{"id":5411,"date":"2020-02-05T12:01:14","date_gmt":"2020-02-05T17:01:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/andersoncounty\/?p=5411"},"modified":"2024-07-27T11:36:54","modified_gmt":"2024-07-27T15:36:54","slug":"lake-city-air-force-station","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/andersoncounty\/2020\/02\/lake-city-air-force-station\/","title":{"rendered":"Lake City Air Force Station"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>Originally designed as\u00a0<b>Cross Mountain Air Force Station<\/b>, Lake City AFS was one of twenty-eight stations built as part of the second segment of the permanent\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Air Defense Command\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Air_Defense_Command\">Air Defense Command<\/a>\u00a0network. Prompted by the start of the\u00a0<a title=\"Korean War\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Korean_War\">Korean War<\/a>, on 11 July 1950, the Secretary of the Air Force asked the Secretary of Defense for approval to expedite construction of the second segment of the permanent network. Receiving the Defense Secretary&#8217;s approval on 21 July, the Air Force directed the Corps of Engineers to proceed with construction.<\/p>\r\n<p>The\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"663d Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/663d_Aircraft_Control_and_Warning_Squadron\">663d Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron<\/a>\u00a0began operations at a temporary &#8220;Lashup&#8221; site L-47 located at\u00a0<a title=\"McGhee Tyson Airport\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/McGhee_Tyson_Airport\">McGhee Tyson Airport<\/a>, near Knoxville, TN on 1 January 1951. It later moved to a\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Tennessee National Guard\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tennessee_National_Guard\">Tennessee National Guard<\/a>\u00a0Armory in nearby\u00a0<a title=\"Maryville, Tennessee\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maryville,_Tennessee\">Maryville, Tennessee<\/a>\u00a0in November 1951.<\/p>\r\n<p>With construction at Cross Mountain AFS finishing in March 1952, the 663d AC&amp;W Squadron began operating a pair of\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"AN\/CPS-6\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/AN\/CPS-6\">AN\/CPS-6<\/a>B and\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"AN\/FPS-10\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/AN\/FPS-10\">AN\/FPS-10<\/a>\u00a0radars from the permanent site, allowing for the deactivation of L-47 at Maryville. The station functioned as a Ground-Control Intercept (GCI) and warning station. As a GCI station, the squadron&#8217;s role was to guide interceptor aircraft toward unidentified intruders picked up on the unit&#8217;s radar scopes. The station was re-designated as Lake City AFS, TN, on 1 December 1953. An\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"AN\/FPS-6\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/AN\/FPS-6\">AN\/FPS-6<\/a>\u00a0height-finder radar was added in 1958.
