I don’t know for sure but I think that William Pile’s father George Phillip Pile is buried at the Pyle cemetery. He had a blacksmith shop very close to the cemetery and in tracing my family tree, I have found that he died at Chestnut Ridge in 1840. There are two graves at the area where all of the Pile family members are buried. The head stones are made of limestone and the names have flaked off over the years.

Pyle Cemetery — 14 Comments

  1. The Lawson buried here at Pyle Cemetery is Vinnie Lawson, 1884-1944. She was the daughter of Joel and Martha McMurray, who are also buried in this cemetery. She was the mother of Oscar James Bunn, also buried here. His birth and death years here are incorrect. They should read 1905-1937. Joel McMurray is my great-great grandfather.

  2. Susan C Rayel listed in this cemetery died in Aug 1919….its not on the headstone but is on the death certificate. Her parents were Sanford Bridwell Sr. d. 1871 and Mary Titsworth d. abt 1839.

  3. To respond to the note about William Pile’s father being George Phillip Pile — William O’Brien Pile was born in 1825, but he was not the son of George Phillip Pile and his wife Elizabeth Pendleton O’Brien. I’ve spent the past few weeks tracing the Piles back to Pennsylvania. William O’Brien Pile born in 1825 was actually the grandson of George Phillip Pile and Elizabeth O’Brien and there’s another O’Brien Pile in between. William O’Brien Pile’s father was named O’Brien Pile (not sure if his first name was William or not) and he was born about 1806 in Union, Berks County, Pennsylvania. I believe he was the first child of George Phillip and Elizabeth. This O’Brien Pile began going under the name “Bryant Pile” and had three wives, the first Elizabeth (don’t know her maiden name), born 1804, died before 1855, the second Mary J. Vaughn, the third Elizabeth Adeline Booher.

My ancestor, John Pile, was the youngest child of George Phillip and Elizabeth O’Brien Pile, and he was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Elizabeth O’Brien’s father was Brian O’Brien, born 1745 in Ireland, and her mother was Anna Maria (Mary Ann) Thomas, born 1750 in Philadelphia.

As it turns out, the Piles were German. George Phillip Pile and Elizabeth B’Brien’s marriage record lists him as “Georg Phillip Pfeil” and his father, who went by Daniel Pile, was the immigrant from Germany, born in 1727 in Hatzfeld, Hesse, Germany. Until he changed his name to Daniel Pile, his name was Johannes Daniel Pfeil. His wife, Elisabeth (later Elizabeth) Becker, was born in Germany in 1734. They were married in 1766 in Berks County as he emigrated before she did.

Our Pile family thought we were English, but I think I’ve got the evidence that we’re German/Irish…

To make a long story short, we know that George Phillip Pile and his wife Elizabeth O’Brien died at Chestnut Ridge, but she died after 1840 and George died before, since Elizabeth is head of household in the 1840 census. So while they could well be buried at the Pyle Cemetery and be the two cracked unreadable stones, those stones could also be William O’Brien Pile’s parents, O’Brien (Bryant) and Elizabeth Pile. At present I have not found their death records or burial location.

    Best,

Jim Jones (grandson of Margaret Augusta (Gussie) Pyle, great-grandson of Joseph Alexander Pile, great-great-grandson of John Pile and Elizabeth Cawood.

    • I was WRONG about this — William O’Brien Pile was the son of George Phillip Pile and Elizabeth Pendleton O’Brien. The youngest child, in fact.

Their oldest surviving son O’Brien Pile (later Bryant) died in 1875 and we still don’t know where he is buried, but his first wife Elizabeth Braden died in 1855 and would have been a good candidate for burial at the Pyle Cemetery as there are several of the old German-style gravestones in the Pile area that are completely unreadable.

Eddie Pyle and I believe with near certainty that George Phillip and Elizabeth O’Brien Pile are buried at the Pyle Cemetery and the stones are partially readable. We are surprised they were not noted in the Wexler walkthrough of the cemetery which was in the 1970s we were told, some 40 years back. But they are not in there. Between George Phillip and Elizabeth there is a smaller stone with the name “Matilda” readable on it. We don’t know who that is but it is likely a Pile.

See the entries on Find-a-Grave for more details and Eddie’s pictures.

    Mary B Hurst B-1850 D-1921
They may have been buried without a marker. Can you help me verify.
    Thanks

  6. I have historic records that place Daniel Hurst ( died 1888) and Mary Hurst (1922) were buried in Pyle Cemetery but there were no head stones placed. Can you help me?
    Don Hurst

  7. Looking for the original entry road for the Pyle Cemetery. We know Magistrate Dickson put in a quarter mile road from the “Lee Highway” in May of 1933. Trying to find if this road came from the east or from the west, possibly Trinity Lane..
Also, was this the original entry?
    Thank You
    DiscoverKingsport.com

    • Tim,
I believe that Trinity Lane was placed to access The Pile Cemetery. Here is a link for a 1935 Indian Spring Quadrangle map that clearly shows the road in place. Prior to that,a road from the old Mountian View Methodist church to the Cemetery was the only way in. https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/img4/ht_icons/Browse/TN/TN_Indian%20Springs_147780_1935_24000.jpg
The house shown just east of the Pile Cemetery is the original Pyle homestead. The Neil Moody family moved into the Pyle homestead in the winter of 1926. Mr Moody was the foreman for the Preston farm at that time. Hope this helps.

      • Is there any way to get the location for a gravesite from a 1938 burial? I’d really like to have at least a brass marker set.

  8. Thanks Everyone for not forgetting this important historical cemetery. My grandparents are buried there.Floyd and Pearl Quillen

  9. My great grandfather‘S D’eath certificate shows he is buried here. John Fisher Patton is Oman unmarked grave. I cannot figure out why he was buried here as there are no other family members and no other Pattons in this cemetery. Any information would be appreciated. He was married to Sally Thompson Patton.
