served in the VA Line, was born in Jan 1751 in Bedford Co, VA, resided in Henry Co, Virginia when he enlisted, later moved to Stokes Co, NC, had also lived at one time in Lee Co, VA. Applied for his pension on 25 Feb 1834 in Hawkins TN, at which time he had lived in TN for 30 yrs. He declared that he had married 2nd Miss Elva COLLINS in Lee VA abt 1803 (the name of his 1st wife not given). Mormon died 16 Sep 1842 in Hancock TN, and his widow applied there on 2 Jul 1855, age 85 at the time (except in 1857, she gave her age as 82). She declared that they had had seven children, but the only ones named were Peter, Mormon and Phoebe Lawson. In 1855 a Jonas Lawson was of Hawkins TN, age 55. (Pension W9501, BLW#39226-160-55, White)

He was born 5 Nov 1734 on Staten Island in New York, and enlisted in the spring of 1775 in Captain Joseph Morris' company, Colonel Winant's New Jersey regiment and was in the Siege of Quebec. Early in 1776 he enlisted again and served in Captain Daniel Piatt's and Captain William Piatt's companies, Colonel Ogden's First New Jersey regiment. While helping to build Fort Washngton he was wounded by a piece of timber falling on him. He was wounded in the right thigh at the battle of Brandywine and in the left leg in the battle of Monmouth. He was at the surrender of Cornwallis. He was discharged in the latter part of 1783. (Rev War Pension File)

Armstrong adds that after his discharge, John LUSK "re-enlisted and continued in the United States Army until he was eighty years of age. He is called the greatest private soldier who ever lived. He was in literally scores of engagements and campaigns and only once in his more than fifty years of service was assigned to garrison duty for a short period."

Memphis Enquirer "Death of An Old Patriot - The Last Soldier of the Old French War In Canada Is Gone Died – In Warren county, Tennessee, on the 8th of June, Mr. John LUSK, (pronounced LISK in his native Dutch) at the advanced age of one hundred and four years.
