Box 5, Folder 7 -  Stewart County Field Officers, 1804:

 

This is to certify that I, William Curl, Sheriff of Stewart County, in pursuance of an act of the General Assembly passed at Knoxville on the seventh day of November 1803, have proceeded to hold an election at the house of George Martin’s, the place of holding Court in the County aforesaid, on the first Thursday and Friday in June 1804, for field officers, at which time and place was duly and legally elected Thomas Clinton, Colonel, Joshua Williams, First Major and Starling May, Second Major.

In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal, this 8th day of June 1804.

This is to certify that there was an election held at George Petty’s in Stewart County to elect a Capt., Lieut. and Ensign, which has been conducted agreeable to law.  William Green was elected Capt., Robert Lancaster Lieut. and Larry Satterfield Ensign, certified by us.

Warden’s muster ground, under the inspection of John Kizer, James Poyner and Martin Wells, free holders in said County, for the purpose of electing an Ensign in said Capt.’s company.  William McAlister & James Greer are candidates.  Greer has eight votes.  McAlister is elected, having ten votes.

 State of Tennessee, Stewart County.  By virtue of a writ of election directed to Taply Maddux, a Justice of the Peace in the County aforesaid, there was an election held in the County aforesaid on the sixth day of March 1813 in Captain Asa Atkins’ Company, for the purpose of electing an Ensign in said Company.  James Randal and Charles Roper were candidates and James Randal was elected by a majority of seven votes.  Given under our hands the day and date above written.

Stewart County, 12th June 1813.  We, Abraham Clark, Nathan Peeples and Jeremiah Norrod, do certify that on the day and date above mentioned, that an election was opened and held at the Court House in Dover in the County aforesaid, for the purpose of electing a Lieutenant in Captain James Gray’s Company in the 26th Regiment of the Militia of Tennessee.  Henry Lightfoot was fairly and constitutionally elected Lieutenant in said Company.

 State of Tennessee, Stewart County.  I John, Allen, Sheriff of said County, do hereby certify that at an election held for the purpose of electing one Lieutenant Colonel Commandant, one First Major and one Second Major for the twenty-sixth Regiment of Militia of Tennessee, that Robert Cooper was duly & constitutionally elected Colonel, Thomas Gray First Major and Robert Walker Second Major.  The aforesaid election was held at the usual places in the County Stewart on the first & second days of July 1813, according to writ to me directed from the Brigadier General of the Sixth Brigade.  I have been served with a notice that the election of Thomas Gray will be contested.  Given under my hand & this 10th day of July 1813.

 State of Tennessee, Stewart County.  In pursuance of orders issued by the Commandant of the 26th Regiment of Militia of the State aforesaid, there was an election held in the County aforesaid for the purpose of electing a Captain & Lieutenant.  We whose names undersign were qualified as inspectors to hold the election aforesaid.  James Williams was duly and constitutionally elected Captain, and Wiley Ward Lieutenant.  Given under our hands this the 17th day of July 1813.

Sir, we have held an election agreeable to the orders directed to me, the poles name opened, John Hagler and Crawford Bradford, candidates.  We find by counting out the votes that John L. Hagler is elected by a majority of 36 votes as Captain in the 2nd Battalion of the 26th Regiment of Militia.

Dear Sir, with the enclosed returns, you will find a commission for John Patterson of the County of Rhea, as an Ensign. About the same time, a commission should have issued for Etheldred Folks as an Ensign in this Regiment. Presuming that it is owing to some mistake, I have taken the liberty to enclose you Mr. Patterson's commission, and must request to examine if my return came to hand for Mr. Folks’ commission.

Nashville, Sept. 11th 1815

            Your letter enclosing the return of the election for cavalry officers in Stewart County has been received.

            The commissions for Capt. King and Lieut. Blanks have been issued and forwarded to them.

            The certificate states that William Williams has been elected Ensign, and as there is no such officer of Cavalry as Ensign, the commission for Williams has not been issued.

Sir, I received the within note relative to the election of Williams of Stewart County as Ensign of Cavalry. The mistake was made by the judges of the election. You will please issue a commission for William Williams as Coronet and forward it to him as soon as possible.

Cooper, resigned, Thomas Gray Esquire was fairly and constitutionally elected Colonel in said 26th Regiment.

I, John Bailey, one of the Justices of the Peace for the County of, do hereby certify that, in obedience to a writ of election to me elected, I have held an election at the courthouse in the town of Dover on Saturday the 30th of March 1816 for the purpose of electing an Ensign for said company, and George House was duly elected.

Agreeable to a writ of election to me directed from the Col. commanding the 26th Regiment of the aforesaid state's militia, I have this 6th of April 1816 held an election under the inspection of Nathan Thomas, John Kizer and James Tagert, freeholders in the County aforesaid, for the purpose of electing an Ensign in Capt. William James's company in the County aforesaid, in which election John Kelly and John Pearce are candidates, and said Pearce is elected, having a majority of sixteen votes.

In obedience to a writ of election directed to me from the Brigadier General of the sixth Brigade of Tennessee Militia, I have held an election at the courthouse in the town of Dover on the sixteenth and seventeenth days of January 1817, for the purpose of electing a first Major for the 26th Regiment, and I do hereby certify that William King was duly elected first Major by a large majority.
