She was a native of Russell County, had lived in the Bristol area for about 40 years and was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church. She was the widow of Charles H. Baker and was a homemaker. BAKER, RACHEL MATNEY Rachel Matney Baker, 99, of 149 Keith Road, Bristol, TN, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, at her home. She was a native of Buchanan County and attended Grundy High. She secured a teaching certificate from Radford Normal Institute, and taught in Buchanan County schools and Mountain Mission School. She worked as a postal clerk in Haysi and was active in the community and Presbyterian Church. She moved to Bristol in 1964 and was an active member of the Meadowview Church and the organizations for handicap people. She was the widow of Ireland Baker. LESLIE, SARA FRANCES DAVIDSON, NC -- Sara Frances Leslie, 89, of 400 Avinger Lane, died Friday, Dec. 4, 1998, at The Pines, Davidson. She was a native of Bristol Tennessee, a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church, Bristol Tennessee, which her mother helped found. She was a graduate of Virginia Intermont College and Westhampton College of the University of Richmond. After graduation, she taught for a brief period before going to the Kingsport Press to become a journeyman printer. When World War II began, she was called to work at the State Department, Washington, DC Her assignment was to attend plenary conferences, beginning at Dunbarton Oaks, Washington, DC, and leading to development of the proposed Charter of the United Nations. She was present at the final meetings and at the signing of the Charter on June 26, 1945 in San Francisco. She was later employed with the Federation of American Societies for experimental biology as Editor of Scientific Journals until her retirement. In 1988, she moved to The Pines, Davidson, and assisted in establishing /{The Pinepost/}, a publication of resident stories, poetry and musings.
