RICHARDS, FRANK B., 86, of Bluff City, TN passed away Saturday, February 14, 2009, at Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Sullivan County, he was a son of the late Samuel Joseph and Lillie Belle Lyons Richards. Mr. Richards owned and operated Richards Service Station for a number of years. He was a member of Chinquapin Grove Baptist Church. His hobby was restoring old cars. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Clara Glover, and a brother, Henry Richards. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Carmen “Peggy” Jenkins Richards, and two sons and daughters-in-law, Frank Edward and Cathy Richards and Jimmy A. and Pam Richards, all of Bluff City. Six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services for Mr. Richards will be conducted at 7 p.m. Monday, February 16, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Jamie Ferguson, the Rev. David Tydings, the Rev. Scott Greene and the Rev. Elbert Nichols officiating. Music will be provided by David and Mia Richards. Graveside services and interment will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, February 17, in the Chinquapin Grove Cemetery. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the cemetery at 9:50 a.m. Tuesday, will be Frank Richards, Jimmy Richards, David Richards, Andy Richards, Dustin Richards, Brandon Richards, Timmy Smith and Verl Kaylor Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be Linville Sams, Robert Lyons, Harmon Glover, William Graybeal, Joe Vance and Joe Lyons. BARNES, TIMOTHY SCOTT “BUBBA” BLUFF CITY, Tenn. — Television producer and videographer Timothy Scott “Bubba” Barnes, whose career in motorsports spanned thirty years, passed away on Friday, March 21, 2008, after battling cancer since 2007. He was forty-eight years old. A longtime racing enthusiast, Barnes began his television career as a news cameraman with WCYB-TV in his hometown of Bristol, Tenn., and became a cameraman for ESPN’s drag racing coverage in 1985. He became one of the original employees of Masters Entertainment Group in Bristol and went on to produce and direct MEG television shows for a variety of networks including ESPN, ESPN2 and SPEED Channel. Barnes was responsible for all facets of production of MEG’s weekly “Inside Drag Racing” series which covered hundreds of events from dozens of racing associations. He also produced the “Street Rodder” weekly series for ESPN and was the chief videographer for “NHRA Heat” and dozens of other shows. As chief videographer for MEG for the past decade, Barnes attended over one hundred events per season and covered a wide range of motorsports. He maintained relationships with thousand of individuals throughout the racing world including drivers, crew chiefs, constructors and officials throughout his career. Barnes actively participated in sprint car racing and drag racing and was also a capable builder of street rods and Harley-Davidson motorcycles. His knowledge of all aspects of hot rodding was employed in his television productions and helped garner major attention of MEG television shows resulting in several industry awards. Easily identifiable, “Bubba” Barnes enjoyed the friendship of many of racing’s biggest stars. “There was nobody who didn’t like Bubba,” said MEF President Ted Jones, “and everybody respected his opinion. He was an integral member of our company and, like the fans and racers who knew him, we will miss him tremendously.” A native of Richlands, Va., he was the son of the late Fred and Ruth McGlothin Barnes. He was a former member of the Sullivan County Planning Commission and was a member of the National Harley Group. Mr. Barnes was a member of Poplar Ridge Christian Church. Survivors include his wife, Kimberly L. Barnes, of the home; a daughter, Megan Lee Barnes, of the home; a son, Brandon S. Barnes, U.S. Air Force, Turkey; a brother, William (Sandy) Marrs and his wife Peggy, Ocala, Fla. and a sister-in-law, Lisa A. Simpson and her husband Ricky, Bluff City, Tenn. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral service for Timothy Scott “Bubba” Barnes will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Sunday, March 23, 2008 in the Sunrise Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Services, Johnson City, Tenn. with Mr. Roland Whittemore and Mr. Brad Perry, ministers, officiating. BULLOCK, CHARLES E. BLUFF CITY – Charles E. “Charlie” Bullock, 72, formerly of 549 Bunker Hill Road, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, in Bristol Nursing Home. He was born in Sullivan County, a son of the late Tom and Bertha Shepherd Bullock. He was a member of Bunker Hill Christian Church and a retired carpenter. He was the widower of Jean Bullock. Surviving are four daughters, Lora Kistner of Bristol VA, Susie Perry and Carol Deloach, both of Bluff City, and Janie Glover of Thomasville, NC; a brother, James Clyde “Andy” Bullock of Bluff City; three sisters, Joyce Hardin of Elizabethton, Evelyn Fox and Peggy Scalf, both of Bluff City; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. FORD, PAT BRISTOL, Tenn. – Pat Ford, age 76, went to be with the Lord Thursday, Feb. 15, 2007, at her home. She was born April 18, 1930, and was a daughter of the late Robert Lee Bowman and Susie Jones Bowman. She was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area and was a retired employee of Kroger, with 17 years of service. She was a member of the Steele Creek Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Lee Ford. Survivors include daughter, Barbara Hinkle and husband Michael, Blountville; sons, Ralph Nolan Ford and wife Janie, Walt Ford and wife Anita and Allen Ford and Wendy Pfeifer, all of Bristol Virginia; sisters, Annie Pendergrass, Bristol Tennessee, and Lara Ellen Shaver, Bluff City; brother, Walter Thomas Bowman and wife Pauline, Blountville; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. HARKLEROAD, ROBERT CURETON “BOBBY” BRISTOL, Tenn. – Robert Cureton “Bobby” Harkleroad, 80, died on Friday, Nov. 24, 2006, at his home. He was born on Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1926 in Bristol Tennessee to the late Frank W. and Annette Johnson Harkleroad. He was a lifelong member of Anderson Street United Methodist Church where he assisted as a volunteer helper in Miss Maude’s kindergarten class. Many will miss his daily friendly presence at Charlie Brown’s, Uncle Sam’s Loan Office and the Burger Bar. Survivors include his sister, Frances Harkleroad Trammell; his niece, Terri Trammell Block and her husband Chris and their sons, John Christian Block III and Patrick Trammell Block. The family will receive friends from 1 until 1:50 Monday afternoon, Nov. 27, 2006, at Anderson Street United Methodist Church. The funeral service will follow at 2 o’clock, with the Rev. She was born in Scott County, Va. and lived most of her life in Kingsport. She was of the Baptist faith. Mrs. Poff loved flowers, visiting friends, and family. She enjoyed her family very much. SMALLWOOD, MARY E. From the Kingsport Times (Kingsport TN) 17 Aug 1920. Mrs. Mary E. Smallwood, wife of Theophilus Smallwood, deceased, died at her home at 9 o’clock Friday morning. She was 64 years old at the time of her death. Funeral services were conducted from the home at 3 o’clock Sunday afternoon by her pastor, Rev. E. O. Woodyard, assisted by Rev. W. S. Hendricks, pastor of the Methodist Church South. Following the services at the home the body of Mrs. Smallwood was interred in the Bachman cemetery by the side of the husband and those of her children who had preceded her to the grave. Mrs. Smallwood is survived by four sons, four daughters, two sisters and twenty-two grandchildren. She was a woman of sterling character and lovable disposition and had a host of friends in and about Kingsport to mourn her loss. Those officiating as pallbearers at the funeral were W. C. Marsh, Victor Patton, George Steffey, Guy Devault, John Thomas Roller and Ben Bardill. HITCHCOCK, GLENNA BLUFF CITY, Tenn. – Glenna Hitchcock, 94, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009, at Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Sullivan County, she was a daughter of the late Alfred and Mollie Woods Sams. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Bluff City. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Hitchcock, and nine brothers and sisters. Survivors include three sons, Arthur Buddy Carrier, Edmund Carrier and Melvin K. Carrier, all of Bluff City; three sisters, Mona Lillie, Nina Effinger and Ann Maines, all of Bristol Tennessee; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009, at Tetrick Funeral Home, Bluff City Chapel, with Mr. Derek Cornett, minister, officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday prior to the service in the chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home or other times at the home of her son, Edmund Carrier. Mrs. Edna Coffey Smith of Ocala, Fla., died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2008. She was born in Three Springs, Va., Dec. 14, 1919. She was the daughter of Beeler E. Coffey and Elizabeth Cross Coffey of Bristol, Tennessee. Mrs. Smith had been a resident of Ocala since 1946. Survivors include one son, Steve Smith; and a daughter, April Smith Tooker, both of Ocala, Fla.; and several grandchildren; nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Smith; her beloved sisters, Mrs. Edwin (Edith) Brookshire of Boone, N.C.; Mrs. Eugene (Ina) McDade of Lenoir, N.C.; Mrs. Lewis (Esther) Phipps of Bristol, Va.; Mrs. Roy L. (Lorena) Bass of Atlanta, Ga.; Mrs. Edgar G. (Jean) Smith of Bristol, Va.; an infant sister, Leona Coffey, of Bristol, Va.; and one brother, Beeler T. “June” Coffey, Jr. of Zionville, N.C. Joan Clark Blankenship, 1346 E. Sevier St., Kingsport, died Sunday (Dec. 28, 1997) at Hillside Manor after an extended illness.
She was born in Kingsport, where she had resided her entire life. Mrs. Blankenship was a past employee of Skoby’s Restaurant.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Clara Clark; and a brother, Bill W. Clark. Surviving are a daughter, Kimberly Delancey, Nashville; a son, Mitchell Blankenship, Dryden, Va.; aunts, Wilma Lovell, Annie Jones and Roxie Clark, all of Kingsport and Lillie Jackson, Jonesborough; a sister-in-law, Hazel Clark; a niece, Carolyn Sandige; and three nephews, Anthony Jack Clark, Steven W. Helen Crawford, 69, 881 Big Ridge Road, Kingsport, died at 5 a.m. Thursday (Oct. 22, 1998) at Wexford House after an extended illness. Born in Hawkins County, she had been a resident of Sullivan County most of her life. She was a homemaker and the daughter of the late John Henry and Ida Bell Arnold Crawford. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Wesley Crawford Jr. Surviving are her daughter, Diane Crawford, Kingsport; two sons and daughters-in-law, Leonard and Linda Crawford, Kingsport, and Randy (Moe) and Ruth Crawford, Kingsport; six grandchildren, Christy Meade, Andy Crawford, Angela Hobbs, Jennifer Smith, Carla Kennedy and Tyler Kennedy; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Jerry (Carolyn) Laningham, Church Hill; and several nieces and nephews. Charles (Pete) Foulk, 79, 3315 Cedar Avenue, Kingsport, went home to be with the Lord at 8 a.m. Saturday (Jan. 10, 1998) following a brief period of poor health. Born in Kingsport, he had lived in the area most of his life. He was a veteran of World War II, where he received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart, having served in the U.S. Army. He retired from Boeing Aircraft Corp., where he was a parts foreman. He was a member of DAV Kingsport Chapter No. 38. He was a member of Depew’s Chapel Methodist Church. He was a loving husband and friend. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Carrie Faulk; a son, Dewayne Foulk; three brothers, Maynard, Hiram and Herschel Faulk. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mickey Foulk, of the home; a son, Wendell Foulk, of Kingsport; two godchildren, Lorie Hubbard and Andy Eidson, both of Kingsport; and a sister, Ohlene Pendleton, of Blountville. Calling hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport. Services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Depew’s Chapel Methodist Church with the Rev. James C. FALL BRANCH – Today, Friday, March 1, 2002, William “Will” Charles Goodman was called to come home and be with the Lord. Will served in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of Desert Storm. Once discharged, he became an active member of the U.S. National Guard, Gate City Branch. Will worked as an electrician for Advent Electric before becoming disabled in July 2000. Will was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called Mesothelioma. He fought a most courageous battle with cancer and beat the odds many times, but the Lord had Will’s home in heaven ready for him to come. At this time we must not grieve, but be thankful that Will knew the Lord and had a home waiting for him where he will no longer have the pain and suffering caused from this horrible disease called cancer. Will was a Christian man who touched many lives during his battle with cancer, and we must praise God that he had the chance to touch so many lives and bring glory to his name. Will leaves behind many friends and family that will miss him dearly. He was well loved and cared for by his wife of eight years, Jeannie Short Goodman and one daughter, Hannah Brooke Goodman. Both Jeannie and Hannah fought the battle right beside Will and will have a struggle putting their lives back together after this long term fight. Friends and family would like to ask that you continue to remember them in your daily prayers as they begin a new battle of starting over. Will was a very active member of Springdale Baptist Church and his wishes were to have donations sent to either the Will Goodman Fund to be used for Hannah or Springdale Baptist Church building fund. KINGSPORT – Pauline Crawford Lawley, 74, passed away Tuesday, (Aug. 27, 2002) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center after a brief battle with cancer.  She was a loving wife, sister and aunt. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Columbus and Goldie Marcum Crawford; and three brothers, Jim, Cotton and Tommy Crawford. Surviving are her husband, Clint Lawley, of the home; three sisters, Lochiel Adams, Jessie Adams and Myrtle Lee Gulley, all of Kingsport; one brother, John Crawford, Kingsport; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Danny Moody. KINGSPORT — Eileen Lockwood, 69, of 1163 Moreland Drive, passed away Saturday morning (April 29, 2000) at Holston Valley Medical Center following an extended illness. She was born in Sullivan County and had resided in Chicago, Ill. for several years prior to returning to Kingsport in 1980. She was of the Baptist faith. Mrs. Lockwood was preceded in death by her parents, Dana and Corinthia Short; her husband, John Lockwood; infant brother, L.B. Short; twin brothers, Fred and Frank Short; and one half-brother, Buddy Short.
Surviving are a twin sister, Irene Murph, Kingsport; a half-sister, Patty Baird, Ohio; a half-brother, Johnny Short, Kingsport; two nieces; two nephews; five great-nieces; and three great-nephews. Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, downtown. Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Carl Darnell and the Rev. Ron Cassidy officiating. The body will be cremated per Mrs. Lockwood’s wishes.

 

Mrs. Cora Easley Ratliff, 63, wife of James Ratliff, died at the Holston Valley Community Hospital Wednesday at 11 p.m.  She was a resident of 2505 Bristol Highway and was born and reared in Sullivan County. She is survived by her husband; three daughters, Mrs. Victor Beck, Mrs. Cora Lee Allen and Miss Clara Ratliff, all of Kingsport; three sons, Claude Ratliff, Paul Ratliff and Lawrence Ratliff, all of Kingsport; three sisters, Mrs. T. B. Harris of Erwin, Mrs. Nadine Easley and Mrs. Thelma Mellons of Kingsport; two brothers, Davis Easley of Kingsport and Chester Easley of Bristol and six grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Depew’s Chapel with the Rev. J. C. Blalock and the Rev. Fayette Hood in charge.  Burial will be in the nearby church cemetery.  Short services will be held at the home before going to the church. Pallbearers will be friends.  The body will be removed from the Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home to the home early Saturday morning.

 

KINGSPORT – Sabrina A. (Breena) Reed, 41, of 4171 Ridge Rd., went to be with the Lord in heaven at 11:45 a.m. Sunday (Oct. 20, 2002) at her home. She was born Jan. 26, 1961 in Kingsport. Sabrina was employed by A&L Industries for the past 15 years and was a supervisor. She was of the Baptist faith and was an avid U.T. fan. Sabrina was an angel on earth to all who knew her and now is an angel in heaven. She was preceded in death by her parents, James (Reno) and Mary A. Reed. Surviving are her extremely loving and devoted sisters, Mrs. Lonnie (Sheila) Watts, Patty Reed, Kingsport, Mrs. Jeff (Sharon) Mann, Church Hill, Lisa Reed Hale, Kingsport, Mrs. David (Michelle) Duncan, Church Hill, and Mrs. Brian (Misty) Cox, Kingsport; and one very special brother, Mark R. (Porky) Reed, Kingsport; two very special cousins, Patricia (Trish) Ward and Becky Wolfe and aunt Patsy Wolfe; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly; very special friends, Scottie Jean Shipley, Arnold Wayne Shipley, and the love of her life, Michael Shipley. Each and everyone of the abovementioned look forward to meeting Sabrina in heaven over on that beautiful shore, and until then she will forever be in our hearts. Calling hours are from 6 to 9 Tuesday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, downtown, and anytime at the home, 4171 Ridge Rd. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Lawrence E. Wolfe officiating. Burial will be in Depew’s Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. KINGSPORT – Mark Franklin Waddey, 41, died at 2 p.m. Sunday (July 21, 2002) at Johnson City Medical Center. Mark attended high school at Woodberry Forest, Culpepper, Va., and Dobyns-Bennett High School, where he participated in lacrosse and football. He attended college at the University of South Carolina, Columbia, S.C., and East Tennessee State University, where he majored in English and history. He was former co-owner of Shinbone Outdoor Center in Chuckey, Tenn., where he pursued his passion for whitewater rafting. He had recently returned to college at East Tennessee State University, where he had almost completed his masters degree. Mark planned to attain his Ph.D. so that he could teach history. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Frank and Alberta Waddey; maternal grandfather, Fred Bolton, all formerly of Memphis, Tenn.; and stepfather, Fred Archer, formerly of Kingsport. Survivors include his father and stepmother, Walter and Cathy Waddey, Greeneville; mother, Marie Archer, Kingsport; sisters, Karen Waddey, Kingsport, and Laura Waddey, Bristol; stepsisters, Catherine and Christian Soronen, Greeneville, Bonny Jones, Jonesville, Va., and Carole Harris, Shallotte, N.C.; maternal grandmother, Hattie Bolton, Kingsport; and stepgrandparents, Walter and Catherine Ham, Charlotte, N.C. Graveside services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Depew’s Chapel Church Cemetery, 2950 Reservoir Road, Exit 52 off I-181 at Meadowview Parkway, go west approximately 2 miles. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Kingsport Animal Shelter, 2141 Idle Hour Road, Kingsport, Tenn. 37660.
