Cheap Fruit Cake

1 cup sugar

1/2 cup shortening or butter

1 cup sour milk

1 tsp. soda, added to sour milk

1 heaping tsp. baking powder

1/2 tsp. salt

2 cups flour

2 eggs

1 tsp. vanilla

Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs and beat. Then vanilla. Add to this:

1 cup ground nuts

1 cup raisins

grated rind of 1 orange

Add to sugar egg mixture. Add sour milk and soda alternately with flour, salt and baking powder. Beat all together until smooth. Turn into a greased pan or dish. Bake slowly, 45 minutes, or until cake is done. When baked, and while hot, pour the following mixture over top of cake: 1 cup sugar, 1.3 cup strained orange juice, juice of 1 orange if desired. Spread over cake with a knife and let stand until glazed. Serve warm.
