{"id":1384,"date":"2011-09-12T02:41:50","date_gmt":"2011-09-11T21:41:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tngenweb.org\/anderson\/?p=1384"},"modified":"2017-06-09T16:31:47","modified_gmt":"2017-06-09T21:31:47","slug":"death-of-granville-bunch-1922","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/andersoncounty\/2011\/09\/death-of-granville-bunch-1922\/","title":{"rendered":"Obituary &#8211; Bunch, Granville, 1922"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Death of Granville Bunch, 1922:<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Death Penalty<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Granville Bunch, Wife Slayer, Executed in State Prison<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>His Crime was Brutal and Deserved Severest Punishment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Granville Bunch died in the electric chair at Nashville Tuesday morning at 7 o\u2019clock for the murder of his wife.\u00a0 He protested to the last that he could not remember the shooting.\u00a0 Spiritual advisors were with him all night, but he was little interested in their prayers or scripture reading.\u00a0 On Monday afternoon he declared he did not believe in God or the truth of the Bible, and he died without changing this opinion.\u00a0 He said a bad woman was the real cause of his death.\u00a0 He ate a full meal sent him, but did not seem to care whether he had any visitors.\u00a0 No relatives visited him, nor was his body claimed and it will be disposed of by prison officials.\u00a0 It was the opinion of the officials and visitors that his claim of lapse of memory was a fraud.<\/p>\n<p>The opinion of the Supreme Court in denying a new trial is given below:<\/p>\n<p>Granville Bunch, of Anderson county, a white man, about 36 years of age, was sentenced to death by electrocution for the murder of his wife, Mrs. Barzilla Bunch.\u00a0 The proof on which Bunch was convicted of this crime showed that his wife had become estranged from him and had refused to live with him, returning to the home of her father, Joe Dougherty.\u00a0 Sometime before the homicide, Bunch came to the home of his father-in-law and when his wife refused to return to him, demanded that she return certain articles of jewelry and clothing which he had given her, even required her to remove the clothing which she was wearing and deliver it to him.\u00a0 The woman complied with this demand, borrowing clothing from her mother to take the place of that which she surrendered.\u00a0 The defendant then piled her clothing in the yard and burned it.\u00a0 At the time of the homicide Bunch had returned to Dougherty\u2019s home to induce his wife to come back to him.\u00a0 When she persisted in her refusal, he followed her down the road and after a short interview, killed her by shooting her in the back with a pistol.\u00a0 The court found that all of the elements of murder in the first degree existed in this case and affirmed the sentence of death.<\/p>\n<p><em>Anderson County News<\/em>, April 15, 1922<\/p>\n<p>[Transcribed from a photocopy of the microfilm in the genealogy vertical files at Lake City Library.]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Death of Granville Bunch, 1922: Death Penalty Granville Bunch, Wife Slayer, Executed in State Prison His Crime was Brutal and Deserved Severest Punishment Granville Bunch died in the electric chair <a class=\"more-link\" href=\"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/andersoncounty\/2011\/09\/death-of-granville-bunch-1922\/\">Continue Reading \u2192<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[27],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1384","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-obituaries-a-d"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/andersoncounty\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1384","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/andersoncounty\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/andersoncounty\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/andersoncounty\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/andersoncounty\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=1384"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/andersoncounty\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1384\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":5068,"href":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/andersoncounty\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1384\/revisions\/5068"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/andersoncounty\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1384"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/andersoncounty\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=1384"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/tngenweb.org\/andersoncounty\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=1384"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
