Obituary of Mallie Joseph Akers, 1992:
Mallie Joseph Akers, 101, died Friday at Regency Health Care Center in Norris. He was the father of Ethel Fuis of Norris.
Mr. Akers retired at age 67. He was a rigger at the Union Carbide Y-12 Plant in Oak Ridge. He later retired from his job as a custodian at Kern United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge, where he also was a member.
His parents were the late Martin Luther and Lydia Akers. Mr. Akers was born Aug. 15, 1891, in Heyter’s Gap, VA. He married Helen Castle, by whom he is survived, near Cleveland, Ohio, in Dec. of 1919.
An infant son, two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.
A veteran of World War I, Mr. Akers served with the Army in France.
In earlier years, he had worked in construction and had kept his membership in a local ironworkers union. Before his health failed, he enjoyed gardening and tending the lawn, flowers and shrubs at his Oak Ridge home.
In addition to his wife and the Norris daughter, survivors include a son-in-law, Frank Fuis Jr. of Norris; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
Services were held Monday in the chapel of Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home with the Rev. John Trundle and the Rev. E.C. Vestal officiating. Burial was at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
