2. ESTHER2 MORRISON (THOMAS1) was born September 18, 1801 in BLOUNT CO., TN.,
and died April 16, 1870 in MONROE CO., TN. Bur: Prospect Cem..
She married WILLIAM WEBB Abt. 1820 in TN., son of JOHN ROCHE WEBB, ?.
He was born December 10, 1801 in TN., and died July 19, 1878 in MONROE CO., TN.
Bur: Webb Ftm. Cem..
Notes for WILLIAM WEBB:
The father of William Webb was most probably John Roach Webb.
(Source) Court record in McMinn County, Tn. William gave up his rights as
son of John Webb Roach. Several researchers fell the name was John Roach Webb
because everyone named in the action were Webb's.
Court Case:
Hiwassee District Entry Book A
1 Aug. 1825, John W. Roach Entry as Occupant Entrerer. 6 Feb. 1838,
Lucinda Webb Assigns her interest, as heir to John Webb Roach, to Martin Webb.
14 Jan. 1845, WILLIAM WEBB relinquishes his right as son of John Webb Roach,
and Martin Webb assigns his interest as heir of John Webb Roach.
Jan. 25, 1834 William Webb purchased 160 acres from G. W. Madden in Monroe
County.
Will of William Webb: Will book C pg. 54 Monroe County, Tn.
To daughter Hulda Webb "who is an idiot" personal items and twice the amount
of estate as other distributees. Son Elijah N. Webb Apt. her guardian.
Son William R. Webb not to recieve any portion. To son Thomas Webb $5.00.
Exec. Elijah N. Webb. Wits. E.E. Griffith, B.B. McCroskey. Executed 12-31-1874.
Probated July 1878.
William was laid to rest at the Webb Family Cemetery, he had a falling out with
the church and did not want to be buried in the church cemetery there with his
wife.
On 8/1/1825, "John W. Roach" acquired a grant to title by "occupant entry" to
certain
property in Monroe County, of the Hiawassee District of NC (now located in
McMinn County,
Tn) noted by Grant No. 1475, McMinn County, Tn Courthouse Grant Book A, pp 3&4.
(All references are to the McMinn County Courthouse Grant Books unless otherwise
noted).
Most have said that this was a scrivener's error (transcription or typo)and that
the name should have John Roach Webb. I am not so sure.
On the same day John W. Roach acquired his property, "William Webb"
acquired title to certain property by Grant No. 1483, Book A, p462. "William
Webb"
acquired additional properties by Grant No 3488 dated 3/15/1827 - Book C, p 270,
Grant No. 660 dated 8/14/1832 - Book B, p 256 and Grant No 67 dated 3/10/1826 -
Book B, p256.
On 7/23/1825, "Larkin Webb" acquired title to certain property noted in
Grant No. 1189, Ibid. On 2/6/1838, "Lucinda Webb", in an entry under Entry 1189,
assigned her "interest as one of the heirs of _______________ to the within
named land
to Martin Webb..." (blank in original entry) Ibid.
On 10/7/1831, Joseph White assigned his interest in Grant 2878 "unto 'John
Roach'
test Jerden Roach." ("test" = Testator?) Book A, p212. Apparently on the same
day,
"John Roach" transferred the same interest to Charles Grossland. Ibid.
On 11/25/1825, "John Roach" (no middle initial) acquired an interest in property
described under Grant 1230 from John Atkinson. Book C, p. 146. "John Roach" on
6/15/1833 assigned the South half to James Shelton and "John Roahc" assigned the
North half to Christopher Graves on the same day. Ibid. On 5/7/1827, "John
Roach"
assigned any interest he might have in Grant 1230 to "Ezekiel and James
Shelton".
Ibid.
The only references I could find to a John Webb during the pertinent timeframe,
other then with regards to Grant 1475 (more on this later) was an assignment of
interest
in Grant ?644 from "John Shively and John Weeb and John Davos" to John Seaborn.
The entry indicated that conveyance was signed as follows "John Webb. John
Shively
John Davis". Book C, p 146.
Getting a feeling for the state of the records? If we stop here, we could
conclude
the following. There was a John Roach. There was a William Webb. Some
relationship
existed between Larkin Webb, Lucinda Webb and Martin Webb. Finally a John Webb
or a
John Weeb existed.
The trouble begins when we return to where we started- Grant 1475 from the state
of
NC to "John W. Roach" dated 8/1/1825. The next entry under the Grant is an
assignment
of the Grant to James D. Devine by document executed by "John ?. White Test_John
R. Webb".
("Test" = Testator?) Book A pp 3&4. NOTE> Title acquired as "John W. Roach";
title transferred by John White as Testator for "John R. Webb".
Back to the scriveners error? The next entry under Grant 1475 is an assignment
by Lucinda Webb of "any interest as one of the heirs of JOHN WEBB ROACH to the
within land to Martin Webb..." dated 7/6/1838. (emphasis added) Book A, p4.
The next entry is a "relinquishment" by William Webb of "all any (sic) right,
title and interest of MY FATHER JOHN WEBB ROACH's estate as an heir of the
estate
to the within land to David Trudle... dated 6/14/1845 (emphasis added). Ibid.
The final entry is an assignment by Martin Webb of "all any (sic) interest as
one of the heirs of JOHN WEBB ROACH" to David Trudle dated 7/6/1845.
Have I cleared up the confusion regarding John Roach Webb and John Webb Roach.
If so, can someone explain it to me. By the way, William Webb (DOB 12/10/1801)
had a son named "John Roach Webb" (DOB 2/4/1831)
Any suggestions on how to proceed? PS Grant Books used because deeds for period
destroyed by fire at courthouse.

Notes for PLEASENT MORRISON:
Died from self inflected knife wound, age 47 yrs.
Three years and three days after the death of his sons, Gilford and Isaac,
he took his own life. They died on the Sultana, April 27, 1865.
There is a survivors of the Sultana reunion every year in Knoxville, Tn. at Mt.
Olive Baptist Church. This year 1997 on Apr. 18.
The Sultana was a Yankie steamboat bringing ex-prisoners of war to Cairo, ILL.
Considered the most disastrous water mishap of its day in 1865, the sinking of
the Sultana.
Capt. Pink Cameron enlisted Gilford and Isaac Morrison June 17, 1864 in
Mashville,
for a 3 year hitch with the Third Tennessee Calvalry of the Union Army. They
were
brothers ages 17 and 19 years old. Life was an adventure to them then. Tennessee
was strongley divided in sentiment and the State sent troops to both sides
during
the Civil War.
After the war, they were released from Cahaba prison, on a dark night beyond
Memphis,
the Sultana, carring prisoners from Andersonville and Cahaba prison, April 27,
1865
exploded. Nearly 1700 deaths were recorded. More survivors died later.
The loss was too much for the son's father who after months awaited a reunion
that never came. He took his own life.
