This public library has a fine collection of genealogical research on Hawkins County families and local history.  Much of the material has been collected through the efforts of the Hawkins County Genealogical & Historical Society.
Hawkins County is in the Nolichucky Region of the Tennessee Multi-County Regional Library System.

The Archives holds a substantial amount of the county’s public records.  Additionally, genealogical data, maps, and other research aids are available.  The Archives’ is staffed by volunteers who attempt to provide local and historical information to visitors.

The Sullivan County library system has a fine collection of regional history and genealogy materials. Sullivan was the parent of Hawkins County, so it is important to check resources there.

Even though Sullivan was one of the state’s first counties and the parent of Hawkins County, a significant number of early records were destroyed in a fire.  Nonetheless, it is important to make a thorough check of resources here.

McClung’s holdings contain the premiere regional collection of East Tennessee genealogical and historical source materials.

The Museum of East Tennessee History, the Tennessee Archive of Moving Image and Sound, and the Calvin McClung Digital Collection are all important additional components of the East Tennessee Historical Center, which houses the McClung Collection.

The most-important item at the Knox County Archives for those researching early Hawkins County local and family histories is the collection of  Superior Court, Hamilton District Records 1793-1809.  Hawkins County was a part of the Hamilton District for superior court proceedings.

The library has noteworthy regional-interest collections.

The Sherrod Library is also one of the best sources of federal, state, and regional microfilm in East Tennessee.

The Mildred L. Iddins Special Collections, housed on the third floor of Stephens-Burnett Library, consists of three main components: the Appalachian & Rare Book Collection, Baptist Archives, and College Archives.  Each plays a special role in helping preserve Carson-Newman’s unique heritage.

The library has a surprising collection of regional resources for historical research.  The Baptist Archives contains material from throughout East Tennessee, Virginia, and North Carolina.

TSLA has an outstanding collection of original source documents, manuscripts, and family histories; it also has microfilmed copies of most extant Hawkins County public records, church records, and newspapers.

TVA is an excellent resource for maps and topographic information about East Tennessee.  TVA has historic maps in its collection as well.  For the areas surrounding its dams, TVA has a large number of aerial photographs taken prior to World War II.

Walters State Community College Library was endowed with the lifetime collection of the late Miss Marshall, whose genealogical and historical work concentrated in Grainger and surrounding counties.

The FHL has a huge collection of documents and research materials related to  Hawkins County and the surrounding region.  The resources are too extensive to describe in this limited space.
