I was told:: My Grandfather used to talk some about Luke Brooks being Cherokee and of how long his black hair was (tied in a knot and still hung to his waste) and how strong he was. I started searching my ancestry and found much about his father John Richard Brooks (buried at what may be named after him the J.R. Brooks Cemetery in Macon Co.) and his wife and children some of whom were born and died at a North Carolina Indian reservation.
