METCALF, Charles W., Sr., lawyer, born Jessamine Co., Ky., 1840; educated in the common schools of his native county and took a course at Millersburg (Ky.) College; after leaving college in 1861 he went to Memphis, where he enlisted in Capt. Phil D. THOMPSON’S cavalry company, which was placed in Breckenridge’s brigade; he served with his company until after the battle of Shiloh, being honorably discharged for physical disability near Tupelo, Miss.; at close of war he settled in Memphis, studied law with Kortrecht & Craft, and was admitted to bar in 1866, since which time he has practiced his profession in that city; in 1874 he formed a partnership with S.P. WALKER, and it continued for nearly twenty-five years; the firm was for many years legal counsel for the city of Memphis; after the death of Judge WALKER, Mr. METCALF had his sons, Charles W. and William P. METCALF, as partners, the firm being Metcalf & Metcalf; he is a member of Knights Templar, Masons, and took an active part in the building of the Masonic Temple in Memphis; member of First Presbyterian Church, Memphis, Tenn.; Democrat.
