Will of Thompson Carter, Decd.

Will Proven at June Term, 1857 (See Minute Book No. 8, page 32)

I Thompson Carter, do make and publish this my last Will and Testament, hereby revoking and making void all other wills by me at any time made.

First – I commit my soul to God who gave it

Secondly – I direct that my funeral expenses and all my just debts be paid as soon after my death as possible out of any monies I may die possessed of or may first come into the hands of my Executrix.

Thirdly – Having full confidence in the integrity and ability of my beloved wife Nancy, it is my will and I do hereby give and bequeath to her all my property both real and personal during her natural life for her compfort and support and for the purpose of raising and educating my children after her death all my property to be equally divided among all my children.

Fourthly – I do leave it discretionary with my wife Nancy to give or not a portion to each child as they become of age having the same valued to them that it may and shall be deducted out of their portion when a general division takes place.

Again – My will is if any of my children should die before they marry or become of age, their property to be equally divided amoung the rest of my children.

Lastly – I do hereby nominate and appoint my wife Nancy my Executrix. In witness whereof I do to this my will set my hand and seal, this 23rd day of July 1849.

W. T. Carter Dies After Long Illness

W. T. Carter, 72, born at Medon but a resident of Jackson for the greater part of his life, passed away at 6:20 o’clock last night at his home, 165 Stoddert street, after a lengthy illness. Mr. Carter suffered a stroke of paralysis and his condition during the past several days had been most critical.

He was a member of the Mount Tabor Cumberland Presbyterian church and is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mary Spencer Carter; a son, L. M. Carter of Belzonia, Miss., and two daughters, Mrs. W. E. Vincent of Union City and Mrs. E. G. Hill of Jackson; a sister, Mrs. W. H. Smith of Paducah, Texas.

The funeral was held this afternoon at 5 o’clock from the chapel of the Smith Funeral Home and the interment followed in Hollywood cemetery.

The following served as pallbearers: Ed Terry, H. W. Sanders, E. E. McKinnie, Winfield Pope, Charles Casey and Rayford Newsome.
