HomeCemeteriesPaperville Cemetery

Paperville, one of the oldest communities in Tennessee, is located on the Old Jonesboro Road, southeast of Bristol. The cemetery is located on Church Circle, near the Paperville United Methodist Church. The Old Jonesboro Road was the main stage coach line from Jonesborough, passing through Paperville, on to Abingdon, Roanoke and other northern Virginia cities. Reading by Earl Wayne Wills and his son Andy Wills. Annotated by S. Kathryn Bowling McKown. Photographed July 2013 by Sharon Steele-Smith.

Notes

The comment after William B. Campbell, 5-18-1817 to 12-25-1886 states that his wife’s name was Margaret but that he appears with an Esther on the 1850-1870 census. The Sullivan Co. enumeration in 1860 (with wife Esther) is not the same William. William B. Campbell who is buried in the Paperville Cemetery was enumerated in Washington Co., Virginia in 1860, 1870, etc. The specifics from 1860 are as follows:

  Washington Co. VA, Western District,
Post Office Goodson, (original page 353)
added script page #717, dwelling 2589, family 2527,
  Ancestry.com image 353 of 361

  Wm B. Campbell, 43
  Margaret 37
  Samuel 16
  Ann 14
  David 11
  Sarah 10
  William 7
  John 4
  Jacob 1

On the same page is William’s first cousin, John Ryburn. John’s land was on the Paperville Rd, partly in Washington Co. VA and partly in Sullivan Co., VA. (per Washington Co. deeds). Hence William Campbell was also living very close to the state line but was enumerated in Virginia.

You’ll notice that several of William’s children (Ann, John, William) who are buried in the Paperville Cemetery are listed on the 1860 census with him and are of the appropriate ages. I did not know about the child who was apparently born and died in 1865 and am very appreciative of that information. There is also a James Campbell listed in the group who is annotated as being a son of William and Esther. He might be a son of William and Margaret since William had a brother named James but I do not know for sure. The William and Esther Campbell in Sullivan County on the 1860 census (Civil District #2, original page #46, Ancestry.com 11 of 15) are enumerated with a son James but I doubt that this is him in the cemetery since the William who is buried there is not the one on the Sullivan Co. enumeration

  2. Concerning the question of the dates on Sarah BOOHER : I have my great grandfather David Booher’s family bible The dates for Sarah are correct.

    • David, thanks for your comment. Is there any information in your Bible regarding Mary “Polly” Booher (1824-1912), married 1842 to Henry Weaver (1821-1893)? They are buried near Elizabethton in the Weaver-Williams Cemetery. Thanks so very much.

  3. I was very sad to not find my Thomas ancestors headstones at the Paperville cemetery and many unreadable stones, broken or toppled stones. I moved to Bristol from Texas in 2020 and have been here a year and would really like to assist with this cemetery. If anyone knows of an association or caretaker, I would like to be in touch. Find a grave does have a photo of Jacob Thomas, wife Louisa Thomas, and son John Thomas being buried there. They are not listed on the sign. The photo is very old, from 1918. I am from the line of a younger son, Isaac Thomas who married Rebecca Barb, whose parents are buried at zion Lutheran Church cemetery now Rock Hill Baptist bear the Pinnacle off Johnson Chapel rd.

    • I am a Thomas and I would be happy to help with dates and such. My Grandfather was William David Thomas he had a brother named Isaac. Seems like there were several Jacobs, George, William and a couple of Slaters.
