ADAMS, SIDNEY G. Sidney G. Adams, 86, of 42 Green Valley Road, Bristol, VA, died Wednesday, April 15, 1998, in Bristol Regional Medical Center from injuries sustained in a March 15, 1998, airplane accident. He was a former resident of Norton, a U.S. Army veteran and was retired from Clinchfield Coal Corporation. He was an active member of the Virginia Highlands Pilots Association and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. He was a member of Midway Baptist Church. BOWLES, EDWARD LANCING Sr. Rocky Gap, VA Mr. Edward Lancing Bowles, Sr., 80, of Route 1, Box 66, Rocky Gap, died Thursday, April 2, 1998 in a Bluefield hospital. Born January 3, 1918 in Wytheville, VA, he was the son of the late Charles Bowles and Ella Lefler Bowles. Prior to his retirement he worked for Betsy Ross Bakery for 30 years as a facility technician. He was a member of the Dry Fork Baptist Church in Rocky Gap and was a resident of Rocky Gap for 45 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Mrs. Dorcas Burcham Bowles of the home; two sons, E.L. CALDWELL, ALMA LEE MARTIN Mrs. Alma Lee "Diddie" Martin Caldwell, 85, of Bristol TN, died Sunday, April 19, 1998, in Methodist Medical Center, in Oak Ridge, TN. She had lived in Bristol all her life, growing up at the First Baptist Church, then changing her membership to the First Presbyterian Church when she married. She was a communion chairperson for 61 years. She served as a deacon and was serving as an elder for the church at the time of her death. She was a member of the Fort Chiswell Chapter of the DAR and PEO and was a founding member of the Virginia Parish Study Club. CROCKETT, CLAUDE H. Sr. Claude H. Crockett Sr., 88, died Tuesday, April 28, 1998. He was a lifelong resident of Bristol and a graduate of Virginia High School where he was quarterback for the football team, playing with Beattie Feathers and Gene McEver. He was co-founder of the /{Little Virginian/} school newspaper, which is still published today. He attended Emory & Henry College on athletic and journalism scholarships and graduated in 1934 with a bachelor's degree in English. He subsequently entered the postal service, serving as superintendent of mail, assistant postmaster and regional financial officer, prior to his retirement in 1975. He was active in civic and church affairs having served as a member and chairman of the Bristol Virginia School Board. He was instrumental in the planning, construction and naming of Washington-Lee School. He also served for a number of years on the Bristol Virginia Utilities Board. He was a longtime member of the Bristol Rotary Club with many years of perfect attendance and was a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow. He was also active in First Baptist Church, having served as a member of the Men's Bible Class, a Sunday school teacher, chairman of the Board of Deacons, chairman of the Pastor Search Committee and church clerk. Survivors include his wife, Irene Counts Crockett; two sons, Richard David Crockett Sr. and Claude H. "Stooky" Crockett Jr., M .D., both of Bristol; six grandchildren, Lori C. HARKINS, CHARLES E. MARION -- Charles E. Harkins, 70, died Saturday, April 18, 1998 in Smyth County Community Hospital. He was a native of Bristol Tennessee, attended the Bristol School systems and graduated from Tennessee High School. Following a stint in the Navy, he returned to Bristol, where he also received a diploma from Virginia High School. He received a bachelor's degree from Emory & Henry College and the University of Virginia. A well-known educator, friend and mentor to countless students, he began a long, faithful career in education as teacher and basketball coach in Appalachia. He moved to Marion in 1957, where he taught government and was head coach for the boy's basketball and golf teams. He was athletic director at Marion Senior High School and, in 1976, became supervisor of secondary education for the Smyth County School System. After retiring in July, 1989, he remained active as a consultant to the Smyth County School System and was an organizer of Youth Government Day at Marion Senior High School. His contributions to athletics across the state were numerous. In 1958, he founded the Pepsi Cola All- Stars and served as its player-coach from 1958 to 1965, served as a Virginia High School football official for 35 years and was a director of the Southwest Virginia Officials Association. He received numerous honors for his devotion to athletics, was inducted into the Emory & Henry Hall of Fame and the Virginia High School League Hall of Fame. He was a member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church where he taught Sunday School, a member of the Kiwanis Club, past president and secretary of Holston Hills Country Club, served on the Marion Planning Commission, was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and was on the board at VEA. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mildred Grainger Harkins. PATY, JOHN C. Jr. John C. Paty Jr., of Bristol Tennessee, died Sunday, April 12, 1998, during a visit to Colorado. He was Chairman of the Board of Paty Lumber Company. He was a native of Bell Buckle, Tenn., moved to Elizabethton with his family in 1927, and graduated from the Baylor School of Chattanooga and the University of North Carolina with a bachelor's degree in economics. While in North Carolina, he was a cadet in the Naval ROTC unit and received a commission as an officer with the U.S. Navy in 1941. During World War II, he served on the U.S.S. Revenge AM 110 Fleet Mine sweeper, which was the first Allied Warship to enter Tokyo Bay. July 1, 1997, marked the 50th anniversary of Mr. Paty's full-time service with Paty Lumber Company, which was founded by his father in 1932. He began working at Paty, in Elizabethton, in 1947, and, shortly thereafter, moved to Bristol, where he led the company's growth during its early years. He served as chief executive officer from 1975 until 1992 and was responsible for establishing the Company's corporate facility in Piney Flats. Mr. Paty had been associated with the lumber and building materials industry most of his life, with Paty Lumber Company operating yards in Bristol, Duffield, Elizabethton, Greeneville, Johnson City, Kingsport and Morristown, Big John's Closeouts Stores in Bristol, Elizabethton and Johnson City and the component manufacturing and distribution center in Piney Flats. He had served for several years on the Board of Directors of the Tennessee Building Materials Association and had been active in the Virginia Building Materials Association. As a young boy, he belonged to the Boy Scouts in Elizabethton. Through the years he had served as a volunteer on the unit and district levels and as president of the Sequoyah Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Mr. Paty provided personal support to the Sequoyah Council over the past five decades and in December, 1997, the Silver Eagle Award of the Sequoyah Council was bestowed upon him for his efforts. For his further service to scouting and his community, he received the Silver Beaver Award, the 1990 Eagles of the Sequoyah Council dedicated their class to him, and, in 1993, he was honored by Sequoyah Council with the James E. West Fellowship Award. He was a former member of the Board of Directors of Dominion Bank of Bristol and was a member of the executive committee of the board for many years. He served as president of Sanford, Florida-based Pen Paints, Inc. Mr. Paty was named 1997 Executive of the Year by the Tri-Cities Chapter of Professional Secretaries International and was named a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow in 1989. In 1992, he was inducted into the Bristol Regional Medical Center Foundation Citizens Hall of Fame. He had previously served on the Board of Directors of Bristol Memorial Hospital. Outside his business, he was involved in hunting, fishing and outdoor activities, in addition to establishing himself as a national skeet and trap champion. He actively participated with Ducks Unlimited, Inc., Kettlefoot Rod and Gun Club and the National Rifle Association. He was a member of the State Street United Methodist Church, where he served as a trustee and a member of the administrative board. WHITTEMORE, ROBERT CHARLES KINGSPORT -- Robert Charles "R.C." Whittemore, 72, died Wednesday, April 22, 1998, in the Veterans Administration Hospital, Johnson City, TN. He was of the Primitive Baptist faith and was wounded while serving as a Staff Sgt. during World War II. WILES, K. G. BLUFF CITY -- K.G." Ikey" Wiles Sr., 81, of 293 Old Jonesboro Road, died Friday, April 3, 1998, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was a native of Bluff City, was employed over 40 years as a salesman in the electrical wholesale business, and was employed first with Kingsport Electric and later with All-Phase Electric. He attended Bluff City United Methodist Church and was a member of the American Legion and Bristol VFW Post 6975.
