BASHAM, CHALMER L. Chalmer L. Basham, 79, of 205 Edgefield Road, Bristol, Tenn., died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, in National Health Care Nursing Home of Johnson City after a 10-year battle with Alzheimer's Disease. He had been a resident there since August 1997. He was a native of Berkley, W.Va., and a son of the late Rev. J. Lacy and Zetta M. Basham. his wife, Nadine M. Cage Basham, whom he married on March 15, 1947, also preceded him in death. Mr. Basham was a graduate of Bristol Tennessee High School. He joined the U.S. Marines on March 8, 1943, served in the Pacific area and China and was discharged May 7, 1946. He was employed by Monroe Calculating Machine Co. of Bristol soon after it opened and remained for over 20 years until it closed. Just prior to leaving Monroe he bought and managed a retail store/gas station in the Holston Valley area of Sullivan County and was self-employed locally in the building/management of a number of other retail/rental businesses thereafter. Mr. Basham was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church but had been an active participant at the church of The Glad Tidings until his admittance to NHC. Survivors include two sons, Chalmer L. Basham Jr. of Bristol, Tenn., and John S. Basham of Surrey, England; one daughter, Rita B. Payne of Bristol, Tenn.; two sisters, Ann Thompson and Beulah McCray, both of Bristol, Tenn.; one brother, John Basham of Bristol, Tenn.; two grandsons, Robert A. Payne of Bristol, Tenn., and John D. She was a member of Freedom Baptist Church and had formerly worked as a volunteer at NHC. She was the widow of Eldridge H. Booher. CAMPBELL, FLOYD ESCO BLUFF CITY -- Floyd Esco Campbell, formerly of Arizona, passed away Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, in the Hospice House in Bristol, Tenn., after a period of declining health. Floyd was born July 21, 1914, in Arkansas, a son of the late William and Daisy Seals Campbell. He was retired from the Michigan School System. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl Marie Campbell. He is survived by two daughters, Freda Bernice Weber of Sedona, Ariz., and Joyce Camile Hart of Bluff City; two sons, Don Campbell of Portland, Ore., and Gary Campbell of Glendale, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; three sisters; two brothers; and several nieces and nephews.

CHAMBERS, ANNA MAE McLAIN BLUFF CITY -- Anna Mae McLain Chambers passed away at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, at NHC Health Care in Johnson City. Born in Benhams, Va., on May 1, 1911, a daughter of the late John Calvin and Sarah Elizabeth Blair Chambers, she had resided in Bluff City since 1957. Mrs. Chambers retired from Jacob's Creek Job Corps in 1995, following 16 years of service. She was a member of Tri-Cities Church of God in Piney Flats. Mrs. Chambers will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. Mrs. Chambers was preceded in death by her husband of 31 years, Carl E. Chambers in 1958; a son, Carl E. "Bud" Chambers Jr.; a grandson, Anthony Keith Osborne; three brothers; and one sister. CUNNINGHAM, WILLIAM CURTIS Jr. William Curtis Cunningham Jr., 56, of 1117 Carolina Ave., Bristol, Tenn., formerly of Anchorage Cove, Triangle, Va., went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at home following three years of many illnesses. Born in Smithfield, NC, he had lived most of his life in Northern Virginia. He was the son of the late Essie Geraldine Weatherholtz and Guy Weatherholtz of Front Royal, Va. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the International Elevator Constructors Union Local 10 in Washington, DC, Metro Area. He served two tours in the Vietnam War, where he received two Purple Hearts during combat and received a Bronze Star for valor. He was of the Protestant faith. Survivors include: wife, Elizabeth Ann Dillard Cunningham, Bristol, Tenn.; daughter, Kimberly Ann Smith, Leesburg, Va.; two stepsons, Gary Wayne Boardwine, Powhatan, Va., and Christopher Wade Boardwine, Alexandria, Va.; stepdaughter, Kimberly Shann Coeburn, Woodbridge, Va.; brother, Ricky Weatherholtz, Front Royal; three granddaughters, Melanie Jane Cunningham, Leesburg, Va., Krystle Nicole Wood, Leesburg, and Kerri Ellen Boardwine, Powhatan; grandson, Joshua Todd Boardwine, Powhatan; and his many extended family members and family who loved him. DALTON, PHYLLIS S. KNOXVILLE – Phyllis S. Dalton, 63, found eternal peace Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001, at Fort Sanders Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville. She was a resident of Bristol Tennessee for 13 years and worked as a manager at Roadrunner Texaco on West State Street for most of those years. She had been livng in Knoxville for the past year and a half. She was employed by Weigel's at Kingston Pike NW and Lenoir City. She was born in Hagerstown, Md. She is survived by five sons, Donald Beard of Maryland, Marvin Sonner Jr. of Abingdon, Va., Mark Sonner of Virginia, Matthew Sonner of Virginia, Michael Sonner of Nevada; two daughters, Doretta (Dodie) Smith of Bristol Tennessee, Jolinda (Jody) Patrick of Knoxville; one sister, Barbara Beard of Mississippi; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. HAGA, LOIS LULA Lois Lula Simpson Haga, 84, of 316 Carolina Ave., Bristol, Tenn., went to be with our Lord Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, in the Bristol Nursing Home, Bristol, Tenn. Mrs. Haga was a native of Algoma, W.Va., but had lived in the Bristol area for the past 47 years. She was a retired employee of Washington and Lee Elementary School with 20 years of service. Lois was a devoted daughter to her mother, whom she took care of until her death in 1964. She was a member of the Shelby Street Church of God. She was preceded in death by one brother, Raymond Adkins, and one sister, Lilly Mae Adkins. Survivors include two sisters, Catherine Mercer of Bristol, Va., and Mrs. Robert (Mary) Brackens of Wytheville, Va.; and four brothers, Walter Adkins Jr., Frank Adkins and Charles Adkins, all of Princeton, W.Va., and William McKinley Adkins of Bristol, Tenn. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, in the Akard Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Dwayne Green officiating. HARLESS, CLAUDE W. Claude W. Harless Sr., 74, 416 Lakeview St., Bristol, Tenn., died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area, a retired salesman for Virginia Wholesale (formerly Jones Wholesale), U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was of the Baptist faith. MANIS, JAMES CLIFFORD "J.C." BLOUNTVILLE – James Clifford (J.C.) Manis Jr., 46, went to be with his Heavenly Father Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, of an apparent heart attack. J.C. was born Oct. 17, 1955, in Sullivan County, a son of the late James Clifford Manis Sr., who passed away July 13, 1978, and Nancy (Horne) Manis Black of Blountville. J.C. was a former employee of Norfolk Southern Railway for 21 years. He was employed by Southern Building Systems. J. C. was an active and dedicated member of Charity Baptist Church where he was an ordained deacon. J.C. had faith in his Lord and his fellowman. He had love, was forgiving, a sincere and a kind person whose smiling face brought joy to those he touched. He was a dedicated husband, dad, grandfather (to a very special grandson he loved dearly), a brother and son. He was a member of B.S.A. , served as assistant scoutmaster and Popcorn Kernel. MAYS, MARGARET H. Margaret H. Mays, 79, a native and lifelong resident of Bristol, Va., died on Dec. 7, 2001, after a lengthy illness at her daughter's home in San Antonio, Texas. Mrs. Mays was the daughter of the late Robert and Mamie Brown Harley of Bristol, Va., and the former wife of the late Verlin R. Mays. She was a graduate of Virginia High School and worked early in her career as a bookkeeper and payroll clerk for Monroe Industries and Clark TV and Radio. Until her retirement in 1987, she was employed as a bookkeeper and payroll clerk for the City of Bristol, Tenn. She was an active member of Walnut Grove Presbyterian Church and enjoyed participating in church functions, traveling with family and friends and performing musical theater as a member of the Bristol Parks and Recreations Senior Choir. She moved to San Antonio in February 2000 for health reasons. Survivors include daughters, Teresa Jean (Terry) M. Burgess (Walter) of San Antonio and Elizabeth A. (Anne) M. Threlkeld of Orange, Va.; four adored grandchildren, Adam A. MILLER, CECIL LEE HONAKER -- Mr. Cecil Lee Miller, 55, of Hess Drive passed away Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, in a Bristol, Tenn., hospital. Born June 1, 1946, in Russell County, Va., he was a son of Gaynelle Lockhart Miller of Swords Creek, Va., and the late James Carlos "Pete" Miller. He had resided in the Honaker area his entire life and attended the Honaker Church of God. He had served in the U.S. Army, having been stationed in Germany. He was a retired coal miner, having been employed by Dominion Coal Corporation with 28 years of service. MOORE, EDITH MARIE LOVELL NORTON -- Edith Marie Lovell Moore, 81, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at Bristol Nursing Home, Bristol, Tenn. She was the daughter of the late William M. and Lillie Mae Lovell. She spent most of her life in the Wise County area. The last 15 years were spent in Lee County, near Jonesville, Va. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted Virgil Moore; two sisters, Thelma Huff and Edna M. Couch; three brothers, Curtis L. Lovell, William Clarence Lovell and Johnny E. Lovell. OLSON, EDWIN EARL NEBO, NC -- Edwin Earl Olson, 71, of North Shore Drive, died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at his residence following a lengthy illness. Mr. Olson was born on May 28, 1930, and was a son of the late Eula "Julie" and Edwin O. "Ole" Olson of Bristol, Tenn. Survivors include his wife, Shirley, of the home; three sons, Ted M. Olson, of the home, Mark S. Olson of LaGrange, Ga., and Edwin P. Olson of Columbus, Ga.; daughters-in-law, Sandra E. Olson of Columbus and Sue Olson of LaGrange; grandchildren, Amanda Sloane, Ashley Olson and Andrea Olson, all of Columbus, and Jennifer L. Olson and Matthew E. Olson of LaGrange; great-grandchildren, Lydia Orr, Kyle Sloane and Hunter Sloane; and brothers, William V. Olson, Charles Olson and John G. Olson, all three of Bristol, Tenn. Ed earned a full football scholarship to William and Mary College in Williamsburg, Va., from his football career at Tennessee High School. He also attended East Tennessee State College. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean conflict. He retired after 40 years service with American Thread Co. and Coates N. American. He was in the industrial sales department and had made many friends all over the country. He was a loyal employee and a much-loved family man. A devoted Christian, Ed attended McDowell Presbyterian Church. He was affectionately known as "Pops" at South Mountain Children's Home where he helped deliver sweets to the children. RANDOLPH, BEULAH MAGDALENE KINGSPORT – Beulah Magdalene Randolph, 66, went to be with the Lord 7 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, 2001, in the Johnson City Medical Center after a period of declining health. Beulah was born Jan. 2, 1935, in Tookland, Va., a daughter of the late Bubby Jackson and Arminty Jane (Dales) Mooney. Beulah worked as manager/cashier of Tri-Cities Builders, a former employee for Tri-Cities Memory Garden and was a hairdresser. She was a member of the Church of Christ of Fall Branch. Beulah was a strong worker for her family and for the Lord. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Aretha June Randolph; brothers, Arville, Henry, Louis and James Mooney; sisters, Mary, Pearly Mae, Florence and Naomi. SHINN, RICHARD "DICK" Richard "Dick’’ Shinn, 79, of Bristol, Tenn., died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, in Richmond. He was a lifelong resident of Bristol, the son of the late Oscar and Ada Byrd Shinn. A veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II, he retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture with more than 30 years of service. He was a member and former commander of American Legion Post 145, member of VFW Patton-Crosswhite Post 6975 and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church. Mr. Shinn was a volunteer worker for many years for the March of Dimes, a former coach for Western Little League, a former baseball player with the State Liners and was an avid sports enthusiast and golfer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine Coles Shinn in 1997. SIMS, BETTY JO SUMNER Betty Jo Sumner Sims, 67, of 6047 Walker Mountain Road, Bristol, Va., went to be with the Lord, her sweet husband Lee and her father, mother and brothers late Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001. She was born in Sullivan County, Tenn., and made her home in Bristol since 1956. She was of the Baptist faith. She was retired from Valleydale Packers after over 15 years of service. SKEENS, LILLY VIRGINIA Mrs. Lilly Virginia Skeens, 83, of Bristol, Va., passed away Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at home. She was born in Russell County, Va., having moved to Bristol in 1978. She attended the Walker Mountain Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arch Kiser Skeens, and six children. Lilly will be missed and was loved by all. SMITH, WILLIAM CLAYTON William Clayton Smith, 65, Bristol, Va., passed away on Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at Ft. Sanders Park West Medical Center in Knoxville. He was a native of Jewel Ridge, Va., and the son of the late William Leck and Myrtle Stevenson Smith. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in Germany during the Berlin Crisis. He lived most of his wife in Bancroft, Mich., and moved to Bristol in 1992 after retiring from General Motors. His time since retirement has been devoted to his family and his love of woodworking and carpentry. WITT, NELL GRAHAM NEWMAN Nell Graham Newman Witt died Dec. 11, 2001, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born on Dec. 30, 1917, in St. Charles, Va. Mrs. Witt graduated from St. Charles High School, attended Hiawasse College and received her bachelor of science degree form East Tennessee State University. She taught school for 33 years, having been a teacher in both Virginia and Tennessee. She was a lifelong Democrat, having served as past-president of the Democratic Women's Club of Sullivan County, Tenn., in 1977. She was a Tennessee Colonel and a past voting delegate to the National Democratic Convention representing Tennessee. Mrs. Witt was appointed to the Bristol Tennessee Housing Authority Board from 1981 to 1991, serving as chairman for the last three years of her tenure. She was active in the Lovelady Chapter of the DAR since 1951 and was a member of State Street United Methodist Church. Mrs. Witt was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Price Witt. She is survived by two sons, Kent Price Witt of Reno, Nev., and Dennis Graham Witt of Halifax, Va.; one brother, Norris Newman of Bristol, Va.; and seven grandchildren. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Akard Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jane Taylor officiating. The committal service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the graveside in Lee Memorial Gardens, Woodway, Va. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Akard Funeral Home. WOHLFORD, KATHRYN W. Kathryn W. Wohlford, 73, 1029A E. Valley Drive, Bristol, Va., went to be with the Lord at 1:40 a.m. Friday from Wellmont Hospice House. She was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area and a daughter of the late Frank D. and Kathryn Watson. She was well-known in the retail business and had been the manager of the Fashion Shop for many years. She was a member of Central Christian Church. She is survived by her husband, James E. Wohlford; two daughters, Debbi W. Troball of Bristol, Tenn., and Julie A. Millhorn of Gray, Tenn.; two grandsons, Jayson Troball of Newport, Tenn., and Mason Millhorn of Gray; two special sons-in-law, Fred W. Troball of Bristol, Tenn., and Tony Millhorn of Gray; a granddaughter-in-law, Regina Troball; and three special friends, Katherine Doriot, Janice Meadows and Gertrude Davis. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Sarah Perrigan, A. Louise Miller and Alma Blevins; and two brothers, Douglas Watson and Frank Watson Jr. The funeral service will be conducted at 8 o'clock Sunday evening in the chapel of Oakley-Cook Funeral Home with Dr. Ross Dampier officiating.
