Tennie Wester
Tennie Wester lived near Hickman in the 15th Civil District of Smith County, TN. She worked
for Ed and Sophia Agee from 1907-1913 as a daytime nanny for their daughter, Bessie Agee,
from her birth to age 6. Two of Bessie's brothers (Herman born in 1900 and Elbert born in 1902)
decided it would be funny to play a trick on Miss Tennie. They got a bucket of water and waited
in back of the outhouse for Miss Tennie to get the "call of nature". They threw the bucket of water
under the seat and frightened her so much that she ran back to the house screaming. The fun only
lasted until their dad got home. That put an end to playing tricks on Miss Tennie. I would imagine
the punishment involved a belt!
