MCCANN GENEALOGY

Contact Janell McCann

Other researchers and I of this descendancy have been "stuck" on our Phillips,
McCanns, Garrisons, Lingo's, Martin's, Reeds, Gammells, Binghams and other
lateral lines who passed through Hardin Co., TN.  Any help will be appreciated,
as we are having to work with burned out counties, early deaths in AR of our
kin and little other information to go on.

It appears Chesley GARRISON was possibly a brother of the wife of Nathaniel PHILLIPS, although it has not been proven. Certainly the relationship among the MCCANN, PHILLIPS and GARRISON families was very close.

This data accumulated prior to information that Enoch PHILLIPS mar. a MCCANN girl who could be a sister of our MCCANN males in 1850 Calh. Co., AR. Now it seems we will not know how large the MCCANN family was until more are found, including those of Enoch. He was found in 1831 tax list of Hardeman Co., TN, thus would be of legal age and b. at least 1810. Joseph appears to have been born c. 1800 and the wife of Enoch PHILLIPS may have been a sister of Joseph?

Charles SPENCER, admr. of J. R. MCCANN vs. Alexander BINGHAM} Case Demurrer to Plaintiff Declaration. This day came the parties by their attorneys and after all the matters of same raising upon the said defendant demurrer to the plaintiff declaration and said plf. joinder being heard by the ct. here now freely understood. It is considered by the ct. that the said defendant demurrer to the said plf.. declaration be sustained and the he is not bound by the law of the land to answer the said declaration and that said deft. go hence without delay and recover of said plf.. his costs by him about his defense in this behalf expended. Deed Charles SPENCER of McNairy Co., TN to William JONES of Hardin Co., for $250. in hand paid, sells land 81 1/4 A, beginning on a hickory on water of TN river in 9th Surveyor District, Range 6, Sec. 5, adj. David WILSON. Wit. William REDDIN and Henry RICE. Reg. 5-12-1836. Hardin Co., TN D.B. C, p 88-90.

NOTE: This deed may not be for the land of Joseph R. MCCANN as originally thought. Further research on Charles SPENCER revealed he had acquired land in Hardin Co. Since the deed of the 81 1/4 A does not say he is trustee of the MCCANN estate, or administrator, I now do not know what became of the MCCANN land. Because there are so many records of early Hardin Co. that are not extant, one can only hope to find more through other methods and places.

[This is the church where James N. MCCANN was ordained and the building and some of the tombstones were destroyed by a tornado that struck there in 1939 just as a funeral was over and the people were leaving. 39 were killed and most of them are buried there. The church was rebuilt and was in use when I visited there in 1984. The road is downhill at a slight angle when you come to the church on the right, traveling westerly. There is parking space and entry of the church on that level. The cemetery goes about 75 feet to the west across more parking space between it and the church. The main road is steeper down from the point of the church to a bend just beyond the cemetery and veers to the left and comes around the knoll on which the cemetery is located. The property behind the church and cemetery was timber land fenced off and marked "Crossett Lumber Co.". There are some large shade trees, shrubs and flowers planted about the cemetery. Both the church and cemetery were still in use at that time.]
