ALFORD, WALTER CECIL Walter Cecil Alford, 83, of 1221 Sugar Hollow Drive, Bristol, Tenn., died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001, in Wellmont Hospice House. He was a native of Sullivan County and a son of the late James and Mary Blevins Alford. He had a great love for the outdoors, hunting, fishing and working with his hands. He was proprietor of Alford Builders, a farmer and, during World War II, worked in Glen L. Martin Aricraft factory. Survivors include his wife, Louise Boughers Alford; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Jerry Morrell of Kingsport, Charlotte and Billy Joe James and Janet and Carl Rhymer, all of Bristol, Tenn., and Devone and Randy Campbell of Bristol, Va.; son and daughter-in-law, James Eugene and Joyce Alford of Bristol, Tenn.; heart-recipient daughter, Sharon Menier of Cuyahaga Fall, Okla., special nephew, Dwight Boyd of Bristol, Tenn., brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Etta Alford of Bristol, Tenn.; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter and son-in-law, Reba and Dennis Edmondson; sister, Beulah Boyd; and brothers, Clifton Alford, Lester Alford, Oscar Alford and Worley Alford. She was a native of Bristol, Va., daughter of the late John Preston and Anna Cantrell Vernon. While in Bristol, she attended Euclid Avenue Baptist Church. ARRANTS, ROBBIE THOMAS BLUFF CITY -- Robbie Thomas Arrants died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, in Montgomery County Nursing Home in Clarksville, Tenn. She was a lifelong resident of Bluff City and the daughter of the late Reed H. Thomas Sr. and Ressie Darr Bryant Thomas. She was a retired employee of Holston Ordinance in Kingsport. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henderson B. Arrants. She is survived by her daughter, Toni Spears Bryan and her husband, Dr. Eugene Bryan of Clarksville, Tenn.; two granddaughters, Tracy Bryan White and her husband Dr. Steve White, of Clarksville and Stephanie Bryan Huber and her husband Craig Huber, of Marina Del Rey, Calif.; two great-grandsons, Bryson and Brady White, both of Clarksville; two nieces, Candy Phelps of Bluff City and Mona Beverly of Knoxville; one nephew, Reed Walter Rutherford of Bluff City; and two sisters-in-law, Laura J. BAKER, EUNICE B. Eunice B. Baker, 70, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, after suffering a heart attack. She was born on Feb. 27, 1931, in Sullivan County, where she lived her entire life. Ms. Baker devoted her time to caregiving and homemaking. She was a member of Gardners Chapel Primitive Baptist Church and attended Chestnut Flats Primitive Baptist Church. Ms. Baker was the daughter of the late Jake K. Baker. Surviving are her mother, Roena B. BALTHIS, WILLIAM H. "BILL" RICHMOND, Ind. -- William H. "Bill" Balthis, 90, of 4100 S. A St., died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at Rose Gate Village. He was born in Bristol, Va., to John C. and Dona Felty Balthis and had lived most of his life in Richmond. He worked 15 years as a machine operator at International Harvester and was owner of Balthis Trucking Co. for 40 years. He attended Central Christian Church. Mr. Bouton was born May 8, 1937, in Elizabethton, Tenn., a son of the late Irvin and Naomi Riddle Bouton, and had made his home in the Bristol area for the past several years. He was a retired employee of Carter County Annex and Northeast Correctional Center and was a former cook at several country clubs. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean conflict. BULLOCK, JAMES B. "JIM"PINEY FLATS -- James B. "Jim" Bullock, 67, 773 Summer Sound Rd., died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2001, at Johnson City Medical Center. Jim was born Oct. 30, 1934, a son of James B. Sr. and Mattie Potts Bullock, and had made his home in the Bristol area all of his life. He was the owner and operator of Bullock Electric, a member of the American Legion Post 145 and 40 and 8, a member of Central Holston Christian Church and a U.S. Navy veteran. BURKE, WILLIE RAY KINGSPORT -- Willie Ray Burke, 68, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001, at his residence after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Russell County, Va., and moved to Kingsport at an early age. He retired from Eastman Chemical in 1993 after over 35 years of service. He was born in Clintwood, Va., a son of the late Congressman John W. Flannagan Jr. and Frances Pruner Flannagan, and had lived most of his life in Bristol. He was a graduate of the Bristol Virginia School System, received a B. A. degree from King College, completed graduate studies at American University in Washington, DC, and earned his J. D. degree from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He began the practice of law in 1947 in partnership with his father in Bristol, Va., and was a founding partner in 1967 in Woodward, Miles and Flannagan, P.C. He specialized in litigation and arbitration of labor disputes. He was a member of Central Presbyterian Church, the Bristol Virginia Bar Association, the Virginia State Bar, American Bar Association, American College of Trial Lawyers, International Association of Insurance Counsel, Who's Who in Society, Who's Who in American Law, International Who's Who of Contemporary Achievement and Two Thousand Men of Distinction. HODGE, HAROLD BOYD "HOPPY" GREENVILLE, SC -- Harold Boyd "Hoppy" Hodge, 63, of 37 N. Estate Drive died Friday, Nov. 9, 2001, at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Born in Kingsport Aug. 13, 1938, he was a son of Hazel Blevins Hodge of Abingdon and the late Charles W. Hodge Sr. Having spent the majority of his first 18 years of life as a patient at Greenville's Shriners Hospital, his lifelong dream was to become a Shriner and help other children who were "differently abled." Through much perseverance, determination and the loving support of his older brother and Shriner, Les Hodge, Hoppy became a 32nd-degree Scottish Rite Mason, a York Rite Mason and ultimately a member of Hejaz Shrine Temple. As a Shriner, Hoppy received many plaques and citations honoring his outstanding service on behalf of the crippled and burned child. He served two terms as captain of the wheelchair unit, treasurer of the scooter unit, honorary member of the Hejaz Motor Corp and earned Diamond status in his Shriner's Crown of Honor. Retired from the City of Greenville with more than 25 years of service, Hoppy was a dispatcher for both the city police department and the county sheriff's office. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his brother and sister-in-law, Les and Dianne Hodge of Greenville; two nephews, Steven W. Hodge of California and Alan J. Hodge of Greenville; and a niece, Kimberly Hodge Wood and family of Tigerville, SC He was predeceased by his father, and also a brother, Charles W. He was a devoted member and deacon of the Walnut Grove Church of the Brethren in Taylors Valley. In addition to his faithful service to his local church, he also served in various positions on the district level. Born on Aug. 24, 1959, in Bristol, Va., he was a son of Joy Walsh Peters of Bristol, Tenn., and the late Noah Samuel Peters Sr. Mr. Peters has resided in this area all of his life, making his home in Bluff City four years ago. He as a 1977 graduate of Sullivan East High School. Mr. Peters had worked for Tri-City Tile. Sam was a born-again Christian attending Corner Stone Free Will Baptist Church since Dec. 22, 1999. SANDERS, ANNA LEE Anna Lee Sanders, 90, formerly of 2366 Highway 126, Bristol, Tenn., died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2001, in NHC Healthcare of Bristol. She was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County, and was the daughter of the late Wiley R. and Della Mae Beard Hall. She was the widow of S. E. "Pete" Sanders and was also preceded in death by a son, Donald E. Sanders; and her twin brother, Herman Hall and another brother, Emmett Hall. Mrs. Sanders was a graduate of Virginia Intermont College, taught for many years in the Sullivan County School System and retired from Blountville Elementary School. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, Blountville OES 419 Chapter of the Eastern Star and the Town & Country Garden Club. Mrs. Sanders was a lifelong member of Blountville Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of the Women of the Church and Circle No. 2. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Robert L. STEELE, DAVID EARL BLOUNTVILLE -- David Earl Steele, 39, of 1872 Highway 75, passed away Friday, Nov. 16, 2001. His untimely death was due to an accidental gunshot wound. David was born June 22, 1962, in Sullivan County, a son of the late Earl Steele and Rebecca Gay Honaker Smith of Bristol. David was a self-employed painter and worked for Quad Cities Cellular Link in Bristol. He was an outdoorsman, attended the Walnut Hill Presbyterian Church and was with the U.S. Army Reserve. David was very talented and able to do many things well. He was a very charismatic person with a heart of gold; he never failed to help a friend and never met a stranger. He lived his life to the fullest and will be dearly missed by many. TAYLOR, DAVID UDELL David Udell Taylor, 79, of 1520 Virginia Ave., Bristol, Tenn., went to be with the Lord on Nov. 15, 2001. He was born on March 1, 1922, the son of the late H.V. Van and Mamie Sheets Taylor. He was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area and retired from Smithkline-Beecham Co. with 34 years of service. He was also well-known in the area for playing music on the autoharp. He played on the radio for many years on Farm and Fun Time and Archie Campbell's Show in Johnson City. He was also an avid fisherman. She was born May 1, 1944, the daughter of the late Johnny Brownlow and Rosalee Duty Miller, had lived most of her life in the Bristol area and moved to Wichita in September, 1998, where she was employed with Raytheon Aircraft. She had attended Fellowship Chapel and was one of the founding members of the Tenneva Squares and a member of the McDonalds Breakfast Club on the Volunteer Parkway. She was born in the Holston Valley Community of Sullivan County, Tenn., a daughter of the late Susie Gilliam Thomas and Nat Tadlock Thomas, and lived in Bristol until moving to Johnson City in 1996. She was a graduate of Bristol Tennessee High School, King College and East Tennessee State University. She taught school in the Sullivan County and Bristol Tennessee School Systems prior to her retirement in 1979 and was a member of the Bristol Tennessee Retired Teachers Association. She was raised in the Cold Spring Presbyterian Church, was a very active member of Central Presbyterian Church while living in Bristol and joined First Presbyterian Church when she moved to Johnson City. She is survived by her husband, William Henry Wilkinson; a daughter, Rebecca S. Wilkinson of Knoxville; two sons, Stephen T.
