REED, Edward A.

REED, Edward A., business man; born Rootstown, Ohio, Aug. 17, 1835; son of Horace and Esther Lois (Baldwin) REED; father’s occupation farmer; educated at Rootstown, Ohio; began his career as a farmer, and later entered business in Akron, O., until he moved to Tenn., in 1865, and settled at Coal Creek, and was one of the first to develop coal there, operated there until Jan. 1870, when he moved to Oliver Springs, Tenn., and began to buy land, later laid off that town; helped to get the railroad there and has spent thousands of dollars in developing for coal, salt, oil, gas, etc.; organized the Cumberland-Tennessee Land Co., and is general manager of same; he built a $30,000.00 hotel there, which later burned; he is at present drilling for oil; built a concrete postoffice building at Oliver Springs, Tenn., in 1910; served as Postmaster until fall of 1887, and is at present assistant postmaster at Oliver Springs, Tenn.; has been notary public for past 24 years; was on committee that built courthouse of Anderson Co., Tenn., and chairman of Finance Committee for said County for six years; married Mary Ann RODGERS, daughter of Capt. B. R. RODGERS, Nantucket, Mass., Oct. 23, 1857; Republican.
