Mary Agnes Baker

  • Daughter of John Stanley Baker and Martha Meanor Palmer Baker
  • Born 7 Aug 1860, Marion Center, Indiana County Pennsylvania
  • Married Isaac Anderson Smoot, 26 Oct 1877, Warren County, Tennessee
  • Died 30 Aug 1938, Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri

Mary’s father, John Stanley Baker, had been a Union infantry soldier for five months at the end of the Civil War. He became chronically ill with dysentery. After 1870, John and his family moved to Warren County Tennessee. John's wife Martha taught school in Warren County. In Warren County, Mary Agnes Baker met and married Isaac Anderson Smoot. Before 1880, John Baker, Isaac Anderson Smoot and the two families moved to Kansas.
Isaac Anderson Smoot abandoned his wife Mary and their two children in Kansas and he then returned to his original home in Warren County Tennessee, telling his Tennessee family that his wife and children died in Kansas. Later he married Francis Barton in Coffee County Tennessee. About 1899, he moved to Dallas Texas. According to family tradition, Isaac died there in 1918 during the great and tragic Influenza epidemic. No divorce record for Isaac and Mary has yet been found.
