The following discharges and “Oaths of Identity” are located in the Washington County Deeds office, Deed book 40. There are a total of eighty-seven such entries. The first entry for Thomas Huddleston is transcribed exactly as written as an example, as the format is almost identical for all other entries. One exception is for soldiers who were discharged by a “Surgeon’s Certificate of Disability.” For the sake of space, the registration information at the bottom of each page, which contains no personal information, has been omitted. The remaining entries will be abstracts only and spelling mistakes have been corrected, except for proper names.

Know ye, that Thomas L. B. Huddleston, a First Lieut. of Captain Charles W. Cross & Company (F.) 7th Regiment of Tenn. Mtd. Infantry, Volunteers, who was enroled [sic] on the first day of January one thousand eight hundred and Sixty Five to serve one year or during war, is hereby Discharged from the service of the United States, this 27 day of July 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee in accordance with S. O. No.18 Hd Ins. Mil. Div Tenn.
(No objection to his re-enlisting is Known to exist.)  Dated Nashville July 11 1865.  Said Thomas L. B. Huddleston was born in Fentress County, in the State of Tennessee, is twenty one years of age, is five feet eleven inches high  Fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair and by accupation [sic], when enrolled, a farmer.

Huddleston, of the Town of Jonesboro, County of Washington in the State of Tennessee, on this 19th day of Septr in the year one thousand eight hundred and sixty five, personally appeared before me, the undersigned, a Justice of the Peace for the county and State above mentioned, Thomas L. B. Huddleston, who being duly sworn according to law, declairs [sic] that he is the identical, Thomas L. B. Huddleston who was a first Lieutenant in the Company Commanded by Capt. Charles W. Cross, in the Regiment 7th Tenn. Mt Inft, commanded by Col, Jas. T. Special Orders, War Department.  First Lieutenant, George W. Luttrell, Thirteenth Tennessee Cavalry having tendered his resignation, for pressing private reasons, is hereby honorably discharged the service of the United States with condition that he shall receive no final payment until he has satisfied the Pay Department that he is not indebted to the Government.  He was a First Lieutenant of Company (M), commanded by Capt. James B. Wyatt, dec’d in the Thirteenth Regiment of Tennessee Cavalry Volunteers, commanded by Col John K. Miller. He enlisted in the First Tennessee Cavalry on 21 Sep 1862 and was promoted to First Lieutenant in the Thirteenth Tennessee Cavalry on 2 Feb 1864. He was discharged on 11 Jan 1865 by the War Department in Washington. Currently a resident of the town of Jonesboro, Washington County, TN.
