ALLEN, James Elbert  (1923-2001)

          James Elbert Allen, 78, of Warren County, passed away Sunday, August 26, 2001.  Allen was born June 7, 1923, in Warren County, the son of William Richard Allen and Hazel Roberts Allen. He was a minister for the Church of  God of Prophecy.  Services were Wednesday, August 29, 2001, in the Love-Cantrell & Cope Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in Mt. View Cemetery. Vernon Caruthers officiated.  Survivors include his wife, Geraldine Allen of McMinnville; step-daughter, Shirley Pessl of MI; step-son, Johnny Self of MI; special cousin, Delene Penny of AL; two aunts, Molly Norris of Campaign; Maggie Bennett of Campaign; many friends and relatives. Love-Cantrell & Cope Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

ALLEN, Willie  (circa 1912-1988)

Willie Allen
           Retired factory worker Willie Allen, 76, died unexpectedly at 8 a.m. Sunday at his Mountain Route, Spencer residence.  A member of the Church of CHrist and native of Van Buren County, he was married to the former Maggie Louise McDaniel and was a son of the late George and Zonar Allen.  Besides his widow, he is survived by son J.L. Allen, daughter Ella Mae Allen, sister Martha Christian, brother Lawson Allen and two grandchildren, all of Spencer.  The body is in state at High Funeral Home.  Olan Mooneyham will conduct services in High's Chapel at 2 p.m. Tuesday.  Intombment will be in Shockley Cemetery.

AUSTIN, Mattie Miller  (circa 1921 - 1999)

Mattie M. Austin, 78
            McMinnville resident and Van Buren County native Mattie M. Austin, 78, died April 25 at Glen Oakes Nursing Home in Shelbyville.  A hair stylist and a member of the Church of Christ, she was the daughter of the late Lee and Atlia Sparkman Miller; and was preceded in death by one daughter, Margie Ann Austin in 1976; and her husband, Edward J. Austin in 1962.  She is survived by one son, James E. Austin of McMinnville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda J. and Richard Bost of McMinnville and Linda and Maurice Young of Athens; sister-in-law, Geneva Ferrell of McMinnville; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.  Graveside services were held Tuesday at Mt. View Cemetery with Richard Bost officiating.  Love-Cantrell & Cope Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

AUSTIN, Thulia Shockley Grissom  (1861-1953)

Rites Tuesday For Mrs. Bob Austin, Aged Resident
     Mrs. Thulia Shockley Austin, pioneer resident of Van Buren county, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. H. Clay Brier, on Ben Lomand Drive in Westwood, Sunday afternoon at 4:30 o’clock. Mrs. Austin was 91 years, 7 months old.  She had been ill for about two months.  A native of Van Buren County, Mrs. Austin was born November 29, 1861.  She was a daughter of Phillip Shockley and Bettie Rhodes Shockley and she was married to Elijah Grissom, who died in 1911.  In 1917 she was married to Robert Austin who preceded her in death several years ago.  Mrs. Austin was a member of the Baptist Church and remained active despite her years until only a short while ago.  An occasion of note occurred on her 90th birthday when she was a customer at a McMinnville beauty parlor.  She was widely known in Warren, Van Buren and White counties where she held acquaintances with some of the counties old-time residents.  Survivors, in addition to Mrs. Brier, include another daughter.  Mrs. Laura Ward, Campaign; three sons, Bob T. Grissom, Spencer, and Oda Grissom, Doyle; one step-son, A.W. Grissom, Quebeck, and a step-daughter, Mrs. Walter Hill, Tulsa, Oklahoma.  Funeral rites were held Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock at the Brier residence. Rev. Reed R. Compton, pastor of Spencer Baptist Church, and Rev. Reed R. Compton, pastor of Spencer Baptist Church, and Rev. Calvin C. Wigley, pastor of McMinnville Church of God, officiated and burial was in Laurel Creek cemetery in Van Buren county.  Arrangements were by High Funeral Home.

BAKER, Amanda Inez Hillis  (circa 1916 - 1999)

Amanda Inez Hillis Baker, 83
                Spencer resident and Van Buren County native Amanda Inez Hillis Baker, 83, died April 26 at River Park Hospital after an extended illness.  A retired factory worker and a member of the Baptist Church, she was the daughter of the late Robert Lee and Mintie Ethel Barlow Hillis.  She is survived by her husband, A.P. Baker; two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles Ray and Claudene Baker of Spencer and Bob and Imogene Baker of Pikeville; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Penny and Duane Hodges of Spencer; grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Trence and Susie Baker of Acworth, Ga.; grandson, Doug Baker of Pikeville; great- grandchildren, Haley, Calaeb and Drew Campbell, all of Spencer; sister and brother-in-law, Pauline and Thomas Baker of Virginia Beach, Va.; sister-in-law,  Betty Hillis of McMinnville; several nieces, nephews and cousins.  Services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Love-Cantrell & Cope Funeral Home Spencer Chapel with Lofton Graves officiating. Burial will follow at Town Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 8 a.m. until time of service today at the Spencer Chapel.  Love-Cantrell & Cope Funeral Home Spencer Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

BAKER, Inas Lee  (circa 1912-1952)

Mrs. Homer Baker Dies In Knoxville
    Mrs. Inas Lee Baker, 40, wife of Homer Baker, died at Knoxville hospital Thursday. She had been ill for two years.  Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the Mt. Elam Baptist Church. Rev. Clyde McCoy of Knoxville, officiated, and burial was in Long Cemetery in Van Buren county.  Mrs. Baker, a native of Van Buren county, was born November 4, 1911. Her parents were Albert Miller and Vernie Yates Miller and she was married to Mr. Baker January 24, 1932.  She had resided in Knoxville for some time and was a member of the Baptist Church.  In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, Harold Baker, Oak Ridge; one brother, Albert Miller, Jr.; one sister, Mrs. Lee Martin, Nashville; a half-brother, Raymond Miller, Spencer, and a half-sister, Mrs. Robert Wilson, also of Spencer.  High's were in charge of arrangements.

BAKER, Joe Harding  (1877-1941)

Joe Harding Baker
            Joe Harding Baker, 63, died at his home in the seventh district of Van Buren county, January 9. Funeral services were conducted from the residence in Spencer January 12 by John W. High. Burial was in Spencer cemetery.  Born in Van Buren county, July 17, 1877, he was a son of the late Ben and Sara Measles Baker. His wife, Mrs. Erelene Mills Baker, survives.  Arrangements by High Funeral Co.

BAKER, Oscar L.  (1947 - 2000)

Oscar L. Baker, Sr.
     Oscar L. Baker, Sr., 52, of Morrison passed away Sunday, November 19, 2000.  Baker was born December 11, 1947, in Warren County, the son of O.D. Baker and Lotel Green. He worked in maintenance for Cumberland Swan Manufacturers.  Services will be Thursday, November 23, 2000, at 10 a.m. in High’s Chapel with burial in Wesley Chapel Cemetery. Scotty Sorrells will officiate.  Survivors include wife, Deborah Garrett Baker of Morrison; two sons and daughters-in-law, Oscar L. and LaJuana Baker, Jr. of Morrison; Anthony D. and Linda Baker of Morrison; three grandchildren, LaKaryl Leigh Baker of Morrison; Nathaniel Baker of Morrison; Caleb Baker of Morrison; two brothers, Jerry Baker of Morrison; and William M. Baker of Sparta.  High Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

BARNES, Cecil Isaac  (1890 - 1953)

Cecil I. Barnes Dies In Hospital
     Cecil Isaac Barnes, 62, died at a Nashville hospital Monday evening at 8 o'clock, following a short illness.  He had been confined to the hospital for some time. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock at Crain Hill Church of Christ with John W. High officiating.  Burial was in Crain Hill cemetery.  A native of Warren county, Mr. Barnes was born December 11, 1890.  He was a son of Isaac Barnes and Mary Bess Barnes and he was unmarried. He was a member of the Church of Christ.  Mr. Barnes is survived by a sister, Mrs. F. H. Martin, McMinnville.  Arrangements were by High's.

BARNETT, Eugene Earl  (1880-1952)

Van Buren Man Found Dead At Cedar Grove Home
        Eugene Earl Barnett, 71, Van Buren county farmer, was found dead at his home in the Cedar Grove community Christmas day. He had been suffering from a heart condition for several years.  A coroner's jury, empaneled by Ed Rascoe, Van Buren coutny coroner, returned a verdict of death by natural causes. Reports indicated that the man had been dead for about 2 days when his body was found.  Mr. Barnett was a native of Warren county, born September 4,  1880. He was a son of R.L. Barnett and Emma Bell Barnett and he was a member of the Methodist church. He had been engaged in farming and carpenter work until ill health forced his retirment.  Survivors include two brothers, Clyde Barnett, Bone Cave, and Clarence Barnett, Nashville.  funeral services were conducted at the Chapel of the High Funeral Home December 27 at 10 a.m. John W. High officiated and burial was in the Pine Bluff cemetery.  Arrangements were by the High Funeral Home.

BEACH, Arvil H.  (circa 1933 - 2000)

 Arvil H. Beach, 67
               Sparta resident and Van Buren County native Arvil H. Beach, 67, died May 16 in Pikeville after an extended illness.  An industrial engineer, a veteran and a member of the Church of Christ, he was the son of the late Dewey S. and Minnie Walling Beach; and was preceded in death by sister, Avola Wheeler.  He is survived by his wife, Agnes Moffitt Beach; daughter, Debbie R. France of Dowelltown; son, Shannon M. Beach of Spencer; sisters, Lova Binkley of Spencer and Eva Smith of Pikeville; brother, Solon L. Beach of Pikeville; grandchildren, Justin and Casey France of Dowelltown,Celena Vaughn of Sparta and Travis and Jarral Bedwell of Spencer; and one great-grandson, Dalton Vaughn of Sparta.  Services were held Thursday at Love-Cantrell & Cope Funeral Home Spencer Chapel with Gene Brock officiating. Burial followed at WallingCemetery in Van Buren County with military graveside rites administered by VFW Post 5064 and American Legion Post 173.  Love-Cantrell & Cope Funeral Home Spencer Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

BICKFORD, Frances Pauline  (circa 1921-1999)

                  Spencer resident and Bledsoe County native Frances Pauline Bickford, 78, died Dec. 10 at Cumberland Medical Center after an extended illness.  A home- maker and a member of the Baptist Church, she was the daughter of the late Tom and Minnie Hitchcock Brock; and was preceded in death by daughter, Carolyn Bickford in 1951.  She is survived by her husband, Eugene Bickford; sons, James T., Steve and Raymond Bickford, all of Spencer; daughters, Phyllis Measles of Spencer and Marguerite Snow of Crossville; brothers, Alvin and Loyd Brock, both of McMinnville; sister, Thelma Johnson of McMinnville; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grand- children.  Services were held Tuesday at Love-Cantrell & Cope Funeral Home Spencer Chapel with Wayne Sullivan and Ken Norris officiating. Burial followed at Myers Cemetery.  Love-Cantrell & Cope Funeral Home Spencer Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

BILLINGS, Lassie  (1908-2001)

      Lassie Billings, 92, of Wahoo, NE passed away Friday, March 23, 2001. Lassie was born September 16, 1908 near Sparta, TN to George D. and Mattie L. (Stewart) Billings. She lived near Smithville until her marriage to Dibrell Billings on October 30, 1934 in Nashville after which they made their home in Ashland, NE. Lassie was teaching at Bright Hill School prior to her marriage. The family lived in Smithville in the late 1940's and Lassie taught 4th grade at Smithville Grammar School. She taught in Nebraska in the 1950's. She was also a Girl Scout Leader and Sunday School teacher. Lassie is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Ramona and Floyd Nobbe of Goliad, TX and daughter, Rose Nichelson of Wahoo, NE; three grandchildren, Ann Brodecky of Clarkson, NE, Kathryn Pospisil of Wahoo, NE, and Ken Nobbe of Goliad, TX; 12 great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and nephews, J.D. Pedigo of Smithville, and Wayne Billings of Warren, MI; and many friends also survive. She was preceded in death by parents; husband; son-in-law Willard Nichelson; brothers-Richard, John Loring, and Obe Billings; and sister Bessie Pedigo. Funeral services were held Monday, March 26th at 2 p.m. at her home church, First Christian Church, in Ashland, NE, with burial following in Ashland Cemetery.

BISHOP, Violet  Grissom  (1875-1952)

Mrs. Violet Bishop Dies In Van Buren
         Mrs. Violet Bishop, widow of Monroe Bishop, died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Floyd Johnson, in the fourth district of Van Buren county December 20 at 9 a.m. She had been ill five weeks and was 76 years of age.  Funeral services were held December 22 at Shockley cemetery at 10 a.m.  John W. High officiated and burial took place there.  Mrs. Bishop, native of Van Buren county, was born September 14, 1875.  Her parents were Tol Grissom and Janie Bouldin Grissom and she was first married to James Martin.  He died November 8, 1920.  In 1924 she was married to Mr. Bishop and he died in 1939.  Mrs. Bishop was a member of the Church of Christ.  survivors include two sons, Willie Martin and Tommy Martin, Spencer; two daughters, Mrs. Johnson, Laurel burg, and Mrs. Joe Shockley, Spencer; four brothers, Bud Grissom, Spencer, Marion Grissom, New Boston, Mass., Jim B. and Claude Grissom, Texas. High Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

BLANKENSHIP, Janie Lee Clendenon

                    Janie Lee Blankenship, 89, of Rock Island passed away Sunday, September 16, 2001.  Blankenship was born January 1, 1912, in Warren County, the daughter of Harmon Clendenon and Alice Jennings. She was a retired machine operator for Mid-South Funeral Supply and a member of the Corinth Church of Christ.  Services were Tuesday, September 18, 2001, in the High Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Webb Cemetery. Nester Stewart officiated.  Blankenship was preceded in death by two brothers, Charlie Clendenon; Ed Clendenon; sister, Lizzie Johnson Taylor; step-daughter, Audine Dotson; and a step-son, Edwin Blankenship.  Survivors include her son, J. B. Blankenship Jr. of Rock Island; step-daughter, Mamie Prater of McMinnville; two grandchildren, Jim Blankenship III of Belk Community; Donna Villain of NC; three great-grandchildren, Justin Hester; Cody Blankenship; Alec Villain; and seven step-grandchildren.  High Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

BOULDIN, Anne Hillis  (1884 - 1953)

 Mrs. Bouldin, 68, Dies Of Illness
              An illness of six weeks proved fatal Saturday to Mrs. Anne Hillis Bouldin, widow of M.P. Bouldin, who died at the home of a son, Obie Bouldin, at Vervilla at 11:45 p.m. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at Crain Hill Church of Christ. Allen Phy, minister of Central Church of Christ, officiated and burial was in the Crain Hill cemetery.  Mrs. Bouldin, native of Van Buren county, was born July 30, 1884. She was a daughter of Ebb Hillis and Sarah O’Neal Hillis and she was married to Mr. Bouldin in 1900.  He died March 10, 1910. Mrs. Bouldin was a member of the Church of Christ and had made her home with her son for several years.  Besides her son, at  whose home she died, she is survived by another son, Everett Bouldin, Morrison; three daughters, Mrs. Freeman Brown, Mrs. C.W. Grove and Mrs. Herbert Wilcher, McMinnville; two brothers, Dalton and Houston Hillis, Van Buren county; four sisters, Mrs. Alice Mayfield, Mrs. Lizzie Hillis and Mrs. Daisy Dewessee, Van Buren County, and Mrs, Lillian Thompson, Alabama.

BOULDIN, Grace Scott  (1933 - 1964)

               Rites At Spencer For Mrs. Bouldin
Mrs. Grace Scott Bouldin died at 10:30 p.m. Monday in Vanderbilt Hospital at Nashville, following an illness of five months. She was 30 years old. Bob Wilhite conducted the funeral services at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Spencer Church of Christ, and interment followed in Spencer Cemetery. Born July 9, 1933 in Van Buren County, Mrs. Bouldin was the daughter of Arcie Scott and Betty Ann Hennessee Scott. She was a 1953 graduate of Van Buren County High School and was married in 1955 to Hershel Bouldin, who survives. She was a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors in addition to the husband and parents, all of Spencer, include a son, Jerry Bouldin of Spencer; one brother, Bud Scott, stationed with the United States Air Force in Okinawa; and four sisters, Mrs. Ausbon Boyd of Kansas, Mrs. Hershel Munger of Kentucky, Miss Willene Scott of Spencer, and Mrs. Paul Hendrixson of Michigan. High Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

 BOULDIN, Helen Louise Johnson  (circa 1921-1995)

Helen Louise Johnson Bouldin, 74
          Spencer resident and Huntsville, Ala. native Helen Louise Johnson Bouldin, 74, died unexpectedly Oct 28 at River Park Hospital.  A retired employee of Spartan Industries and McMinnville Garment Company and a member of Bethlehem Church of Christ, she was the daughter of Alec and Elsie Belle Grissom Johnson and was preceded in death by one daughter, Glenna Sue Odell in 1980, and two brothers, Raymond and James Leonard Johnson.  She is survived by her husband, Sewell Boulding; one son, Gary Bouldin of Pikeville; one daugahter, Ina Marlene Lowery of Spencer; two sisters, Loene Bouldin of McMinnville and Ina Ryan of Smartt Station; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.  Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Bethlem Church of Christ with Billy Reed officiating.  Burial will follow at Shockley Cemetery.  Visitation will be held after 2 p.m. today at High's.  High Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

BOULDIN, James Charlie  (1919 - 2000)

       James Charlie Bouldin, 80, of McMinnville passed away Thursday, May 4, 2000 in River Park Hospital. Bouldin was born August 29, 1919 in Van Buren County, the son of Monty and Halie Jane Clendenon Bouldin. He served in the army during World War II. He was a maintenance superintendent. He was a member of the Church of Christ at East End. Services were held Saturday, May 6, 2000 in High's Chapel with burial in Long Cemetery. Survivors include wife, Lolene Bouldin of McMinnville; two daughters, Kaye Insell of Gallatin; Shelia Denton of Selmer; three brothers, Paul Bouldin of Spencer; Sewell Bouldin of Piney Community; Hershell Bouldin of McMinnville; three sisters, Opal Roberson of Michigan; Willie Mae Cope of Welchland; Clata King of Welchland; seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. High Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

BOULDIN, Jim Buck  (1888 - 1979)

 Mr. Bouldin
       Jim Buck Bouldin, 90, of 204 Cherry Lane and former Irving College resident, died Monday at River Park Hospital following a two-week illness. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Armstrong Church of Christ with Bro. Vernon Joines and Bro. John W. High officiating. Burial will be in Armstrong Cemetery.  A retired farmer and nurseryman, Mr. Bouldin was married to Susie Rogers Bouldin who preceded him in death in 1964. Mildred Baker Bouldin, 70
              Spencer resident and Van Buren County native Mildred Baker Bouldin, 70, died April 25 at Generations Health in Spencer after a seven-month illness.  A retired shirt factory employee and a member of the Church of Christ, she was the daughter of the late Alonzo and Ivory Pearl Mills Baker, and was preceded in death by two grandsons, Doug and Tom Bouldin, and one brother, Pete Baker.  She is survived by her husband, John L. Bouldin; two sons, Ronnie Gene Bouldin and James Hascel Bouldin, both of Spencer; one daughter, Becky Sue Smith of Spencer; one brother, James Robert Baker of California; one sister, Dortha Mae Hankins of Spencer; three grandchildren, one great-grandchild, several nieces and nephews.  Services were held Monday at Love-Cantrell & Cope Spencer Chapel with Gene Brock and Lofton Graves officiating. Burial will followed at Town Cemetery.  Love-Cantrell & Cope Spencer Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

BOYD, Marion Gillentine  (ca 1902 -1971)

Mrs. Marion Boyd, formerly of Spencer, died early Thursday in Oakland, Calif., after an illness of three weeks.  Funeral services and burial were conducted in California, Friday.  Mrs. Boyd was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joe Gillentine, and was married to A.D. Boyd, who survives.  The Boyds had lived in California for a number of years.  Survivors, beside the husband, include a daughter, Mrs. Betty Altenberge, California; two grandsons; two sisters, Mrs. Bessie Gillentine Curtis, McMinnville, and Mrs. Maggie Gillentine Hillis, Bone Cave, and a brother, Parker Hillis, Anderson, Ind.

BRADY, Beatrice Hillis (circa 1892-1972)

Mrs. Beatrice Brady, 80-year-old resident of Spencer, died of an extended illness in McMinnville Nursing Home at 4 a.m. Tuesday.  A native of Van Buren County and a member of the Church of Christ, she was the daughter of John Houston and Nellie Barnes Hillis.  She was married to James Brady, who preceded her in death in 1963.  Survivors include two sisters Jerusha Kell and Mrs. J.L. Graham, both of Van Buren County; a brother James Irving Hillis, also of Van Buren; two step-sons, Robert S. Brady and Hugh Brady, both of McMinnville; two half-brothers, Nolan and Leslie Hillis, both of the neighboring county, plus several nieces and nephews.  With John W. High and W.C. Richardson officiating, final rites were conducted in High's Chapel at 2 p.m. Wednesday, interment being in Crain Hill Cemetery.  Arrangements were by High's, Inc.

Mrs. Emma Chandler Breedlove, 53, died Friday at Euclid - Glenville Hospital after two months illness. Born in Van Buren County, Tennessee, Mrs. Breedlove had lived in Painesville, Ohio for 18 years.              Mrs. Mattie Vesta Bright died at her home in the fourth district of White county at 10 o'clock on the afternoon of January 10. Funeral services were conducted from the Jericho church January 12, by John W. High. Burial was in the church cemetery.  Mrs. Bright, who was born in Van Buren county September 30, 1890, was the daughter of W.L. and Mary Clark Blankenship.  She was a sister of John E. BROCK, Frank  (circa 1930 - 1999)

      McMinnville resident and Van Buren County native Sam Franklin (Frank) Brock, 69, died unexpectedly June 26 at River Park Hospital.  A retired heavy equipment operator and a member of the Baptist Church, he was the son of Sam and Sissie Craig Brock; and was preceded in death by son-in-law, David Buckner; brothers, Bailey, Emmett and Dave Brock; sisters, Geraldine Craig, Martha Craig, Ruth Brock, Jewell Brock, Clara Belle Brock and Gladys Brock.  He is survived by his wife, Emma Brock; two sons and daughters-in-law, Joe Warren  and Teresa Jones of Gallatin, and Gary W. and Sherry Jones of McMinnville; two daughters, Phyllis Buckner of Rock Island and Debbie Minton of McMinnville; one sister, Minnie Mabe of McMinnville; nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, Lauren Smith of McMinnville and Jacob Ely of Woodbury.  Services were held Tuesday at High’s Chapel with Danny Sullivan and Joe Warren Jones  officiating.         Lela Brock, 89, of Spencer passed away July 20, 1999.  Brock was a retired factory worker and attended Spencer Church of Christ. She was born December 27, 1909 in White County, the daughter of Robert Bobby Davis and Laura Roberts Davis.  Services were held Thursday July 22, 1999 in Love-Cantrell and Cope Spencer Chapel with burial in Cummingsville Cemetery. Bro. Bobby Wilhite and Bro. Ewlin Mahan officiated.  Survivors include one son, Gene Brock of Spencer; daughter-in-law, Sylvin Brock of Spencer; one daughter, Josephine C. BROWN, Alice Pearl Sparkman Glenn

Mrs. Alice Pearl Sparkman Brown, 84-year old Daylight community housewife, died at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday in Faulkner Springs Hospital.  She had suffered an illness of four months.  Funeral services were held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Bethlehem Church, with Clayton Gribble and Ronnie Martin officiating.  Burial was in Bethlehem Cemetery.  A native of Van Buren county, she was born May 16, 1882, and was the daughter of the late Andrew Jackson and Laura Gribble Sparkman.  She was married to Charles H. Brown, who preceded her in death and was a member of the Church of Christ.  Survivors include two nieces, Mrs. L.E. Pinegar of McMinnville, and Mrs. Mace Parish of Grandpass, Ore., and one nephew, Leverne Hobson of Grandpass, Ore.  Love-Cantrell Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

         Winton Cecil Brown, 89, of Sparta passed away Sunday, September 16, 2001.  Brown was born May 5, 1912, in Hilham, TN, the son of William Henry and Malley Florence Rich Brown. He was a farmer.  Services were Tuesday, September 18, 2001, in Hunter Funeral Home with burial in Highland Cemetery.          Funeral rites for Arliss Glenn Bryant, who died at his home at Bone Cave January 20, were held the following day at Laurel Cove church with Rev. Redmon officiating.  Burial was in Laurel Cove cemetery.  Mr. Bryant, 23, was a native of Van Buren county, born February 23, 1929.  He was a son of E.A. Bryant and Louella Stroud Bryant and he served in the army during World War II.  Survivors, besides his parents, are three brothers, John and Robert Bryant, Bone Cave, and L.C.          Cleo Irene Simons Bryant, 93, of Bone Cave passed away Saturday, August 28, 1999.  Bryant was born May 2, 1906, the daughter of George Clinton and Bonnie Grissom Simmons. She was a housewife and attended the Baptist Church.
     Services were Tuesday, August 31, 1999 in Laurel Creek Baptist Church with burial in Laurel Creek Cemetery. Landon Bryant
               Madison Heights, Michigan resident and Van Buren County native Landon Creed Bryant, 70 died suddenly April 27 at Oakland General Hospital.  A metal finisher and a member of the Church of God, he was the son of Emmit and Luella Stroud Bryant.
        He is survived by his wife, Robin Jewel Bryant; two daughters, Paula Weaver of Michigan and Sharon Leo of Florida; two sons, Landon P. and Allen Bryant, both of Michigan; two brothers, John Bryant of Bone Cave and Robert Bryant of Rock Island; three sisters, Rose Laws of Chicago, Grace Cannon of Sparta and Rita Bryant of McMinnville; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.  Services will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. at High's Chapel with Glenn Knight oficiating.  Burial will follow at Laurel Creek Cemetery in Van Buren County.  Military graveside rites will be administered by VFW Post 5064 and American Legion Post 173.  Visitation will be held tonight from 6-10 at High's.  High Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

                Mrs. Josephine Canfield, aged 58, succumbed to a lingering illness at her 114 West Main Street, Franklin, residence at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.  A native of Maury County, she was the wife of Lester Canfield, who survives, and a daughter of the late Joe F. Brock and Mrs. Sea Willow Brock of Antioch, Tenn.  Besides her husband and mother, she is survived by four daughters and four sons, Mrs. Victor Byrum, Mrs. Robert Canterbury, both of Cincinnati; Mrs. Seaborn Milles, Florence, Ala.; Mrs. Arnold Hill, Joe Canfield, both of Franklin; William Canfield, George Town, Ga.; Charles and Rickey Canfield, both of Florence; four sisters, Mrs. Woodrow Sullivan, Mrs. William Batlon, both of Nashville; Mrs. Charles Foster, Sparta, Sarah Reeder, Antioch; four brothers, R.K.            Dave Eugene Carrick, 75, of Sparta passed away Wednesday, February 28, 2001.  Carrick was born July 28, 1925, in White County, the son of Dave and Josephine Gist Carrick.             John Wheeler (J.W.) Cayce, 81, of Sparta passed away Friday, August 24, 2001.  Cayce was born February 4, 1920, in Hopkinsville, KY, the son of Joel Wheeler and Elizabeth Nelson Cayce. He was a retired Sparta Chief of Police.  Services were Monday, August 27, 2001, in Hunter Funeral Home, with burial in Oaklawn Cemetery. CHAMBERS, Charles E.  (1881 - 1953)

C.E. Chambers, First Truck Line Operator, Dies
                Charles E. Chambers, Operator of the first franchised truck line between McMinnville and Nashville, died at Faulkner Springs hospital Sunday morning at 8 o’clock following a month’s illness.  He was 72.  Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the parlors of High Funeral  Home. Elton wood, Dayton, and John W. High officiated and burial was in Mt. View cemetery.  Born April 19, 1881 in Van Buren county, Mr. Chambers was a son of Allen Chambers and Artenesia Tosh Chambers and he was married to Miss Rebecca Ann Johnson, who preceded him in death January 25, 1949.  Mr. Chambers held the franchise for the McMinnville-Nashville frieght service for some 18 years, operating Chambers Truck Company during that period. He sold the franchise in 1938 to R.D. McBroom of Woodbury and since that time had been retired from active participation in business.  During his residence in McMinnville, Mr. Chambers was an active member of Central Church of Christ. He had made his home in Dayton for the past several years. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Jewell Chambers Woodlee, Dayton; two grandchildren., Mrs. Carol Joyce Welch and Wayne Proce Woodlee, both of Dayton; a great-granddaughter, Becky Welch, Dayton; four brothers, Elijah, Elisha, Allen and Gaston Chambers, all of Dallas, Texas; a  half brother. M.E. Chambers, Old Hickory, and two sisters, Mrs. Frank Cantrell, McMinnville, and Mrs. Jonah Hale, Spencer.  High Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

CHAMBERS,  Cornelia  (???? - 1953)

Aunt of McMinnville People Dies In Texas
               Mrs. Cornelia Chambers, wife of Elijah Chambers and aunt  of several McMinnville residents, died in Dallas, Texas, Thursday. She suffered a stroke of Paralysis the Tuesday previous and never regained consciousness.  Funeral services and burial took place in Dallas Sunday.  Mrs. Chambers, the former Miss Cornelia Cotton of Van Buren county, had resided in Texas for a number of years. She was a member of the Church of Christ.  Survivors include her husband, two sons and a daughter.  She is also survived by the following nieces and nephews in the McMinnville area.  Circuit Court  Clerk, J.A. Chambers, Mrs. Paul Phifer, Mrs. Marcus Biles, Mrs. John Bell, Mrs. Elza Denton and Mrs. Charles Sparkman. Mrs. E.F. Chambers of McMinnville is a sister-in-law. Mr. Chambers, Mr and Mrs. Phifer, L.C. Clendenon and Nelson Chambers went to Dallas for the funeral services.  They returned home Tuesday.

CHANDLER, Andrew H.  (1912 - 1994)

       Services for Andrew H. Chandler, 82, of McMinnville, TN, a former Painesville resident, will be held at 11:00 am Monday at High's Funeral Home, 101 N. College St, McMinnville. Mr. Chandler died Oct. 22 in Nashville. Born July 30, 1912, in Van Buren County Tennessee, he lived in Painesville before moving to McMinnville 19 years ago. He was employed at Ohio Rubber in Willoughby, retiring in 1975. Survivors are his wife, Iva (McCoy); daughters, Irene and Louise (John) Maddle of McMinnville; sons William of McMinnville, and Robert of Painesville; sister Vinnie; brothers Arnold and Conard; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. His brothers, Walter, Quint, and Bass; and sisters, Gladys, Della, and Emma, are deceased. Friends may call from 1 to 9 pm today and 8 to 11 am Mondya at the funeral home. Burial will be in McElroy Cemetery in Bone Cave, TN.

CHANDLER, James Bascom (circa 1904 - 1963)

       James B. Chandler, 59, of 24365 Farringdon St., Euclid, died Wednesday at the Chase Brass Copper Company following an accident at the plant. Mr. Chandler, father of James L., of Perry, and John D. of Madison, was a 19-year employee of the company and had lived in the northern Ohio area for the past 23 years, coming from his birthplace in Van Buren Co, TN. Surviving him besides the two sons are his widow Jean; son, Billy Joe of McMinnville, TN; daughters, Mrs. Ruth O'Niel of New York, and Mrs. Francis Hall of Euclid; stepsons Thomas and Frank Davis of Euclid and nine grandchildren. Other survivors are brothers Andrew of Painesville, Walter of Pierpont, Arnold, Quentin and Conard, all of Doyle, TN; sisters, Mrs. Gladys Sparkman and Mrs. Vinnie Wiggington, both of Tennessee. He was employed for 23 years at Uniroyal in Painesville and then worked as a field representative for the United Rubber Workers five years before retiring in 1974. Mr. Chandler was a World War II Army veteran, a member of Masonic Lodge 307 of Madison, the American Legion, and was president of U.R.W. Local 553. Survivors include his widow Maxine (Werbeach), two sons, James Rick and Daniel Max, both at home; two brothers, John of Perry and Billy Joe of McMinnville, TN. Funeral services will be 1:00 pm Tuesday at Mulqueeny Spear Funeral Home, 312 Eagle St., Fairport Harbor. Rev. Marvin Werbeach of North Royalton Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Painesville.

      Lester Davis Chandler, 71, passed away Friday, June 21, 2002 in Des Moines, Iowa. Chandler was born Friday, October 10th, 1930, in Bone Cave, TN and was the son of Walter and Delma White Chandler. Services will be held Wednesday, June 26th at 11:00 am at Spear-Mulqueeny Funeral Homes, Painesville, OH. Rev. Roger Loomis of the First Assembly of God is officiating. Interment will be at Williams Cemetery, Leroy Twp., Ohio.

       Funeral services for Mattie Mai Chandler, 61, who died at her home on Route 1, Doyle, Thursday, July 6, were conducted from the residence Saturday afternoon by John W. High.  Burial followed in McElroy  Cemetery.  The deceased is survived by 12 children.

CHANDLER, Walter Daniel (1908 - 1970)

       Walter Daniel Chandler, Walter Daniel Chandler, 62, of Anderson Rd., Pierpont, died in his home Monday at 10:30 am. Death was due to a heart condition. A farmer, Mr. Chandler was born in Van Buren County, TN, on Jan 19, 1908, the son of Dow and Mattie Davis Chandler. Survivors include his wife, Delma; three daughters; five sons, including Lester Chandler of Painesville; two sisters; four brothers, including Andrew Chandler of Painesville, and 20 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at Waters-Childs Funeral Home, Pierpont, at 2:00 pm Thursday. Calling hours will be observed at the funeral home Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm.

              Martha Curtis Christian of Spencer passed away Saturday, September 15, 2001.  Christian was born in Van Buren County. She attended the Church of Christ.  Graveside services were Sunday, September 16, 2001, in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Candace Brewer officiated.  Christian was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Jefferson Christian; son, Thomas Edward Christian; grandson, John Thomas Rogers;  and brother, Willie Allen.  Survivors include four daughters, Leone Hale of Spencer; Madelyn Tenpenny of Nashville; Linda Hillis of McMinnville; June Rogers of Spencer; brother, Lawson Allen of Spencer; seven grandchildren; thirteen grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchildren.  Love-Cantrell & Cope Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

     Ollie Clark, 97, of Sparta passed away June 23, 1999 in Cookeville Regional Medical Center in Cookeville.  Clark, a housewife, was born March 1, 1902 in Van Buren County to Titus and Wilma Manus.  Services were held Friday, June 25, at 2 p.m. at Hunter Funeral Home with burial in Highland Cemetery.  Fate Wilson and Tony Wilson officiated.  Survivors include son, S.G.               Crain Hill Rites For Mrs. Cole, 74
Mrs.  Eugenia Eveline Cole, wife of John Cole, died at her home in Spencer Saturday morning at 1:50 o'clock, following an illness of four months. She was 74.  Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the Crain Hill Church of Christ, Newton P. Gribble minister of Spencer Church of Christ , and John W. High officiated and burial was in Crain Hill cemetery.  Mrs. Cole was a native of Van Buren county, born September 21, 1877. She was daughter of George Grove and Parrot Drake Grove and she was married to Mr. Cole February 4, 1894.  She was a member of the Church of Christ.  Besides her husband, she  is survived by two sons, Leton Cole, Mishhawauka, Ind., and Ray Cole, Logansport, Ind., two daughters, Mrs. Walter Galloway, Seymour, Ind., and Mrs. Raymond Martin Spencer; three brothers, Hiram Grove, Huntsville, Ala., Joe Grove, Spencer, and Everette   Grove, Oklahoma City, Okla.; one sister, Mrs.  Lou Curtis, McMinnville. Arrangements were by High Funeral Home.

           Floyd Cole, 77, of Sparta passed away July 23, 1999. Cole, a dairy farmer, was born March 10, 1922 in White County the son of James Solomon Cole and Sarah Seabolt Cole. CONNELL, Sally Cummings

Mrs. Connell, Mother Of Mrs. McWhirter, Dies At Cummingsville
              Mrs. Sally Cummings Connell, stepmother of Mrs. N.P. McWhirter of Rock Island, died unexpectedly at her home at  Cummingsville, Van Buren county, Saturday, a few hours following a coronary thrombosis attack.  Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at Cummingsville Methodist Church with Rev. W.D. Owen officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.  A native of Van Buren county, Mrs. Connell resided in the community all of her life, except for short periods spent in Mississippi and Alabama.  She was a daughter of Joe and Virginia Cummings Denny and was a devoted member of the Methodist Church and was active in community and club affairs.  At one time, Mrs. Connell served as Grand Worthy Maton of the Order of the Eastern Star in Mississippi.  Her husband preceded her in death seventeen years ago.  Besides Mrs. McWhirter, she is survived by a son, Joe Frank Connell, Oak Ridge, with whom  she made her home; a brother, Mal Cummings, and two grandsons.

           Stella Margie Coppinger, 89, of McMinnville passed away July 21,1999. Coppinger was born December 1, 1909 in Grundy County, the daughter of John Gross and Frances King. She attended Philadelphia Baptist Church. Services were held Thursday, July 22, 1999 in the chapel of High Funeral Home with burial in Philadelphia Cemetery. Glyn Killian officiated. Survivors included two sons, J.C. Coppinger of McMinnville, Frank Coppinger, Jr. of McMinnville; two sisters, Elizabeth Gross of Altamont, TN, Ollie Belle Tate of Altamont, TN; one brother, Leonard Gross of Beersheba Springs, TN; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. COX, Jimmy Darrel

          Jimmy Darrell Cox, 48, passed away June 29, 1999, at River Park Hospital in McMinnville. Cox, a production manager for Volunteer Flooring Company and a member of the Baptist church, was born January 10, 1951 in Warren County. He was the son of William Nathan and Georgia Pearl Stewart Cox.  Services were Thursday, July 1, 1999 in the chapel of High Funeral Home with burial in the Long Cemetery. COX, Lester

         Lester Cox Sr., 70, of Sparta passed away Saturday, February 17, 2001.  Cox was born July 31, 1930, in White County, the son of George Washington Cox and Mattie Tumblin Cox.  He was retired from Sparta Concrete Company.  Services were Tuesday, February 20, 2001,  in the Thurman Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Big Springs Cemetery. Brother Edwin  Hayes and Brother Greg Capps officiated.  Cox was preceded in death by his parents and his  sister, Elizabeth Cox.  Survivors include his wife, Lois Cox of Sparta; a daughter and  son-in-law, Wilma and Nile Phillips of Sparta; a son and daughter-in-law, Lester and Marie  Cox, Jr. of Sparta; four grandchildren, Kristy Fay Sherrell; Tracie Nicole Phillips; Jessica Rena  Cox; Kelly Sherrell; and a great-grandchild, Kella Rose Sherrell. Afton M. Cummings, 85, of Spencer passed away July 19, 1999.  Cummings was a retired Clerk & Master, County Court Clerk and school teacher in Van Buren County. She was born September 7, 1913 in White County, TN. She was the daughter of B.C. Moody and Lily Ann Seals Moody.  Services were held Wednesday, July 21, 1999 in Love-Cantrell and Cope Spencer Chapel with burial in Cummingsville Cemetery. Lofton Graves officiated.  Cummings was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.  Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, William M. Cummings and Shirley Cummings, of Spencer;  and several nieces and nephews.  Love-Cantrell and Cope was in charge of arrangements.

CUMMINGS, Bill

Bill Cummings, colored Van Buren county farmer, died at his home in the second district February 26 at 8 p.m., following an illness of a year.  He was 76. Funeral services were conducted February 28 at his residence at 2 p.m. with Jake Anderson officiating. Burial was in Sparkman cemetery. A native of Van Buren county, Cummings was born February 24, 1877. He was a son of Peter Cummings and Evie Shockley Cummings and was married to Etter Sparkman. She survives. The deceased was a member of the Baptist church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Betty Cummings, and a sister, Lillie Shockley.

Pauline Cummings
     Pauline Cummings, 49, wife of J.W. Cummings,died at her home in the Cummingsville community of Van Buren county Saturday morning at 2:35 o’clock, following an illness of eleven months. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the colored Church of Christ in Sparta.  Burial was in Pleasant Hill cemetery. A native of White county, the deceased was born September 2, 1904. She was a daughter of  Bill and Marcus Burden Cummings and she was a member of the Church of Christ.  Besides her husband, she is survived by five sons and six daughters. J.B. Cummings of McMinnville was a son. Arrangements were by High Funeral Home.

           Mrs. Mary Lou Cunningham, 65, Van Buren county native, died unexpectedly at her home in Murfreesboro last Sunday morning at 5:30 o'clock.  Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at Hebron Church of Christ. John W. High officiated and burial was in Hebron cemetery.  Born August 9, 1888, Mrs. Cunningham was a daughter of Wiley Curtis and Susie Bouldin Curtis. She was a member of the Church of Christ.  Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Cantrell Mills, Memphis; four sons, Grover and Thomas Fults, McMinnville, J. V. and James Edward Fults, Murfreesboro. Also one brother, Will Curtis, Palmer. Highs were in charge.

CURTIS, Bessie Gillentine  (circa 1894-1976)

Mrs. Bessie Gillentine Curtis, 82-year-old resident of the Irving College community, died of a lingering illness at her home at 6:45 a.m. Saturday.  A retired teacher and member of the Church of Christ, she was the wife of Bruce Curtis, Sr., who survives, and was a daughter of the late Joe and Vida Campen Gillentine.  In addition to her husband she is survived by a son, Bruce Curtis, Jr.; a brother, Parker Gillentine, Anderson, Ind.; a sister, Mrs. Maggie Hillis, BOne Cave, and a grandson.  Brothers Edward Walker, Alvin Pegg and John W. High conducted last rites at 11 a.m. Monday in High's Chapel, interment being in HIlls Creek Cemetery.  High's, Inc., was in charge of the arrangements.

Rites At Smyrna For Mrs. Curtis
          Funeral rites for Mrs. Louise Roberts Curtis, 72, widow of Tom Curtis, were conducted Monday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock at Smyrna Church of Christ. John W. High officiated and burial was in Smyrna cemetery. Mrs. Curtis died Sunday morning at 11: 45 o’clock at her home on Beersheba Road after an illness of two weeks. A native of Van Buren county, she was born October 31, 1880. She was a daughter of W. Roberts and Martha Grissom Roberts and she was married January 25, 1901 to Mr. Curtis. He died several years ago. Mrs. Curtis was a member of the Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons, Thurman Curtis and William Curtis, McMinnville; six daughters, Mrs. Ova Woods and Mrs. Ocie Russell, both of McMinnville; Mrs. Oma Gambill, Shelbyville, Mrs. Beatrice Smith and Mrs. Ethel Pirtle, both of Fayettville and Mrs. Zadie Kesey, McMinnville. Also several brothers and sisters.  High Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

     Tom Curtis, retired farmer, died at Medical Clinic Thursday morning at 9 o’clock, following an illness of a week. Mr. Curtis, 72, resided on Beersheba road. Funeral rites were held Friday afternoon at 3:30 o’clcck at Smyrna Church of Christ. John W. High officiated and burial was in Smyrna cemetery.
