KIA 13 November 1942.
Shipped aboard the USS Juneau CL-52. On the night of 12-13 November 1942, Juneau was part of a task force that set out to stop a
Japanese fleet headed for Guadalcanal to
bombard the Marines. During the battle Juneau
and USS Atlanta were credited with sinking two destroyers. During the action Juneau was struck by a
torpedo and forced to retire from the action. With only one propeller
functioning Juneau
proceeded to safety through Sealark Channel, along
with the damaged cruiser USS San Francisco CA-38 Cruiser Helena and 2
destroyers.
At about 11h00 on 13 November the Japanese submarine I-26 fired 3 torpedos at San
Francisco. Missing they continued towards Juneau. Dodging the
first two, the third struck Juneau almost in the
same location as the previous damage and Juneau exploded and split in two sinking in
20 seconds. Of the 683 Crew members 14 survived. Among the lost were the 5
Sullivan brothers.
