ABLE, DAVID WALLACE “WALLY” David Wallace "Wally" Able, 75, of 156 Valley Pike Road, Bristol, TN, died Saturday, April 24, 1999, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Denton Valley Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Stevens officiating. The committal service and burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery, directed by Oakley-Cook Funeral Home. Mr. Abel was born in Washington County, VA, and moved to Bristol 48 years ago. He retired from Pepsi-Cola after 28 years. He coached baseball at South Holston Little League and Babe Ruth. He was a member of Denton Valley Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Bonnie E. Abel; three sons, Gary Abel of Washington, PA, Phillip Abel of Abingdon, and Randy Abel of Bristol TN; eight sisters, Martha Ketron of Bristol TN, Virginia Hunter of Cincinnati, Louise Schwartz of Jonesborough, Lillian Jones and Phyllis Abel, both of Abingdon, Grace Odum of Bristol VA, Katherine Saul of Winder, GA, and Sue Gibson of Knoxville; three brothers, Jack Abel and Wayne Abel, both of Abingdon, and Bill Abel of Bristol VA; two grandsons; two step-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews. Also, Mr. Abel was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Lester Abel Jr. Other survivors include two grandsons, David Abel of Abingdon and Virginia and Matthew Abel of Washington, PA; and two step-grandsons, Travis and Joseph Hayden of Abingdon. ACKLEY, PAUL F. Jr. Paul F. Ackley Jr., 56, of 330 Godsey Road, Bristol, TN, died Thursday, April 1, 1999, in Wellmont Hospice House. He was a native of New Jersey and moved to Bristol in 1980, after completing a 20-year military career. He attended St. Joseph High School in Camden, NJ, and received his diploma from the Army-Navy Academy in Carlsbad, CA. He attended Bristol College and Tri-City Technical School. He was a retired chief petty officer with the U.S. Navy, and a member of Fleet Reserve Association. Mr. Ackley was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church, and a 4th degree with the Knights of Columbus, Council 6695 of Bristol. He was employed with Sherwin Williams, Electro Mechanical Corporation, and had maintenance contracts for several years at Virginia High, Virginia Junior High, Dillard Paper Company, and St. Anne's Catholic Church and School. BECKNER, MAURIE GEORGE Sr. Maurice George Beckner Sr., 87, of Bristol Virginia, died Tuesday, April 13, 1999, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was a native of Whitesburg, TN, moved to Bristol in 1944, and also resided in Homosassa, FL, for many years. He was retired from Southern Railroad after 35 years of service. He was a member of Master Lodge No. 0244 of Knoxville, E.H. Mr. Burleson was a member and elder of Central Presbyterian Church, and a member of Bristol Host Lions Club, The Elks Lodge, and The Country Club of Bristol. CLARK, HAROLD L. ELIZABETHTON -- Harold L. Clark, 73, died Monday, April 5, 1999, at his home. He was a native of Washington County, VA, and had lived in Michigan for 51 years, where he retired from Chrysler Corporation after 32 years of service. He had been a resident of Elizabethton since 1980. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the VFW Patton-Crosswhite Post No. 6975. Mr. Clark attended Pleasant Beach Baptist Church of Elizabethton. CLAYMAN, J. HOWARD EVANSVILLE, IN -- The Rev. J. Howard Clayman, 85, died Friday, April 2, 1999, at his home. He was a native of Richlands, and pastor of Holston Baptist Church in Bristol Tennessee before moving to Evansville. Prior to becoming a minister, he was employed as a department head for S. E. Massengill Co., was a talented athlete and musician, and part of an evangelistic team as director of music. The Rev. Clayman was Pastor Emeritus of Washington Avenue Baptist Church, where he pastored from 1951-1988. He was a former president of the Baptist Pastor's Conference, and first moderator of the Southwestern Baptist Association. His 48-year radio ministry, "Wonderful Words of Life," began in Bristol Tennessee, and continued in Evansville until 1998. He led a weekly television program for the church for 13 years. He was the widower of Mary Frances O'Neal Clayman. Survivors include two daughters, Betty Schmitt of Evansville, and Joyce Brothers of Newburgh, IN; a son, James Clayman of Hillsboro, MD; two sisters, Opal Bray and Edith Dishner, both of Garden Grove, Calif.; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. In 1959, under the direction of the Bristol Tennessee Board of Education, he organized the first vocational education program in Bristol and Sullivan County. He was named director of the Bristol-Sullivan Technical School in 1973, and retired from Tennessee High School as a vice-principal and director of vocational education. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel in Bristol Tennessee by Dr. Howard Robinson. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery. Mrs. Wright was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area, a housewife and a member of Antioch Baptist Church. She was the widow of Frank McNeal Wright Sr. Surviving are seven sons, Garland Wright, Frank Wright, Jim Wright, Sid Wright, Jack Wright and Wayne Wright, all of Bristol, and Samuel Wright of Deal Island, MD; a sister, Christine Ely of Bristol VA; 16 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren. Also, Mrs. Wright is survived by a brother-in-law, E.W. Ely of Bristol VA. Pallbearers will be grandsons. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Weaver Funeral Home.
