Located at the end of a lane off People’s Street between I-26 and People’s Street, beside AAA, Johnson City, Tennessee.The cemetery can been seen from I-26. It is well kept. There are nine fieldstones.

Nathan Peoples 1774-1857 and his wife, Lavinia Patton Peoples, 1807-1839 are buried here. Their graves marked with fieldstone.

Buried in unmarked graves are a Peters woman and several children of Proffit, Peters, and Smithpeters families.

Nathan Peoples February 16, 1857

Youngest son Pleasant J.C. Peoples – my 160 acre farm for $1500 and he is to care for me. Ruth is to stay with one of the children – she chose Jonah S. Keplinger – he is to have her for 1 cent and not let her be bought or sold. Ruth shall have all little articles she has bought and paid for herself. Oldest son James H. Peoples to have 2 years learning before he is of age. Third son Nathan A. Peoples, second son Azariah Peoples – the Parker Farm. Second daughters, Basmith & Joannah – the cupboard and Racel – my large chest. Heirs to wit: James H., Azariah, Nathan A., D.W.F., & Joseph M.P. Peoples, Rachel T. Rowe, Bethmont Bayles, Joannah L. Keplinger. Pleasant and Pinckney to pay me 1/3 of all grain – busheled out. Executors: D.W.F. Peoples. Attest: Jacob Fine, Elisha Fine. Probated May Term 1857. Signed: Nathan Peoples.

Family information by Effie Grace Brown Miers:

Nathan Peoples, son of Rockbridge John and Hannah Peoples. He was born 1774 in Botetourt Co. VA and moved with parents and siblings to Washington District, NC (later Carter Co. TN) in the 1780’s. He died 28 Apr 1857 in Washington Co, TN. Buried in Peoples Cemetery, Washington Co, TN He married Lavinia Patton on 17 Jun 1807 in Carter Co, TN. Lavinia was born in 1785 in Washington Co, NC and died 29 Jul 1836 Washington Co. TN. Buried in the Peoples Cemetery.

Azariah Peoples was born 1 Feb 1813 in Carter Co, TN and died 19 Apr 1892 Washington Co, TN. Buried in Peoples Cemetery. He married Eliza Ann Melvin on 16 Jan 1840 in Washington Co, TN. Eliza Ann Melvin was born 18 Sep 1823 and died 30 May 1867 in Washington Co, TN

Eliza Alice Peoples was born 6 Dec 1857 and died 4 May 1841 in Washington Co. TN. She married Edmond McInturff Brown 8 Mar 1883 in Washington Co. TN Edmond McInturff Brown was born on 21 Feb 1858 in Unicoi, TN. He died 10 Jan 1850 in Johnson City, TN. They are buried in the Peoples Cemetery. They built the first house on Browns Mill Rd. Johnson City, TN

Alfred Jesse Brown born 31 Jan1884 and died 25 Feb 1947 in Washington Co. TN He married 1) 1 Jun 1911 to Effie Careathers born 1886 and died in childbirth 4 Sep1914. Effie was the daughter of John M. and Elizabeth Northington Careathers. A.J. Brown married 2) 15 Dec Grace Crow born 15 Dec 1888 died 25 Nov 1974. Grace was the daughter of James C. & Theodosia Emily Earnest Lacy Crow.
