MASSENGALE, Pete M. (1942)

From the Dayton Herald dated Thursday, Dec. 31, 1942:

Pete M. Massengale, 71, prominent farmer and lifelong resident of Rhea county, died early Christmas day at his home on the Washington road.  He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lula Bishop Massengale; five sons, Bryant, Earl and Doss of Dayton, and Arnold and Grover of Battle Creek, Michigan; and four daughters, Mrs. Charles Roberts, Mrs. W.N. Cochran and Mrs. Floyd Suttles of Dayton and Mrs. J. T. Smith of Lenoir City.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from the New Union Baptist church with the Revs. Graddy Roddy, C. E. McDonald and Charles Runyan officiating.  Burial was in Spence Cemetery with Sawyers Funeral Service in charge.

HARRISON, Floyd (1942)

Funeral services for Floyd William Harrison, 47, who died in Chattanooga Sunday night from injuries received in an automobile accident, where held from the Ogden Baptist church Tuesday afternoon, with the Rev. James M. Catlett officiating.  Interment was in Ogden Cemetery.

SUTTLE, Kate (1931)

From The Dayton Herald dated Thursday, July 23, 1931:

Mrs. Kate Mae Martin Suttle, aged 28 years, died at the family home north of Dayton the afternoon of July 18.  She was born August 25, 1903.  Funeral services were conducted in the home by Misses Linda and Paula Risser and Martha Pleghaus. Interment in Buttram cemetery.

Mrs. Suttle is survived by three chidren, Lucille, Carl and Martin; her mother; three sisters, Mrs. Lena Leffeer, Mrs Julia Marler and Mrs. Grace Hammontree and one brother, Lester Martin.

CAMPBELL, J.F. (1931)

From The Dayton Herald dated Thursday, July 23, 1931:

J. F. Campbell Dies at a Ripe Old Age

J. F. Campbell aged nearly 86 years, died at 3 o’clock Thursday morning at the home of his son-in-law, G. S. Peavyhouse, several miles north of Dayton.  Death was caused by infirmities of age.  He had made his home in the Peavyhouse family for the last twelve years.  The body was taken in Coulter’s hearse to Jamestown for burial in the family cemetery there.  Mr. Campbell is survived by nine sons and daughters and by a large number of grandchildren.

McCUISTON, Bessa Thompson (1930)

McCuiston, Bessa Thompson, four-months old baby of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Thompson, died Monday, Funeral services were held from the residence in South Dayton.  Interment was at the Garrison Cemetery.

WILLIAMS, Sidney (1930)

Mrs. Sidney Williams, age 33, died at her home in Morgantown at 2:30 Monday morning, after a lingering illness.  She joined the Big Springs church at Loyston, Tenn., early in life and was active in church work.  She and her family moved to Morgantown four years ago.

She is survived by her husband, four children, James, Mabel, Edith and Grace; two brothers, Fred Ford and G. W. Ford of Loyston, Tenn.; four sisters, Miss Sarah Ford and Mrs. Orlena Smith, of Knoxville; Miss Viola Ford and Mrs. Matilda Melton of Loyston, Tenn.   Funeral services were conducted Tuesday by Rev. H. K. Keith at the Cove cemetery, where interment followed. Pallbearers were: Gayter Morgan, Henniger Wilson, George Morgan, and Alvin Morgan.

MILLARD, William (1930)

William Millard Drowns in River Near Decatur

William Millard, who has relatives living near Dayton and who was favorably known to many here, was drowned last Sunday afternoon in the Hiwassee river near Decatur. His Widow and five young children survive him.

Millard was crossing the river at Russell’s Ferry.  He was standing at the edge of the boat, lost his balance and fell into the water, sinking immediately.  Rescuers recovered the body within twenty-five minutes and first aid remedies were administered on the spot and also by physicians at Decatur, but life had become extinct.

Mr. Millard and his family were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Colbaugh, of Decatur, with whom they were spending a vacation period.  The body was take to the family home for interment.

Carney- Mrs. Anna Irene Burnette, 84 of Dayton, Tenn., widow of Mynatt Carney Sr., died Friday morning in Rhea County Medical Center. She was one of the oldest members of Clear Creek Baptist Church. Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Mildred Ballard, Evensville, Tenn., Mrs. Virginia Hallman, Chattanooga, Mrs. Jewell Smith, Dayton, Mrs. Lucile Loy, Hixson, and Mrs. Mary Jane Penny, Signal Mountain; three sons, Garland Carney, Detroit, Mich., Mynatt Carney Jr., Daisy, and Bobby Carney, Hixson; sister, Mrs. Russell Roddy, Dayton; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 3:30 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Earl Glass and the Rev. Felix Harris officiating. Burial will be in Montgomery Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons George and Scott Ballard, Bill and David Carney, Floyd O. Hallman Jr., Harold Penny Jr., Felix Fisher, Johnny Ferrell and Harry Hixson. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Clear Creek Baptist Church. Arrangements are by Sawyer’s Funeral Service, Dayton.

CARNEY, Mynatt Sr  14 April 1897 –  6 May 1978

CARNEY, Mynatt Sr., 81, of Rt. 4, Dayton, died at his residence Saturday morning. He was a pioneer settler of Rhea County, a member of the Clear Creek Baptist Church, and a member of the Adult Sunday School class of the church. Survived by wife, Anna Carney; three sons, Garland Carney of Detroit; Mynatt Carney Jr. of Daisy, and Robert Carney of Hixson; five daughters; Mrs. Chester Ballard of Evansville; Virginia Hollman of Chattanooga; Jewel Smith of Dayton; Francis Loy of Hixson, and Mary Jane Penny of Signal Mountain; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the Clear Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Earl Glass and Rev. John Kelly officiating. Pallbearers will be Bill and David Carney, George and Scott Ballard, Harold Penny Jr., Floyd Hollman Jr., Jimmy Wilkey and Neal Ray. Honorary pallbearers will be Kelsoe Ballard, Jerry Wilkey, Jim Able, Grover Aikman, Tom Collins, Tom Kyle, John Cox, Leroy Clark,, and the members of the Adult Sunday School class of Clear Creek Baptist Church. The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to services. Sawyer’s Funeral Service in charge.
