Obituary of Bessie Mae Adkins, 1992:
Bessie Mae Adkins, 92, died Sunday at West Bay Nursing Home in Tampa, Fla. She was a former Andersonville resident.
Mrs. Adkins was born in Union County May 16, 1900. Her parents were the late John and Malisa Vandergriff Tindell.
She also was preceded in death by her husband, Hovah R. Adkins, in Feb. 1964, and a son, Clarence Edward Adkins, in July 1987.
A homemaker, she was well-known for her cooking skills.
Mrs. Adkins was a member of Red Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Claude and Elaine Adkins of Athens; and Darrell and Elizabeth Adkins of Orlando, Fla; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews, including a special niece she reared as a daughter, Edna Scruggs of Clinton.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Red Hill Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Charles Gray officiating. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home.
