{"id":3364,"date":"2012-02-26T14:06:23","date_gmt":"2012-02-26T09:06:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tngenweb.org\/anderson\/?p=3364"},"modified":"2017-06-09T16:28:30","modified_gmt":"2017-06-09T21:28:30","slug":"confederate-veterans-pension-application-index-for-anderson-county","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/andersoncounty\/2012\/02\/confederate-veterans-pension-application-index-for-anderson-county\/","title":{"rendered":"Confederate Veterans&#8217; Pension Application Index for Anderson County"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>From the Tennessee State Library and Archives web site:<\/strong>\u00a0 In 1891 Tennessee established the Board of Pension Examiners to determine if Confederate veterans applying for pensions were eligible.\u00a0 Eligibility requirements included an inability to support oneself, honorable separation from the service and residence in the state for one year prior to application.<\/p>\n<p>Confederate veterans applied to the pension board of the state <strong>in which they resided at the time of application<\/strong>, even if this was not the state from which they served.<\/p>\n<p>The application lists the veteran\u2019s place of enlistment, unit, period of service, battles participated in and whether he was captured or wounded, as well as place of birth, number and gender of children and value of real and personal property.<\/p>\n<p>Widow\u2019s pensions were first issued in 1905.\u00a0 These applications show place of birth for widow and soldier, and information about their children.\u00a0 Proof of marriage was required, so marriage licenses often appear in the supporting documentation.\u00a0 Other documentation includes correspondence between the applicant and the Pension Board, letters or sworn affadavits attesting to character and military service, and abstracts of the soldier\u2019s service record furnished by the War Department.<\/p>\n<p>The Board maintained three separate rolls:\u00a0 Soldiers\u2019 roll, Widows\u2019 roll and Colored soldiers\u2019 roll.\u00a0 The following is a list of the veterans and widows who applied from Anderson County.\u00a0 All units are regiments unless otherwise designated.\u00a0 If a unit was known by more than one name or number, the official designation for that unit is used.<\/p>\n<p>Soldiers\u2019 pension = S\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Widows\u2019 pension = W\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Colored soldiers\u2019 roll = C<\/p>\n<p><strong>NOTE:\u00a0 This index does not include all Confederate veterans from Anderson County.\u00a0 It contains the names of only those who were living in and applied for a pension from Anderson County at the time Confederate pensions were allowed.\u00a0 Copies of these pension application files may be obtained from the Tennessee State Library and Archives in Nashville.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Andrew D.
