She was a native of Michigan and had lived most of her life in Bristol. She was employed by Alamont Dental Associates. She was a member of Reynolds Memorial United Methodist Church but attended South Bristol United Methodist Church. He was a native of Bristol Virginia, had lived in Meadowview until 1970 when he moved to Brooklyn, NY, and then moved to Abingdon, in 1983. He was a member of the Valley Street Baptist Church. BELEW, NORMENT P. "NORM" Norment P. "Norm" Belew, 81, of Bristol Tennessee, died Monday, Nov. 16, 1998, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was a native and grew up in Johnson City, had lived most of his life in Bristol, and was CEO of Bristol Supply and Equipment Company for 52 years. He was a 2nd Lt. in the U.S. Army and served as a pilot in World War II. He was a member of State Street United Methodist Church and was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth B. Belew. BOYD, CONLEY LAFAYETTE Conley Lafayette Boyd, 86, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998. He was a life-long resident of Sullivan County and retired from Bristol Door and Lumber Company with 47 years of service. He was a member of Riverbend Baptist Church where he served as deacon and was a former music director. He was an avid hunter and trainer of bird dogs. CLENDENEN, WILLIAM "BILL" William "Bill" Clendenen, 80, of 11693 Wallace Pike, Bristol, VA, died Thursday, Nov. 5, 1998, in NHC Health Care of Bristol. He was a lifelong resident of Washington County, attended King College and received a bachelor of science degree and a master's degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. DOWELL, WILLIAM EUGENE "SPEEDY" William Eugene "Speedy" Dowell, 67, of 330 Godsey Road, Bristol, TN, died Friday, Oct. 30, 1998, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area, a retired agent with Home Beneficial Life Insurance Company, a former employee of Monroe Calculating Company and Bristol Tennessee Parks and Recreation Department. He was superintendent of Public Works, in Bristol Tennessee. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, a member of Anderson Street United Methodist Church, where he served on the administrative board, was a member of the Hugh Pyle Sunday School Class and a member of the Men's Club of the church. He was a coach-manager with Western Little League, coached football at Anderson Elementary and was an umpire for District I. EDMONDS, FAYE BROYHILL Faye Broyhill Edmonds, 85, of Bristol Tennessee, died Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998, in Winston-Salem, NC. She was a native of Lenoir, NC, had been a resident of Bristol for 59 years and was a graduate of Lenoir Rhyne College, in Hickory, NC/ She was the widow of R.J. Edmonds. She served as president of Edmonds Brothers Supply Company and had been active in the business until recently. She was a member of the Board of Directors of the Bristol Heart Association, had served as a member of the board of the YWCA and of the Health and Educational Facilities Board for Bristol, Tennessee. GARRETT, M. CURWOOD M. Curwood Garrett, of 217 Sunnybrook Drive, Bristol, TN, died Saturday, Nov. 21, 1998 in VA Medical Center. He was a native of Monterey, Tenn., and had lived in Bristol since 1959. He was a member of the Virginia Avenue United Methodist Church, a graduate of Tennessee Tech, Cookeville, where during his senior year, he was named by the faculty to Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities. He worked for several newspapers including editor of /{The Clinton Courier/}, {The Shelbyville Times/}, {The Rutherford Courier/}, Murfreesboro and /{The Knoxville Journal/}. He joined the staff of Bristol Newspapers in April of 1959 and retired after 21 years of service. He served four years in the U.S. Army during World War II as a lieutenant. SPAHR, SIDNEY LOUIS URBANA, Ill. -- Dr. Sidney Louis Spahr, 63, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 1998 at the Carle Arbours, Savoy, IL. He was a native of Washington County and a resident of Urbana for the past 34 years. He attended Virginia High School and was a 1954 graduate of Stuart High School, Stuart, VA. He was a professor at the University of Illinois and received his bachelor's degree from Virginia Poly Technic Institute in 1958. He earned his master's in 1960 and doctorate in 1964 from Pennsylvania State University. In 1964, Dr. Spahr joined the Department of Dairy Science at the University of Illinois, Urbana, and completed 34 years of dedicated service to the dairy industry of Illinois. He served two years, 1970 to 1972, at the National Academy of Science, Washington, DC, authored two textbooks, seven book chapters, and over 50 technical journal articles. He received the prestigious MSD AGVET National Dairy Management Award, in 1987, from the College of ACES. He lectured in the United States, Netherlands, Israel, Japan, Kenya, Canada, Russia, Ireland, Germany, England and Denmark. His research accomplishments included contributions to electronic animal identification, dairy automation, artificial intelligence, electronic mastitis detection, electronic estrus detection and animal waste management.
