Washington County Civil War Veterans, 4th TN Cavalry

Company B, 4th Tennessee Cavalry

I have a website for this regiment at http://users.rootsweb.com/~tn4cav/index.html and there were several men from Washington County who enlisted in Company B of the regiment. I would like to share the information I have transcribed about them, and hopefully some of you will have some additional information to add.

(These men were born in Washington Co., had an occupation of farmer, and had the rank of Private, unless otherwise noted).

BACON, Jeremiah Age 26, ht: 5′ 8″; complexion: fair; eyes: blue; hair: light. Enlisted June 2, 1863 at Nashville. Died August 2, 1863 of disease (typhoid or malaria), before being mustered in.

BROWN, Deadrick S. Age 27, ht: 6′; complexion: dark; eyes: black; hair: black. Enlisted Nov. 6, 1862 at Harlin Co., KY. In the 1890 Veteran’s schedule census, was living at Conklin in Washington Co., with disability “disease of eyes”.

CLARK, Isaac. Age 26, ht: 6′ 2″; compl: fair; eyes: black; hair: fair. Enlisted Nov. 15, 1861 at Greene Co., TN. In 1890 was living at Blair’s Gap, Sullivan Co., with disability “exposure”.

CLARK, Robert. Age 23, ht: 5′ 4″; compl: red; eyes: blue; hair: dark. Enlisted Sept 11, 1862 at Sullivan Co. In 1890 was living at Blair’s Gap, Sullivan Co., with disability “diarrhea & piles”.

CONKIN, Hagans. Age 46, ht: 6′; compl: dark; eyes: black; hair: black. Enlisted Nov 15, 1861 at Greene Co. Captured Dec.4, 1861 at Greeneville, and then released the same day. Died Feb. 9, 1865 at Gallatin, TN from erysipelas.

DOTSON, James R. Age 21, ht: 5′ 10″; compl: dark; eyes: grey; hair: dark. Enlisted Nov 12, 1862 at Richmond, KY. Promoted to Corporal Dec. 22, 1862, & to Sgt Jan 1, 1865.

DUNCAN, John M. Age 21, ht: 5′ 10″; comp: fair; eyes: blue; hair: dark. Enlisted Feb. 5, 1863 at Barren Co., KY. Promoted to Corporal March 1, 1864.

HAWS, John S. Age 25, ht: 5′ 5″; compl: fair; eyes: blue; hair: black. Enlisted Dec. 10, 1862 at Barren Co., KY. Died Jan 27, 1863 at hospital in Louisville. In 1890 his former widow, Nancy E. Beals, was living in Jonesboro.

MAHONEY, William. Age 28, ht: 5′ 10″; compl: dark; eyes: black; hair: dark. Enlisted Nov. 5, 1862 at McKee Co., KY. Deserted Jan 26, 1864. In 1890 is living at Chuckey City, Greene Co., with disabilities of heart and lungs.

McADAMS, David B. Age 22, ht: 5′ 10″; compl: dark; eyes: blue; hair: dark. Enlisted Nov 5, 1862 at McKee Co., KY.

McADAMS, John C. Age 26, ht: 5′ 8″; compl: dark; eyes: black; hair: dark. Enlisted Nov 5, 1862 at McKee Co., KY

McADAMS, Matthew J. Age 27, ht: 5′ 6″; compl: dark; eyes: black; hair: dark. Enlisted Nov 5, 1862 at McKee Co., KY. Died June 19, 1863 at Nashville of typhoid fever.

MILBURN, Samuel H. Age 21, ht: 5′ 8″; compl: fair; eyes: blue; hair: fair. Enlisted Nov 6, 1862 at Carter Co., KY. Deserted May 23, 1864 at Camp Catlett, near Nashville.

MORRIS, Daniel. Age 20, occupation: shoemaker; ht: 5′ 2″; compl: dark; eyes: black; hair: dark. Enlisted Aug. 30, 1862 at Sullivan Co.

PRESNELL, Gabriel. Age 22, ht: 5′ 6″; compl: dark; eyes: blue; hair: light. Enlisted Sept 8, 1862 at Greene Co.

PRESNELL, Isaac. Age 25, occupation: shoemaker; ht: 5′ 10″; compl: fair; eyes: blue; hair: black. Enlisted Sept 8, 1862 at Sullivan Co.

ROGERS, Henry N. Age 26, ht: 6′; compl: dark; eyes: grey; hair: dark. Enlisted Feb. 9, 1863 at Nashville. Killed Feb 11, 1864 on picket near Coldwater, Miss. In 1890 his widow Elizabeth Mary Shields was living at May Day.

SHIPLEY, Adam. Age 23, ht: 5′ 8″; compl: red; eyes: blue; hair: sandy. Enlisted Nov 15, 1862 at Lexington, KY. Promoted to Com. Sgt Dec. 22, 1862. In 1890 was living at Locust Mount with disability inguinal hernia.

SHIPLEY, Elijah E. Age 19, ht: 5′ 8″; compl: red; eyes: black; hair: black. Enlisted Nov. 20, 1862 at Lexington, KY. Promoted to Corporal June 30, 1863. POW – captured Feb. 22, 1864 near Okalona, Miss. Held at Goldsboro, NC. Paroled March 4, 1865. In 1890 was living at Locust Mount with multiple disabilties.

WHITAKER, William A. Age 21; ht: 5′ 8″; compl: fair; eyes: blue; hair: light. Enlisted Nov 20, 1862 at Lexington, KY. Died Dec. 24, 1863 at Murfreesboro, TN of smallpox.

WHITLOCK, William A. Age 21, ht: 6′ 1″; compl: fair; eyes: blue; hair: dark. Enlisted Sept 8, 1862 at Sullivan Co. Died Aug 9, 1863 at Nashville of typhoid.

 WILLIAMS, Thomas. Age 17, ht: 5′ 5″; compl: dark; eyes: grey; hair: dark. Enlisted Sept 8, 1862 at Sullivan Co. Promoted to Corporal Dec. 22, 1862, reduced to ranks June 30, 1863, restored March 1, 1865. In 1890 was living at Riverdale in Knox Co, with disability of ruptured bowels.

 WOODRUFF, Landon. Age 20, ht: 5′ 10″; compl: fair; eyes: blue; hair: light. Enlisted Dec. 1, 1862 at Greene Co. Deserted Louisville Jan 27, 1863, returned March 12, 1863, restored to duty. Died April 9, 1864 of smallpox at Nashville.

WORKMAN, Benjamin. Age 19, ht: 5′ 6″; compl: dark; eyes: black; hair: black. Enlisted June 18, 1863 at Greene Co. Died Aug 8, 1863 at Nashville of typhoid.
