ALEXANDER, GEORGE D. George D. Alexander, 74, of 1534 St. John St., Bristol, TN, passed away Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, at home following a long illness. He was born in Lebanon and had lived in the Bristol area for 48 years before moving from Castlewood, Va. He was the son of the late Charlie and Ida Grace Alexander. He was a self-employed house painter and of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by two sons, Michael and Glen Alexander. Survivors include: wife, Elsie Austin Alexander; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Daphine Alexander, Bristol, Tenn., Jeannie and Johnny Riley, Bristol, Tenn., and Shirley and Tom Aaron, Calera, Ala.; three sons and three daughters-in-law, Mark and Judy Alexander, Bristol, Va., George Jr. and Nancy Alexander, Bristol, Va., and Dariel and Vicky Alexander, Bristol, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001, at the graveside in Barker Cemetery, Phillips Community, with Rev. Dennis Burnette officiating. Pallbearers will be Steve Riley, Tom Aaron, Johnny Riley and Danny Tate. Mrs. Barker was a member of Sugar Grove Baptist Church and Senior Citizens Club of Benhams. She was a housewife and was preceded in death by her husband, Milt Barker, and a son, Gene Barker. BAZEMORE, NINA VINCILL Nina Vincill Bazemore, 77, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, in Delray Beach, Fla. She was born in Dante, Va., a daughter of the late Everett and Ruby Miller Vincill. She was the widow of Russell Bazemore and was also preceded in death by three sisters, Mildred Winfield, Mable Vincill and Mary Alice Vincill. She was a former resident of Bristol. She is survived by a daughter, Kathryn McMurrain and a special friend, Steve Anger of Boynton Beach, Fla.; four sisters, Dorothy Moore of Bristol, Va., Nancy Cross and her husband, Gene, of Bristol, Tenn., Betty Wright and her husband, Jimmy, of Bristol, Va., and Linda Thayer of Blountville; four brothers, Jim Vincill and his wife, Rachel, of Mountain City, Tenn., Douglas Vincill and his wife, Karen, of Bristol, Va., Danny Vincill and his wife, Marlene, of Nashville and Jerry Vincill and his wife, Barbara, of Bristol, Va.; two granddaughters, Kelly Wondra and her husband, Jason, of Lantana, Fla., and Cari McMurrain of Boynton Beach; three great-grandchildren, J.T., Austin and Madison, all of Lantana; 17 nieces and nephews; and several grand-nieces and grand-nephews. BEELER, ALICE COX DATAW ISLAND, SC -- Alice Cox Beeler, 82, formerly of Hilton Head Island, died Monday, Aug. 20, 2001, at home. Born Dec. 24, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Henry McNutt and Alice Lawson Calhoun Cox. She moved to Hilton Head Island from Bristol, Tenn., in 1990. Mrs. Beeler was a native of Knoxville, Tenn. She graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1940. She worked for the Census Bureau in Washington, DC, from 1940-41 and was an assistant home demonstration agent for Davidson County, Tenn., 1941-43. She married William W. Beeler in 1943 and moved to Bristol, Tenn., in 1944, when her husband opened an orthodontic office there. She was a former member of First Presbyterian Church, Junior League, Blue Stocking Club, Ladies Golf Association, Bristol Country Club, Hobby Club and Woman's History Club in Bristol. Since moving to Hilton Head Island, she was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Junior League and the Women's Association. Mrs. Beeler is survived by her husband, William Wood Beeler of Beaufort, SC; a son, William Wood Beeler Jr. of Knoxville; two daughters, Jane B. Teaster of Colbert, Ga., and Alice B. Miller of Beaufort; a brother, John R. Cox of Oro Valley, Ariz.; a sister, Mrs. Wilson Conner of Gatlinburg, Tenn.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

BLEVINS, VIOLA SHADY VALLEY, Tenn. -- Viola Blevins, 96, died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2001, at Hillview Health Center in Elizabethton. She was a lifelong resident of Shady Valley and the widow of Ambrose Blevins. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Janet C. Tinker; and a grandson, Johnny Gross. Mrs. Blevins was a member of Harmon Chapel Christian Church. She is survived by one son, Wiley E. Blevins of Shady Valley; one daughter, Alta E. Houck of Roseburg, Ore.; one sister, Glenna Trent of Kingsport; one brother, Edgar McQueen, Mountain City, Tenn.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. BOWLING, GLADYS "ALLENE" ELKINS SALT LAKE CITY, Utah -- Mrs. Gladys "Allene" Elkins Bowling, 87, passed away Sunday, July 1, 2001, in South Valley Health Center in Salt Lake City. Born in Manning, Va., she was the daughter of the late James David and Carrie Etter Wheeler Elkins. She was a 1930 graduate of Richlands High School. She attended State Teacher's College of Radford, Va., and graduated with a B. S. in education in 1943. She attended Columbia University in New York City and graduated with a master of arts in 1945. As a teacher, she began teaching at the age of 16 in the Richlands/Bluefield areas of Virginia. She continued her teaching career at Radford College and moved to Maryland to teach at Annapolis Senior High School from the late 1950's until about 1973, when she retired. She was the last survivor of four children and was of the Catholic faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John J. A. Bowling; two sisters, Lena Davis and Vivian Bender; and one brother, James "Buz" Elkins. She is survived by one stepdaughter, Stella B. Pitt of Salt Lake City; four stepsons, James J. Bowling of Lawrenceville, Ga., John J. Bowling of Arlington, Va., William Joseph Bowling of Annapolis and Frank J. Bowling of unknown; six grandchildren, Celange Sanchez, Keva Ford, Vanessa Martell-Rodriguez, Ian J. Bowling, Kendra Cox and Tamara Tupper. BREWER, JOHN HENCLE John H. (Hencle) Brewer, of 102 Rex Rd., Bristol, Tenn., went to be with the Lord on Aug. 29, 2001, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born Jan. 9, 1922, in Boone, NC, and was raised in the Wallace Community of Bristol, Va. He was preceded in death by his parents, Myrtle Love and John Parker Brewer; his wife, Peggy Blaylock Brewer; two brothers, Ronel W. Brewer and Clint Young Brewer. Mr. Brewer was a C.C. veteran for two years and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a founding member of the West Highland Assembly of God and an usher for many years He was retired from the Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation with 50 years of service. Survivors include, daughter and son-in-law, Patty and Martin Hyland of Bristol, Tenn.; grandson, Nicholas Hopkins of Bristol, Tenn.; special cousin, Blanche Greer of Boone, NC, sister and brother-in-law, Alice and Roy Fleenor of Wyndale, Va.; sisters-in-law, Kathy Barrett, Laura Tolbert, Lennie Mae Brewer, Louise Brewer and Elizabeth Doss of Bristol, Tenn.; and numerous nieces and nephews. BUTT, OSCAR LEE Mr. Oscar Lee Butt, 81, of 227 Shirley Dr., Bristol, Tenn., died Aug. 15, 2001, at home. Mr. Butt was a native of Abingdon and a graduate of William King High School. He was a graduate of Emory & Henry College. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served in the South Pacific during World War II. Mr. Butt moved to Bristol in 1953, when he joined what is now Smith-Kline Beecham Pharmaceuticals as a research chemist. He retired from there after 35 years. He was a member and usher at Piney Flats Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frankie S. Butt. Mr. Butt is survived by his son, Joseph L. CAMERON, SARAH C. Sarah C. Cameron, 86, formerly of Montcalm, W.Va., passed away Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, after a brief illness. She was born in Virginia and resided in Washington County, Tenn. She was a member of Montcalm Pentecostal Holiness Church. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW of Bluewell, W.Va. She was retired from T.E.C. in 1963 after 17 years of service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse C. Cameron; and all her brothers and sisters. Survivors include one son, James W. "Buddy" Franks of Johnson City; one stepdaughter, Carol Anders of Gulfbreeze, Fla.; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. GILMER, LUCILLE HARRIS ARLINGTON, Va. -- Lucille Harris Gilmer, who lived in Bristol and Kingsport for many years, died of heart and lung disease in Arlington on Monday. She was 87. There will be a graveside service for Mrs. Gilmer this Friday, Aug. 31, at 3 p.m. at Mountain View Cemetery in Bristol. She will be buried alongside other Gilmer family members, who were prominent in Bristol for many decades. Mrs. Gilmer was born near Murfreesboro, Tenn., and attended what is now Middle Tennessee State University. In the 1930s, Mrs. Gilmer moved to Bristol, Va., to work for the WPA. In 1940, she married Robert Vincent Gilmer, a Bristol native. Together they operated a photography business in Kingsport and had two children, Jo Ann and Robert. Robert Sr. died in 1956. Mrs. Gilmer moved to Northern Virginia in 1963 to work for the federal government. In 1981, she retired as a payroll technician from the Navy Department. Mrs. Gilmer was an officer in the residents association of Culpeper Garden Retirement Home in Arlington. For many years, she was also an officer at Central United Methodist Church in Arlington. Mrs. Gilmer's son Robert died in 1965. She is survived by her daughter, Jo Ann Tooley of Arlington; two grandsons, Mark Tooley of Alexandria and Steven Tooley of Sterling, Va.; one great-grandchild; and a brother and a sister, both of Murfreesboro, Tenn. GRAGG, FLOYD H. BLUFF CITY -- Staff Sgt. Floyd H. Gragg Sr., U.S. Army, retired, 56, died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001, in James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center. A native of the Hickory Tree Community, he was the son of the late Paul and Mary Gragg, and had lived in the Bristol area most of his life. He was a retired U.S. Army veteran with 20 years of service. While in the military, he received numerous medals and commendations including the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, the Air Medal, Senior Parachute Badge, Vietmanese Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Overseas Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal and the Expert Rifleman Medal. GUNNING, PAUL Paul Gunning, 71, of Bristol, Va., died Aug. 20, 2001, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was a lifelong resident of Bristol, Va., and a graduate of Virginia High School Class of 1947. He also graduated with a BA degree from Milligan College and a master's and a doctorate of theology from Carolina University. He was a master sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After 30 years of government service, he retired from the Internal Revenue Service. Mr. Gunning served as a board member for Carolina University of Theology. He was past president of the Bristol Employee's Federal Credit Union. Mr. Gunning was preceded in death by his first wife, Jeanette Gobble Gunning; and his parents, George Paul and Mae Hardin Gunning. HARKLEROAD, LEE E. Jr. Lee E. Harkleroad, Jr., Bristol, Tenn., died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born in Bristol, Tenn., a son of the late Lee E. and Flora Phipps Harkleroad, and was a former resident of Athens, Tenn. He was a veteran of World War II, where he served as a B17 aerial gunner for the Heavy Bombardment Crew 7th Squadron of the 34th Bomb Group, 8th Air Force. He flew 30 missions over Europe and was awarded the Air Medal with 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Oak Leaf Clusters. He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and had a long career in the accounting profession. He was a member of First United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Helen Harkleroad; two sons, Lee (Geno) Harkleroad III and his wife Cynthia, of Chicago, Ill., and Tim and his wife Deborah, of Eddyville, Ky.; two grandsons, Lee "Chip" Harkleroad IV and Julian Harkleroad; a sister, Dr. Malissa Ann Harkleroad Williams; and three brothers, Donald Harkleroad, Lawrence Harkleroad and Ralph Harkleroad; and several nieces and nephews. HAZE, ROBERT C. "BOB" Robert C. "Bob" Haze, 77, of Bristol, Tenn., died Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2001, at Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Oklahoma and moved here from California in 1991. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, a former car dealer, NASCAR race driver, a pilot, an insurance executive and operator of a dude ranch for children in California. LYALL, BEULAH ARRINGTON HARLOW Beulah Arrington Harlow Lyall, 89, of Outlook Point, 826 Meadowview Rd., Bristol, Tenn., died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Lyall, a native of Dickenson County, Va., was born Feb. 22, 1912, the daughter of Floyd M. and Lucretia Yates Arrington. She was from a family of 10 girls. She was married to Glen Harlow in 1937 and they had two children, Glenna and Lucy. She next was married to Dewey Lyall. Both Mr. Harlow and Mr. Lyall preceded her in death. She moved to Bristol, Va., in 1993 where she made many friends. She was an active member of the Bristol Slater Senior Citizens Center where she was in a volunteer program for six years. She was a member of Lick Creek Regular Primitive Baptist Church since 1949. She was preceded in death by her father, her mother and seven sisters, Carrie Counts, Polly Mullins, Maxie Counts, Stella Baker, Maude Hay, Willia Hay and Bonnie Dickerson. MORRIS, BEATRICE M. "BEA" Beatrice M. "Bea" Trammell Morris, 97, 616 Sixth St., Bristol, Tenn., died Monday, Aug. 27, 2001, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born Nov. 19, 1903, in Bristol, Va., the daughter of the late Charles Harrison and Elizabeth Julia McGee Trammell. Mrs. Morris was a retired employee of Western Union with 34 years of service and a former employee of Sears. She was a member of State Street United Methodist Church, where she was very active in the Wesley Philathea Sunday School Class. For several years she was a Red Cross Volunteer during World War II, did volunteer work with the Twin-City Service Center, and was a member of Shamrock Garden Club and the Golden Age Club at the YWCA. WATTS, FRANCES P. PALATKA, Fla. -- Frances P. Watts, 69, died Sunday, July 29, 2001, at Putnam Community Medical Center in Palatka following an extended illness. A native of Bristol, Tenn., she had resided in Palatka for the past four months, coming from Deland where she had resided for over 20 years. She was a graduate of Bristol Virginia High School and attended Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, Va. Mrs. Watts was a homemaker and a devoted mother who enjoyed gardening. He was a veteran of World War II having served with the U.S. Army in Europe (EAME Theater), Philippines (AP Theater) and Japan. He received three Bronze Stars. He was a member of the DAV and attended the Madison House Adult Daycare for the last five years. He was a member of Walnut Hill Presbyterian Church where he served in many capacities and was honored as elder emeritus and served as chairman and board member of Graham Bible College. He was an inventor taking recognition and a reward as well as a patent for the invention. In addition to his parents, his wife, Doris G. Smith Whitaker, precedes Powell in death. YATES, VERONICA WOLFE Veronica Wolfe Yates, devout Christian who touched the lives of many, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2001, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was a native of Sophia, W.Va., and had made her home in Bristol, Va., since 1972. She was a member of Euclid Avenue Baptist Church and the Comtempo Women's Organization. She attended community bible study for more than 20 years. She worked for the Virginia Highlands Community College Educational Talent Search for the past three years and was a devoted Christian who loved to win souls to Christ and to help children achieve higher educational goals. She was a graduate of Concord College. She was preceded in death by her parents, Seth and Bessie Wolfe and a daughter, Victoria Lynn Yates. Survivors: husband, Tom A. Yates; son and daughter-in-law, S. Dean and Angie Yates, Bristol, Va.; one grandchild, Hunter Yates; brother, Dr. Richard (Dick) Wolfe, Abingdon; two nephews, Eric Wolfe, Abingdon, and Travis Wolfe, Mount Pleasant, SC; aunt, Lula Allen, Beckley, W.Va.; special cousins; and very special friends. A special praise service will be Friday 8:30 p.m. following the visitation from 6 until the time of service. The funeral service will be Saturday 2 p.m. at Euclid Avenue Baptist Church with Rev. Bob Jones and Rev. Jim Best officiating. Entombment will follow in Mountain View Mausoleum. Pallbearers will be Joseph A. Robinson Jr., Eric Wolfe, Travis Wolfe, Barry Robinson, Ralph Mills, Henry Cross, Gary Allen, Don Clark, Shannon Lambert, Roger Stevens, Eric Jenkins, Ricky Allen, David Crandall and Lewis Mock. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Smith, Ken Lambert, Ralph (Hoot) Gibson, Vernon Sharrett, Danny Eanes, Jim Hall, Ted Ellis, Bill Bridgemen, Alan Bevins, Tracy Adkins, members of Comtempo Womens Organization, doctors of Internal Medicine and Pediatric Associates of Bristol, physicians and cardiology staff of BRMC and EABC Mission House Committee.
