Tennessee Birth Records |
You may obtain state-wide birth records for the time period of 1908-1912 from the Tennessee State Library and Archives. For birth records for 1914 to the present, you will need to contain the Tennessee Office of Vital Records.
A note from Ronald A. Lee, Director of Public Services at the Archives:
The state of Tennessee issued "delayed" birth records for individuals born prior to the 1908 law that required the keeping of birth records. These records were not automatically issued; the individual had to request the record from the state. The Tennessee State Library and Archives has delayed birth certificates for persons born in 1899 or before. "Delayed" birth records for the year 1900 and after are held by the Tennessee Office of Vital Records.
These records can be invaluable in your search. It is advisable to obtain a person's birth record even if you think you know everything about the person. Info included on these records includes name of the person, birth place and date, and name and birthplace of parents.
