Retired Y-12 iron rigger
Joe Mitchell, 79, of 327 Laurel Road, Clinton, died Thursday, Dec. 14, 1995, at Oak Ridge Health Care Center.
Mr. Mitchell was retired after 30 years with Union Carbide Nuclear Division where he worked as an iron rigger at the Y-12 Plant. He was also the owner of Laurel Road Perennial Gardens.
Born Jan. 25, 1916, in Anderson County, he was the son of Sam and Florida Ridney Mitchell. He was a member of Black Oak Baptist Church in Clinton and Clinton Masonic Lodge, 376, F & AM, York Rite and Scottish Rite.
Mr. Mitchell is survived by a daughter, Hazel Wallace of Clinton; two sons, Joe Leon Mitchell and his wife, Pat, of Clinton, and Sam B. Mitchell and his wife, Lynda, of Knoxville; two brothers, Hence Mitchell of Oliver Springs and Sam Mitchell of Akron, Ohio.
He is survived by several grandchildren, Michael J. Mitchell, Shery Kay Waldo, Mary Lea Wilder, Rick Wallace, Mark Wallace, Joe Wallace, Angela Mitchell, Marcus Mitchell, and Zakhary Mitchell; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
His wife Inez Huckaby Mitchell, and two sisters and a brother, Lillie Disney, Mary Bell Mitchell and David Mitchell, died earlier.
Graveside services were held Sunday, Dec. 17 at Black Oak Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. H. Mack Smith officiating. Grandsons served as pallbearers.
Masonic services were held Saturday in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton.
