ALMAROAD, LELAND DALE BLOUNTVILLE -- Leland Dale Almaroad, 71, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was a lifelong resident of Blountville and a son of the late Elbert and Esther McCrary Almaroad. He was the owner of Dale's Service Center and Car Wash. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War and a member of Patton-Crosswhite VFW Post 6975. He was a member of Blountville Christian Church. Survivors include his wife, Jeanette Almaroad; one brother, Hal Almaroad of Blountville; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Friday in Akard Funeral Home Chapel with Leland Houser and Dwight Shaffer, ministers, officiating. ARNOLD, WAYNE "PICKEL" BRADENTON, Fla. -- Wayne "Pickel" Arnold, 57, died Sept. 17, 2001, at home. Born in Bristol, Tenn., he moved to Manatee County in 1970. He was a self-employed mechanic and a block mason superintendent. He attended Northwest Baptist Church. He served in the Army. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8199. Surviving are his wife, Judy; two daughters, Dawn Burt of Bradenton and Leslie Statzer of Tennessee; three sons, Ralph Schambers of Holmes Beach, Terry Schambers of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Mark Burt of Bradenton; two sisters, Dorothy Rouse of Bristol, Va., and Frances Stipes of Bristol, Tenn.; five brothers, William of Bristol, Va., and Frank, Cecil, Bobby and Kenneth, all of Bristol, Tenn.; and two grandchildren. BAYLY, NATHAN CURTIS REV. The Rev. Nathan Curtis Bayly, 40, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001, from his home in Bristol, Va. He was born in Lower Merion County, Pa., and grew up near Wheaton, Ill. He received his master of divinity degree from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and was the pastor of Cornerstone Chapel on King College Road in Bristol, Tenn. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Abortion Alternatives and Crisis Pregnancy Center. Survivors include his wife, Sandy Bayly; three daughters, Cassie Bayly, Sarah Bayly and Frances Bayly, all of the home; a son, David Bayly of the home; his mother, Mary Lou DeWalt Bayly of Bartlett, Ill.; a sister, Deborah Bayly of Chicago; two brothers, Timothy Bayly of Bloomington, Ill., and David Bayly of Toledo, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Tate Bayly; and three brothers, Joseph Bayly, Danny Bayly and John Bayly. The committal service and burial will be conducted at 11 o'clock Saturday morning at the graveside in Highland Memorial Cemetery on Kingston Pike in Knoxville. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon in the Memorial Chapel at King College. the Rev. Gerry Shibley will officiate at both services. BELCHER, LUCILLE H. Lucille H. Belcher, 85, of Bristol, Tenn., died Monday, Sept. 24, 2001, at home. She was born in Buskirk, Ky., and had resided in Richlands and had been a resident of Bristol, Tenn., for the past 30 years. She was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ransey Lee Belcher; son, Dale S. Belcher; and daughters, Norma Jean See and Wanda Lee Boyle. Mrs. Belcher is survived by one daughter, Sue B. Huffard, Bristol, Tenn.; one son, William G. Belcher of Elizabethton, Tenn.; one sister, Dent Todd of Birmingham, Ala.; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. BENT, CALVIN EDWARD Calvin Edward Bent, 66, of Bristol, Tenn., passed away, Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001, after a long illness. He was a native of Holister, Mo., and lived in the Bristol area since 1975. He was a U.S. Army veteran, retired, with 20 years of service. He was a member of the VFW and a life member of the DAV. He was a member of Steele Creek Missionary Baptist Church. BOWERS, MARY "ETTA" BLUFF CITY -- Mrs. Mary "Etta" Bowers, 80, of 637 Vicars Road died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, in Bristol Regional Medical Center following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Bowers was a native and lifelong resident of Sullivan County and a daughter of the late Samuel and Dora White Hartsock. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. Mrs. Bowers was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh B. Bowers, in 1998; three brothers, Frank Hartsock, Charlie Hartsock and Henry Hartsock; and one sister, Catherine Hartsock. BULLOCK, CLARA LOUISE Clara Louise Bullock, 72, of Bristol, Tenn., went to be with the Lord Friday, Aug. 31, 2001, at her home after a period of declining health. Clara was born May 25, 1928, in Kingsport and was the daughter of the late Joe Vincent and Mary Catherine Danna. She was the widow of James N. Bullock. She was a member of the Deck Valley Baptist Church. She was a former employee of Food Country, where she worked as a cashier. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by a grandson, Kenneth Short, and a brother, Ralph Vincent Danna. Clara was a loving mother, grandmother, and sister whose smile will never be forgotten. He was the son of the late Nave H. and Daisy Mosley Campbell. He was a native of Buledean, NC, and he had lived in the Bristol area for the past four years before moving from Corpus Christi, Texas. He was a brick mason and a former member of the American Legion. He was a U.S. Marine veteran serving during the Vietnam War and was preceded in death by his brother, Fred Campbell; and a sister, Margaret Campbell Humphreys. Curtis graduated from Concord College and had attended Virginia Tech University. He served as a military police officer in the Korean War. He was born in Green Springs, Va., a son of the late Elijah and Sarah Rebecca Harris Gentry, and served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific during World War II. He was retired from the quality control department of General Motors Corporation and was a member of Region 8 of General Motors retirees. HAGAN, GEORGIA MAE SOUTH Mrs. Georgia Mae South Hagan of Bristol, Tenn., died Friday, Sept 21, 2001, in Wellmont Hospice House. Born in Johnson City, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. South. Mrs. Hagan was a summa cum laude honor graduate of East Tennessee State University where she received her B. S. degree. Her M. A. degree was received from Vanderbilt-Peabody. Other advanced study was done at the University of Tennessee and University of Iowa. A teacher for over 40 years, she taught Latin and related subjects at Science Hill High School, Johnson City, and at Tennessee High, Bristol. Following retirement, she taught at Sullins Academy and at King College in Latin and E.S.O. Departments. She played a major role in the state organization of Junior Classical League. She traveled extensively in the states and Western Europe. Mrs. Hagan held membership in American Classical League, American Association of University Women, Johnson City, Monday Club Auxiliary and Gamma Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma for which she was serving as president when Alpha Alpha Chapter was organized in Bristol. For over 50 years, she was an active member of the Bristol Chapter. She belonged to Women's History Club and served a presidential term in Greater Bristol Chapter AARP. Mrs. Hagan was a member of the Christian Church, E. Unaka Christian, in Johnson City, and Central Christian in Bristol. She was a leader in the Loyal Berean Sunday School Class and in women's church activities. Survivors include her husband, Hugh Hagan; two sisters, Mrs. Helen Weaver and Mrs. Gladys Howard, both of Johnson City; niece, Mrs. Jan Haynie of Johnson City; and two nephews, Dr. Alfred C. HATCHER, CARROLL LYNN MARTINSVILLE, Va. -- Carroll Lynn Hatcher, 73, 3130 Dyer Store Rd., died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001, in Wake Forest Baptist University Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC He was born in Bristol, Tenn., a son of the late Marion Hatcher and Mary Edwards Hatcher. He began working at the Bulletin in 1960, was managing editor for Martinsville Bulletin from 1960-72, and was a free-lance outdoor writer for Bulletin for several years. He was a member of Virginia and National Outdoor Writers Association. He was an Air Force veteran serving in Germany from 1950-54. He received a BS degree from Richmond Professional Institute, now VCU, in journalism. McCLANAHAN, ERVIN H. Ervin H. McClanahan, 73 years of age, of Bristol, Va., formerly of Buchanan County, passed away Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon, following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Kennis and Edna Stiltner McClanahan. He had been a lifelong resident of Buchanan County prior to moving to the Bristol, Va., area 15 years ago. He was a former employee of Jackson Hardware & Furniture Company, a former employee of Pet Milk Company and co-owner of E & P Shopping Center at Harman, Va. He was former manager of Coca-Cola Bottling Company Plant, Vansant, Va., and, at the time of his death, was a salesman for Buchanan Oil Company. He was a devoted husband, father, granddad and friend. He treasured the time spent on his tractor in the garden and helping family and friends. He thoroughly enjoyed his work with all the Exxon Associates. O"DELL, PARIS V. "JAY" Paris V. "Jay" O'Dell Jr., 66, of 621 Vance St., Bristol, Va., died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, in the Bristol Regional Medical Center. A lifelong resident of the Bristol area, he was the son of the late Paris V. O'Dell Sr. and Naomi Denton O'Dell. He was a retired construction worker, an avid baseball fan and attended the Antioch Baptist Church. POOLE, RALPH LEE Ralph Lee Poole, 73, of Massachusetts Ave., Bristol, Va., died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001, in Bristol Nursing Home. He was born March 4, 1928, in Winding Gulf, W.Va., and was the son of the late Lessie Jane and James Eddie Poole. He was a native of Montcalm, W.Va., and moved to Bristol in the mid-1950s. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, a member of the East Tennessee Antique Dealers Association, a member of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors and a member of Reynolds Memorial United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy McCracken Poole; and three brothers, Kyle, Bo and J. D. Poole. Mr. Poole is survived by a daughter, Stephanie Lowe, of Bristol, Va.; a son, Philip L. Fleenor, of Bristol, Tenn.; a granddaughter, April Osborne, of Bristol, Tenn.; and a sister, Alice Pennington, of Montcalm. RHEA, KENNETH D. BLUFF CITY -- Kenneth D. Rhea, 56, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Sept. 28, 2001, at Wellmont Hospice House. He was the son of Mrs. Willene Rhea-Diegel of Bluff City and the late Mr. Rhea. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Bluff City and retired from Raytheon Corporation of Bristol, Tenn. Mr. Rhea was a U.S. Air Force veteran stationed at the 90th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Bien Hoa Air Base, Republic of Vietnam. Mr. Rhea distinguished himself by receiving the Air Force Commendation Medal for meritorious service in Vietnam in 1967, and also received a Certification of Achievement as crew chief on F-l00 Aircraft. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife of 33 years, Shirley A. Born in Bristol, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late Conley Sterman and Bertha Wheeler Richards. She was preceded in death by her sister, Virginia Richards Johnson; and brother, Conley Sterman Richards. She was a medical virologist, having trained at the Centers of Disease Control, Atlanta, Ga., and supervisor of the Laboratory of Virology at Charity Hospital, New Orleans, for 24 years. SMITH, HENRY DELBERT Henry Delbert Smith, 89, of Bristol, Va., died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, at Cambridge House, Bristol, Tenn. Born April 28, 1912, in Dickenson County, Va., he was the son of the late Tilden and Martha Kiser Smith. He was a retired coal miner and a member of UMWA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Radford Smith; one granddaughter, Regina Adams; two brothers; and two sisters. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. STEVENS, ARTHUR Arthur Stevens, 88, of Bristol, Va., went home to be with the Lord at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at Wellmont Hospice House following a brief illness. Born in Russell County, Va., on April 1, 1913, a son of the late Ira and Dora Nuckles Stevens, he had resided in this area since 1966, moving from Dickenson County, Va. Mr. Stevens was a retired carpenter and of the Church of God faith. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Stevens was an avid hunter and was known for his collecting of ginseng. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Opal D. Tiller Stevens in 1992; a daughter, Shirley Dean Stevens; and four brothers, Jimmy Stevens, Roy Stevens, Fred Stevens and Doris Stevens. WOLFE, LILLIAN FORTUNE Lillian Fortune Wolfe, a former resident of Bristol, Va., died Sept. 29, 2001, of heart disease at Westminster at Lake Ridge, Va. She was a native of Damascus and attended public schools there. She attended Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Va. She was the first clerk of the Trial Justice Court for Smyth County in Marion. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where she served as Sunday school teacher, elder, assistant treasurer and in a number of circles and committees. She was active in civic and community activities. She served on the Bristol Virginia School Board for over six years as vice-chairman and chairman, as treasurer of the Bristol Library Board, as a member of the Bristol Housing board, and on the board of the Bristol Chapter of the American Lung Association. She was the widow of Dr. Samuel Charles Wolfe. Survivors include one daughter, Jane Wolfe Stilmar of Alexandria, Va.; one sister, Louise Fortune Hall of Damascus, Va.; two grandsons, John Stilmar and Scott Stilmart; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, in First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Gordon Turnbull officiating. Burial will follow in the Knollkreg Cemetery. WOLFE, LOUISE CHEW ABINGDON -- Mrs. Louisa Chew Wolfe, 63, died Monday, Sept. 24, 2001, at Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was a native of Baltimore, Md., grew up in Bristol and had lived in Abingdon for the past 25 years. She was the daughter of the late John and Louisa Chew of Bristol. She was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Abingdon. WOODARD, EMMA GAIL OWENS Emma Gail Owens Woodard, 56 years of age, of Bristol, Va., formerly of the Grundy area, passed away Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, following an extended illness. Born at Cannady, Va., she was a daughter of the late Arnold and Maude Arrington Owens. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County prior to moving to the Bristol area and was a member of Little Prater Church of Christ. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother. Mrs. Woodard is survived by her husband of 33 years, Donald Jack Woodard, Bristol, Va.; one daughter, Martha Dawn and husband Shawn West, Williamstown, Ky.; three sisters, Irene Owens, Route l, Vansant, Va., Nell Matney, Route 1, Vansant and Wilma Owens, Sterling, Va.; and one grandson, Kyle Henry West, Williamstown. She was preceded in death by one sister, Beulah Viers; and two brothers, Freddie Owens and Bernard Owens.
