Former Oliver Springs council member
Hence Mitchell Sr., 85, of Oliver Springs, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Born Feb. 14, 1918, in Anderson County, he was the son of Sam Mitchell Sr. and Florida Rigney Mitchell. He was a lifelong resident of the area.
Mr. Mitchell retired from Union Carbide at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant as a material handler after working 30 years. He was a member of Black Oak Baptist Church. He also served the city of Oliver Springs as a council member from 1983 to 1985.
According to his family, his hobbies were gardening and politics.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Hence Mitchell Jr. and Ellis Douglas Mitchell; two brothers, Dave Mitchell and Joe Mitchell; and by two sisters, Lillie Disney and Marybelle Mitchell.
Mr. Mitchell is survived by his wife of 61 years, Louella Goodman Mitchell; three daughters, Barbara Tucker and husband, Archer, Brenda Jones and husband, Steve, and Debbie Green, all of Oliver Springs; and by three sons, Steve Mitchell and wife, Liz, of Kingston, Dennis Mitchell and wife, Robin, of Arlington, Texas, and Gary Mitchell of Ten Mile.
He is also survived by 15 grandchildren, Leslie Kendrick, Liesha Richardson and Paige Moore, all of Dayton, Ohio, Steven Mitchell and Chad Mitchell, both of Kingston, Melissa Collins, Steve Jones Jr., Nicholas Green and Shawn Green, all of Oliver Springs, Amanda Thompson, Rodney Mitchell and Joshua Mitchell, all of Texas, and Natachia Mitchell, Weston Mitchell and Loren Mitchell, all of Clinton; 21 great-grandchildren; a brother, Sam Mitchell Jr., of Akron, Ohio; and by several nieces, nephews, extended family members and specials friends, Mary Greer, Becky Morgan and Mack Green, all of Oliver Springs.
The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Garvan Walls and the Rev. Ron French officiating. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, at East Fork Cemetery off the Oak Ridge Turnpike in Roane County. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
