Go To Pleasant Shade Schematic Late 1940's to Early 1950's

In the late 1940s through the 1970s, Lester "Slackum" Gregory operated this garage. Slackum
recently died on Oct 8, 2002. In the late 1950s, I would ask Slackum's advice concerning the
"ills" of my old 1938 Chevy and he would let me borrow his tools to work on the car.

I once heard the story of how Slackum got his nickname. As a small boy, he was very fond
of bananas. An older man bought him a bunch and as he ate them the man would ask,
"How do you "slackum" (like them)?" The man slurred "like them" and from that
time on most people of Pleasant Shade referred to Lester Gregory as "Slackum".
Slackum was the father of Carthage postmaster, Jerry Gregory.
