 1851 in Tennessee, and their sixth child was born in 1854 in Hopkins County, Ky. Therefore, they left Tennessee sometime between 1851 and 1854. In the 1830 and 1840 census of Bedford County there are Furgersons and bruces living in near proximity. I am wondering whether any of these families were a part of our John and Mahuldia.
