Dickson – Shipley Cemetery — 3 Comments

  1. In your listing of transcriptions for the Dickson – Shipley Cemetery, you reflect Margaret C., 3 Aug 1843 5 Jul 1905, as the wife of Enoch Shipley. She was, in fact, the wife of George Washington Shipley, whom she married ca 1865. Although I don’t have complete documentation, I believe her full name was Margaret Clonniger Fitzgerald Shipley. In the 1850 and 1860 census, at the age of 7 and 16, respectively, she was in the household of her mother, Ann Fitzgerald, residing in Sullivan County. I believe Ann’s maiden name was Clonniger and that she was connected to the Clonnigers of Knox County. I added the Dickson – Shipley Cemetery to Find A Grave and created memorials to all in your listing at this cemetery. Several have been linked to family members in other cemeteries.

    • Well, I’m shaking my head…you’re right about Margaret being the wife of George. Her tombstone even says so! The information shown in brackets indicate added information that’s not on the marker, but clearly, her stone says that she’s the wife of George. As for her being a Coppinger, it’s very likely, since Higgins Coppinger settled close by. Thanks for the correction. We’ll get it straightened out on the site soon.

  2. As it turns out, I maDe an error in my original email to you. Margaret Fitzgerald Shipley’s middle name was Coppinger, not Clonniger. She was the daughter of George and Hannah “Ann” Coppinger Fitzgerald.
