BACHMAN, JOSEPH S. SALISBURY, Md. -- Joseph S. Bachman, 79, died Sunday, July 29, 2001, at Salisbury Center: Genesis Elder Care. Born Feb. 23, 1922, in Rochester, Minn., Mr. Bachman was raised in Bristol, Tenn. He was the son of the late Harry Wilson and Agnes Hanson Bachman. Mr. Bachman was a graduate of Davidson College and UNC Chapel Hill. He was a professor of history and retired from Salisbury State University as associate dean of the graduate school. He was a veteran of World War II. Joe was an avid tennis player and a lover of jazz and classical music. Mr. Bachman was preceded in death by his wife, Madge Elizabeth White Bachman; and a sister, Ann Bachman. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Sidney Elizabeth and Douglas R. Muir; his twin granddaughters, Julia Hanson and Caroline LaForce Muir, all of Greensboro, NC; a brother and sister, Dr. Harry W. Bachman and Agnes Bachman Cowan, both of Bristol, Tenn.; and several nephews and nieces. Burial will take place at a later date at Mountain View Cemetery, Bristol, Va. BLAND, STELLA M. Stella M. Bland, 91, of Pace Drive, Bristol, Va., died Thursday, July 12, 2001, at Bristol Nursing Home. She was a native of Washington County. She had lived and worked in Georgia most of her life and had moved back to Bristol 10 years ago. She was of the Presbyterian faith and attended East Bristol Church of Christ. She was the widow of Marshall Bland. Mrs. Bland is survived by several nieces and nephews. BLEVINS, MAE IRENE CHURCH KINGSPORT -- Mae Irene Church Blevins of 1310 Center St. passed away Saturday, June 30, 2001, at the Holston Valley Medical Center. Mae was born July 16, 1921, in McDowell County, W.Va. She had been a resident of Kingsport since 1948 and attended the Blountville Church of God. Her husband, Preston Blevins, preceded Mae in death in 1979. Mae is survived by her son, Steve Blevins of Kingsport; two daughters, Patricia Catledge and Kay Salyer, both of Lancaster, SC; two grandsons, Len Salyer III and Preston Catledge, both of Lancaster; two great-grandsons, Len Salyer IV and Logan Catledge, both of Lancaster. BOOHER, BONNIE ETHEL WORLEY Bonnie Ethel Worley Booher, 95, of Grace Healthcare, Abingdon, Va., went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Tuesday, July 10, 2001. She was born in Benhams, Va., April 8, 1906. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse Franklin Worley and Emma Keith Worley; her husband, Robert (Bob) Craig Booher; one son, Bobby Lee Booher; and one grandson, Gregory Booher. She was a member of Fellowship Chapel Church. She was the oldest member of Bell-Walsh Chapter 65 Order of the Eastern Star, Benhams, and has four daughters, one son and a daughter-in-law also members of this chapter. BOYETTE, EVELYN JONES FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. -- Evelyn Jones Boyette passed away Thursday, July 26, 2001, in a Fort Walton Beach hospital. She was a native of West Virginia and had been a resident of Fort Walton Beach for 27 years. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Roy Jones. Survivors include her husband, J.C. Boyette; one stepson, Legrand Boyette, of Fort Washington, Md.; three brothers, Bill Jones of Fort Walton Beach, Bernard Jones of Birmingham, Ala., and James Jones of Bristol, Tenn.; one sister, Mary Jones McClellan of Clearwater, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. BRADLEY, PITZER Jr. CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Pitzer Bradley Jr., 73, died Monday, June 18, 2001, in University Hospital in Cleveland. He was born in Bristol, TN, a son of the late Pitzer and Mary Bradley. He graduated with honors from Slater High School and received a B. S. degree in mathematics and business administration from North Carolina State. Mr. Bradley also received an accounting degree from Fenn College. He was employed with Cleveland Public Schools and the United States Postal Service. In 1965, he was appointed the first black service/customer service representative, between Cleveland and Chicago. Some of his duties included marketing and establishing the ZIP code and express mail programs that are still in use today. He also lectured on proper mailing procedures for Cleveland State University, Cuyahoga Community College and many large corporations. One of his assignments was to research and write a history of the Cleveland Post Office. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and served more than four decades of volunteer service to the Southeast Cleveland neighborhood. Pitts, known as "Mr. Mt. Pleasant," was president of the United Area Citizens Agency and involved with many other civic organizations. He served on the boards of Cleveland NAACP, Urban League, Mount Pleasant Housing and Mount Pleasant Youth Action Council. He served on advisory boards of social service organizations. The City of Cleveland named him "Citizen of the Year" and awarded him with a "Life Time Achievement Award" for leadership and excellence. Mr. Bradley was a Mason and a member of El Hasa Shrine. Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Sarah Woods Bradley; three daughters, Denise Bradley-Robinson of Atlanta, Jeanne Bradley-Allen of Columbus, Ohio, and Marcia Bradley-Williams of Maple Heights, Ohio; a brother, Harry and a sister, Ruby Booker, both of Cleveland; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. BRANUM, NORA BELLE Nora Belle Branum, 60, of 2160 Carolina Ave., Lot 19, Bristol, Tenn., went to Heaven on July 1, 2001, at her home. She was a native of Asheville, NC, and had made her home in Bristol since 1974. She was a daughter of the late Thomas P. and Alma C. Cole Haynes. She was the widow of her first husband, Fred Lee Campbell, and her second husband, Thural Branum. She was a member of East Bristol Church of God. CALDWELL, FORD MONROE Mr. Ford Monroe Caldwell, 86, of 106 Abbie Lane, Bristol, Tenn., died July 30, 2001, at Wellmont-Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born Sept. 3, 1914, in Butler, Tenn. He was the son of the late Archibald and Neva F. Caldwell. Mr. Caldwell attended high school at Crossnore School, Inc., Crossnore, NC. He went to King College on a football scholarship and graduated in 1937. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy. Mr. Caldwell traveled and sold sporting goods for 36 years at Moore-Earhart Co. and later worked at H.P. King Company. He was a longtime member and served as a deacon at First Baptist Church, Bristol, Va. He was also a member of the Order of United Commercial Travelers of America since November of 1938. HENRY, ROBERT LEE Robert Lee Henry Jr., 88, of Bristol, Tenn., died Tuesday, July 24, 2001, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. Born on June 30, 1913, in Knoxville, Mr. Henry received a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Tennessee in 1935. He worked for Knoxville Utilities Board and TVA before World War II. Mr. Henry served as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy during World War II teaching RADAR and LORAN systems to U.S. Navy personnel. After World War II he worked for the FAA servicing RADAR at airports in seven southern states. He moved to Bristol in 1955 to work for Sperry. Later, he taught at Tri-Cities Technical School and in 1978 retired from Raytheon Corporation. Mr. Henry was a lifelong Presbyterian and a member of First Presbyterian Church of Bristol. Until he was unable, he grew beautiful roses and enjoyed gardening. Always a scholar, he bought and learned to use a computer when he was 80. He gave generously to many charities and was a benefactor to King College and the University of Tennessee College of Engineering. He was a wonderful neighbor and especially enjoyed his dining friends at Piccadilly Cafeteria. He was preceded in death by his wife, Velma LeBow Henry, and brother, James W. Henry. Surviving are his niece, Terrill Henry Brigg and husband, Stan, Knoxville; nephew, Robert Karns Henry, Kingsport; sister-in-law, Mrs. James W. HUBBARD, NANCY JANE GOODPASTURE Nancy Jane Goodpasture Hubbard of 12 Long Crescent Road, Bristol, Va., died July 11, at the Wellmont Hospice House after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was 84. She was the eldest daughter of the late Frank and Hazelle Goodpasture Sr. and the widow of Archie Henry Hubbard Jr. She was born in Roanoke on May 27, 1917. She was a lifelong resident of Bristol, Va. After graduating from Virginia High School, she attended Sullins College and RPI, now known as Virginia Commonwealth University, where she studied art. She was married to Mr. Hubbard, March 11, 1941. They lived briefly in Chicago, Ill,, but returned home during World War II as Mr. Hubbard was serving in the Navy. They remained in Bristol after the war and joined the family truck business which was started by her father, Frank Goodpasture Sr. She was a co-owner of Goodpasture Motor Co., Inc., along with her brother, Frank Goodpasture Jr. and her nephew, Frank Goodpasture III, at the time of her death. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Her interests included oil painting, music, gourmet cooking and computer art. She also loved building and remodeling homes. Most of all, she enjoyed focusing her attention on her family and friends. She was a member of the State Street United Methodist church. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Hazelle Hubbard of the home; two sons, Archie Henry Hubbard III of Bristol, Va.; and Dr. Frank Pierce Hubbard Sr. and Frank's wife, Lesley P. Hubbard of Bonita Springs, Fla.; three sisters, Senah G. Buchanan and her husband H.K. Buchanan Jr. of Bristol, Tenn.; Hazelle "Tiny" G. KING, ANNA LAURA Anna Laura King, 98, passed away Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at home in Bristol, Tenn. She was born in Terrell, Texas, in 1902, a daughter of the late John E. and Ada Bass Peyton, and spent her youth in Shreveport, La. She attended Sullins College in 1920 and became a permanent resident of Bristol upon her marriage to George M. King, who preceded her in death in May of 1963. Her commitment to family, church and community was evidenced in her lifelong participation in First Presbyterian Church for 80 years, the Blue Stocking Club for 70 years and as a member of the Bristol Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and Board of Directors, Bristol Public Library Board, PTA's and Women's Literary Club. She served in many leadership roles for over 70 years and has been recognized with various honors and awards for her significant contributions which have had a lasting impact on the community. The most recent honors were as a finalist in the YWCA Tribute to Women in April of 1995 and the J.C. Penny Golden Rule Award in May of 2000. Her life has been an inspiration to all with whom she came in contact. She is survived by daughters, Nancy Jane Parks, widow of C. Erskine Parks, of Bristol, Va., and Laura Ann Warner and husband, John, of Bristol, Tenn.; son, George M. King Jr. and his wife, Peggy, of Bristol, TN; grandchildren, Charles E. ORBACH, MARGARET ADELINE McCLELLAN ASHEVILLE, NC -- Margaret Adeline McClellan Orbach died in Asheville, July 11, 2001, following a lengthy illness. Margaret was born in Bristol, Va. She had worked most of her adult life as a medical technologist until becoming disabled with MS. She persevered in earning a masters in public health and worked as a community volunteer in many capacities, including facilitating an AIDS support group. Shortly after her twins were born, she co-founded the Asheville Area Mothers of Twins Club. One of her last outreach ventures was to host an MS support chat line for Dr. Koop. Even when her own energy was depleted, she was always willing to aid in the service of public health. Surviving are her loving husband, Norris Orbach; three sons, Benjamin, Matthew and Jonathan, all of Asheville; mother, Evelyn Taylor McClellan, Bristol, Tenn.; two brothers, George McClellan, Bristol, Tenn., and Edwin McClellan, Gray, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews. OSBORNE, WALLACE JAMES PINEY FLATS -- Wallace James Osborne, 86, of 615 Pickens Bridge Road went home to be with the Lord Friday, July 20, 2001, at Select Specialty Hospital-Bristol Regional Medical Center, following an extended illness. He was a son of the late Charles James and Lily Hicks Osborne. Mr. Osborne was a native of Bristol, Tenn. He lived a short time in Johnson County, Tenn., but had lived most of his life in Piney Flats. He was a member of Piney Flats Baptist Church. PREVETTE, EDWARD PRINCE BLUEFIELD, Va. -- Mr. Edward Prince Prevette, 55, 619 Quail Dr., died Monday, July 23, 2001, from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. Mr. Prevette was a Washington County, Tennessee, native and the son of the late C. E. and Ruth Talley Prevette. He was a graduate of Science Hill High School in Johnson City and received a B. TAYLOR, WILLIAM LEROY BLUFF CITY -- William Leroy Taylor, 72, of 553 Dry Branch Rd., went to be with the Lord at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. Born on Oct. 13, 1928, in Scott County (Hiltons), Va. a son of the late Ellen Taylor, he had resided in the Bristol area most of his life. Mr. Taylor retired from the Sullivan County School Maintenance Division and had also worked in the heating and air conditioning business in the Tri-Cities. He was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the U.S. Army, where he earned a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. Mr. Taylor served as an active member of the VFW Color Guard and a member of the American Legion. He was of the Baptist faith. YOUNG, HORACE EDWARD "JUNIOR" LEBANON -- Horace Edward (Junior) Young Jr., 76, died Monday, July 23, 2001, in the James H. Quillen Veterans Administration Medical Center in Johnson City. Born in Micaville, NC, a son of the late Horace Edward Young and Jeneva Hall Young, he had lived in Russell County the past 42 years. He was a retired maintenance superintendent for the Pittston Coal Co. A U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, he served in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of the Lebanon Masonic Lodge 251 A. F. & A.M. and the Kazim Shrine Temple in Roanoke. He was also a member of Finney Baptist Church. Mr. Young was an avid outdoorsman, fisherman and a lover of music. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by one brother; and two sisters. Surviving are his wife, Trula Smith Young: one daughter and son-in-law, Betsy Y. Dickenson and Tom Dickenson, Castlewood; one son and daughter-in-law, Horace Edward Young III and Alicia Chafin Young, Lebanon; three granddaughters, Jan D. Osborne and Sarah N. Dickenson, both of Castlewood, and Rachel V. Young, Lebanon; one grandson, Andrew Edward Young, Lebanon; three sisters, Patricia Y. Rotenberry, Kimball, W.Va., Peggy D. Phelps, Mt. Ulla, NC, and Mary Y. McCravey, Burlington, NC; one brother, Michael C. Young, Burlington; also several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel in Lebanon with the Rev. Mike Carter officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery in Bristol, Va. Pallbearers will be John Arrington, Tom Dickenson, Jamie Osborne, Ed Rotenberry, Cliff Phelps and Andy Young. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of your choice. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
