Perry County, Tennessee

Nix Cemetery analysis

Analysis contributed by:  Jan Monnin 03 February 2009
Photographs contributed by:  Sandy Daniel

Nix Cemetery is a well maintained cemetery located in the Roan Creek Valley of Perry County, Tennessee. It is somewhat difficult to estimate the age of the cemetery and number of burials because any fieldstones once present have been removed. There is evidence of burials in much of the open area in the center of the cemetery. There is one grave house with no indication of who is buried there.   This cemetery is located in the Roan Creek section of the Tennessee River watershed.

There are a couple known transcriptions of this cemetery:

David Donahue recorded Nix Cemetery February 17, 2001 and checked and updated it September 22, 2004. Mary (Stewart) Bowen and Melissa (Snyder) Bowen recorded Nix Cemetery in the early 1990s. Their record appears in Mary Bowen's Perry County, Tennessee Cemetery Records (Vol. I). This earlier record is referred to as Bowen in the notes below.

  • David Donahue recorded this cemetery on 17 February 2001;

  • David Donahue checked and updated it on 22 September 2004;

  • (both of the Donahue transcriptions were recorded on the TnGenWeb site currently at:   (click here)

  • Mary (Stewart) Bowen and Melissa (Snyder) Bowen recorded this cemetery in the early 1990s.  Their transcription was also published in the Bowen Cemetery book,  Volume 1.  This is published online (click here).

  • Sandy Daniel took pictures of these tombstones in November 2008, which are included below;

In the list below, I’ve started with what is recorded on the new searchable TnGenWeb site and compared it to the other transcriptions.  Note:  the information included in the columns may be more than what is listed on the tombstone.  It may be information collected from various persons.
