Following degrees were conferred upon him: B.S., Vanderbilt, 1896; M.A., Vanderbilt, 1898; Docteur-es-Lettres /sic/ and Laureate, University of Grenoble, 1904; began teaching in 1896; graduate student Modern Languages, Vanderbilt University, 1896; Professor of Modern Languages, Morrisville College (Missouri), 1897-98; graduate student Modern Languages, University of Chicago, 1898-99-1900-01; Professor Modern Languages, Polytechnic College, Texas, 1899-1900; Professor Modern Languages, Millsaps College (Mississippi), 1900-04; elected Associate Professor Romance Languages, Vandervilt /sic/ University, 1904; Instructor Summer School, University of Tennessee, 1908; Instructor Summer School, Peabody College for Teachers, 1909; married Ethel Barksdale SMITH, daughter of Robert C.
