KERN, John Adam, Professor Vanderbilt University; born Frederick County, Va., April 23, 1846; German-English descent; son of Nimrod and Eliza (Bentley) KERN; father, farmer and ice dealer; paternal grandparents Adam and Margaret (Rittenour) KERN, maternal grandparents George and Catherine (Hoover) BENTLEY; educated Winchester High School, Winchester Seminary and University of Virginia; received from Washington and Lee University 1889, D.D. degree, and from Randolph-Macon College, 1906, the degree of LL.D.; married Margaret Virginia ESKRIDGE, January 25, 1875; admitted into Baltimore Conference, M. Episcopal Church, South, 1866; elected Professor of Philosophy, Randolph-Macon College, 1886, and President of the college in 1897; held chair of Practical Theology in Vanderbilt University since 1899; author of “The Ministry to the Congregation,” “The Way of the Preacher,” “The Listening Heart,” “The Idea of the Church” and “Christianity as Organized.”
