Bill of sale of slave, 1857 – Henry Chiles and Nancy Chiles to Hugh Garner:
We have this day sold and do hereby convey to Hugh Garner his heirs and assigns forever for the sum of sixty five dollars to us in hand paid a woman slave named Fanny aged about forty five years and warrant the title of said slave to the said Hugh Garner and his heirs and assigns against the lawful claims of all persons and a slave for life this 17th day of February 1857. State of Tennessee Anderson County} Personally appeared before me R. H. Coward Clerk of the County Court for said county and state A. W. Hendrix and Michael Henderson subscribing witnesses to the within Bill of Sale first being sworn depose and say that they are personally acquainted with Henry & Nancy Chiles the within named bargainer and that they acknowledged the execution of the within Bill of Sale in their presents for the purposes therein contained on the day it bears date. Given under my hand at office in Clinton this 11th day of April 1857. R. H. Coward Clk.
