Generation No. 1

1.  STEPHEN1 SHEPARD was born Abt. 1810 in VA., and died 1839 in Nashville, TN. A Bordeaux Cemetery.  He married MARTHA MADDOX December 02, 1828 in Prince Edwards Co. VA., daughter of DAVID MADDOX and ANN HARDIMAN.

Notes for STEPHEN SHEPARD:

Virginia Tax records show Stephen living in Jamestown in Prince Edwards Co.

1830 cencus shows them with one child in Prince Edwards Co. VA. Stephen and Martha came to Davidson Co. TN. , and settled on the Cumberland River which is now called Bordeaux. Due to an inventory list, taken after Stephen's death, we know that Stephen ran a sawmill or lumberyard in partnership with  Ira Sawyer. We also know that Stephen died between 1838 and 1840 with malaria fever. We believe that Stephen was buried near the sawmill business in Bordeaux.  Mr. Charley Maxey, an older man from Stroudsville showed Earl Shepard where Stephen was buried one day. Earl told John about this when he was young and again later when he was an adult. He said coming home from Nashville after crossing the Bordeaux bridge you turn right , go up a hill and the grave was in some poplar trees. After Stephen's death, Martha and her three sons moved to Thomasville, Cheatham Co. TN. and there they farmed. Martha died on the farm (three miles from Thomasville) and her tombstone is still there and marked with her name.

Stephen Shepard's parents is believed to have been William Shepard and Elizabeth Allen.

Stephen's brother may have been William B. Shepard whom married Margery Childress on 1-18-1825 in Davidson Co. TN.  Their bondsman were Joseph Vaulx and James A. Porter.

We have a copy of Stephen's inventory list shown in Davidison Co TN Book 12 page 1 - written 4-7-1840.

Notes for MARTHA MADDOX:

Martha and possibly her son,  Scott are buried in a cemetery,  we call the Martha Shepard Cemetery.  Directions to the cemetery are,  you turn right at Stack's Store on 41A south (going to Nashville, you will go to Thomasville Tn. at the bottom of a hill, at a stop, turn left. Go about 100 yards, then take road to right. Stay on this road 2 to 3 miles.Turn left at sign that reads Poplar Ridge Rd. Go about 1 mile, turn right at Poplar Ridge Ln. Go about one mile up and down hills. There will be two trailers on a curve, post box #'s 1507 and 1501, the cemetery will be in behind them in a patch of woods.  There is a sign in the woods reads "Martha Shepard Cemetery".  There is only one grave marker in the cemetery, Martha Shepard (wife of Stephen Shepard). There are about 25 other unmaked graves there.  John Shepard and family members started cleaning the cemetery on 3-5-2005.

Children of STEPHEN SHEPARD and MARTHA MADDOX are:

                  i. JOHN C.2 SHEPARD, b. 1829, VA.; d. 1903, Robertson Co. TN. Shepard Cem..

Notes for JOHN C. SHEPARD:

John C. Shepard was a bachelor. When he was older, he lived with his great niece Erma Adams.

It was passed down that John told this story, Someone broke in on him one day and robbed him. When he was asked by the robbers  " Where is your money" . He took his bible and tossed it into the fireplace and told them that the money was in it. The robbers got the bible out and took his money. Lizzie Hyde told John Shepard (son of Samuel Jesse Shepard) she saw the charred bible that belonged to John C. Shepard. After John was robbed, he told others that he buried his coin money in the yard under a dogwood tree. After his death the family members looked for the dogwood and the yard was filled with dogwood trees. They never found John's money. After the farm was sold a black man was plowing a field there and a can with $300.00 in coins was uncovered. He took the money to the bank and cashed it in at face value. We belieive this was John C. Shepard's money.

2.              ii. WILLIAM BENJAMIN SHEPARD, b. April 1832, TN.; d. 1913, Robertson Co. TN. Shepard Cem..

                iii. WALTER SCOTT SHEPARD, b. 1838, TN.; d. 1858.

Notes for WALTER SCOTT SHEPARD:

On August 2, 1858 in Cheatham Co. TN. there was a letter of administrator for  W. S. Shepard. They sold items belonging to Walter Scott Shepard because he didn't leave a will. His mother Martha Shepard was listed as a buyer.

We believe Walter Scott Shepard is buried beside his mother Martha in the Martha Shepard Cemetery located on Poplar Ridge Lane in Cheatham Co. TN. He has only a field stone as a marker.

3.  SAMUEL FRANKLIN3 SHEPARD (WILLIAM BENJAMIN2, STEPHEN1) was born June 28, 1856 in Ky., and died November 22, 1930 in Robertson Co. TN. Shepard Cem..  He married (1) MARTHA MILLER, daughter of BILL MILLER and SUSAN UNKNOWN.  He married (2) MARY ANN STROUD November 22, 1877 in Robertson Co. TN., daughter of JESSIE STROUD and MARGARET HEAD.

Notes for SAMUEL FRANKLIN SHEPARD:

1880 Farm Cencus in Robertson Co. TN. shows 18 acres tilled, 39 woodland and forest. Farm valued at $600.00, $25.00 in farm machinery, $50.00 in livestock, and in 1879 sold $200.00 in farm produce. Bought $4.00 in fertilizer and owned one mule. Both could read and write.

Samuel Franklin was a preacher.

The Shepard Cemetery in Stroudsville is located just behind where Samuel Franklin and Mary Ann owned a home.  Previous owners was a family by the name of Williams. The house was log and had two 20x20 rooms, a dog hall, and two rooms out the back. One was a kitchen, the other may have been used as a dining room. The house had a long porch in front and a L shape porch on the back. On the second floor it had two 20x20 bedrooms and a loft. It had a big cellar and a cistern that was just beside the back porch, that is still visable today. The reason the house had a cellar was because Mr. Williams had an orchard of fruit trees. He sold cider and vinegar and stored it in the cellar. There have been three tornado's that have passed over the Shepard Cemetery location, that we know of. The last one was in May 2003. One blew the front porch off of Samuel Franklins home. This was about one year before the house burned down in 1913. We know the house burned in 1913 becauce Samuel Franklin's son and family was living with them. His granddaughter Mable was born in the house that burned in 1912. Her brother Jesse was born in 1914 in a home that her father owned.

Mary Ann Shepard set flowers out in her yard. Still today, every Febuary or March there are buttercups all over the old home place.

We have been told before anyone from the Shepard family was buried in the cemetery, there were ten graves already located on the property. We belive they may have been from the Williams family. The first person from the Shepard family that was buried in the cemetery was Claude Washington Ogg born 9-1-1901 and died 11-6-1903. He was the son of Luther Ogg and Jane Shepard.
