Perry County, Tennessee

Hufstedler Cemetery analysis

Analysis contributed by:  Jan Monnin 14 August 2009

This cemetery is located in the Hurricane Creek section of the Buffalo River Watershed, East Side.  The cemetery is located on private property, but is reached driving south and west on Whitwell Cemetery Road. A gravel driveway with a sign indicating Pinkney's Tomb joins at an acute angle on the south. The drive climbs steeply to the top of the bluff.

The main feature of Hufstedler Cemetery is a very large grave house, called Pinkney's tomb, which stands on a bluff overlooking the Buffalo River. This started as a walled cemetery but later was roofed. The cut limestone wall is 26 feet 3 inches square and almost 5 feet high. Massive support beams were laid atop the east and west walls and a roof was built over the entire area. There is a door in the north gable. Steep steps climb up the wall and down into the grave house. In 2004 some of the east wall had fallen and the northeast corner which supports one of the massive beams had cracked away from the north wall and was beginning to lean outward.

The plot inside looks as though it could contain spaces for ten or twelve to be buried there.  There are eight known burials, so there are probably other unmarked burials.

This cemetery is listed on the National Register of Historic Places

There are a couple known transcriptions of this cemetery:

  • Mrs. Sidney Kirby and Billy Grimm recorded their transcriptions and notes in April 1972 and published their results in "River Counties" published in July 1977;

  • David Donahue recorded this cemetery on September 2004;

  • This cemetery’s transcription was also published in the Bowen Cemetery book, which is also online at  http://www.tngenweb.org/records/perry/cemeteries/bowen2.txt

In the list below, I’ve started with what is recorded on the new searchable TnGenWeb site, compared it to the other transcriptions and made a note of any differences.

no tombstone exists today of this burial;  Per granddaughter Kyle Largent, there were no more spaces inside the tomb at 1923 when Louisa Jane died, so she was buried as though standing.
