HANCOCK COUNTY, TENNESSEE

Descendants of Alexander Goins

Donated by Kevin Mullins

Generation No. 1

1. ALEXANDER1 GOINS was born 1815 in North Carolina, and died Bef. 1870.  He married ETHIE COLLINS Bef. 1833 in Hawkins Co, TN?, daughter of VARDY COLLINS and PEGGY GIBSON.  She was born Abt. 1810 in TN.

Notes for ALEXANDER GOINS:

Listed on 1835 and 1836  Hawkins Co., TN Tax Lists. Listed as Head of Household in 1840 Hawkins Co, TN Census. Listed in 1850 Hancock Co, TN Census;

#123/123Alexandria Gowins, 35, m, --, farmer, $300, NC

Effa, 40, f, TN

John, 17, m, TN

Alfread, 15, m, TN

Listed in 1860 Hancock Co, TN Census:

#90/80Alexander Goens, 55, m, farming, $500/80, NC

Elley, 51, f, housework, TN

Melvina Yong, 10, f, VA

Listed as "White" in above records. Alexander may have died before 1870 as Ethie was listed alone in the 1870 Hancock Co, TN Census, where s he was listed as "Mulatto".

It is doubtful that this is the same Alexander Goins who was murdered in Southwest Virginia, the subject of the song "Poor Goins", as the murder happened about 1844. The records listed above rule this out.

Marriage Notes for ALEXANDER GOINS and ETHIE COLLINS:

Ethie was listed as 'Mulatto" in the 1870 Hancock Co Census, when she was living alone next to her son John's family, who was listed as "w hite". In 1880, she was living with John's family and was listed as "white". In all other censuses, she was listed as "white".

Children of ALEXANDER GOINS and ETHIE COLLINS are:

2. JOHN2 GOINS, b. Abt. 1833.

3.       ii. ALFRED GOINS, b. Abt. 1835, TN; d. September 04, 1907, Hancock Co, TN.

Generation No. 2

2. JOHN2 GOINS (ALEXANDER1) was born Abt. 1833.  He married LUCINDA SEXTON Bef. 1859 in Hancock Co, TN?, daughter of SOLOMON SEXT

Notes for JOHN GOINS:

This apparently is not the same person as "Hammer John" Goins, as other researchers have speculated. John was a Civil War veteran, serving in the 1 TN CAV REG (Co A), along with his brother, Alfred. He may be the same John Goins Sr. that was listed as "U.S. Soldier" in the 1890 Lee Co., VA Veterans Census

Notes for LUCINDA SEXTON:

On the 1870 Hancock Co, TN Census, Lucinda lists her birthplace as VA, but in the 1880 Census, she lists her birthplace as KY, and her parents' birthplace as VA

Children of JOHN GOINS and LUCINDA SEXTON are:

i. MARGARET3 GOINS, b. Abt. 1859.

ii.WILLIAM GOINS, b. Abt. 1861; m. AMANDA HIX, August 28, 1879, Hancock Co, TN; b. Abt. 1860

Notes for WILLIAM GOINS:

May be the same William Goins who was living with his wife Amanda as newlyweds in the 1880 Hancock Co, TN Census

Notes for AMANDA HIX:

In the Rev. Arthur Taylor's list of marriages, Amanda's surname was spelled "Hix" but it may have been "Hicks".

iii. JAMES GOINS, b. Abt. 1863.

iv. MARY GOINS, b. Abt. 1865.

Notes for MARY GOINS:

Her name may have been Meany, as it looks that way in the 1870 census.

v.JOHN GOINS, b. Abt. 1867.

Notes for JOHN GOINS:

John lived in Jonesville, VA.

vi.HOWARD GOINS, b. Abt. 1869.

vii.ETHIE GOINS, b. Abt. 1871.

4. viii. ALEX GOINS, b. Abt. 1875.

5. ix. FREELING GOINS, b. Abt. 1879.

3. ALFRED GOINS (ALEXANDER1) was born Abt. 1835 in TN, and died September 04, 1907 in Hancock Co, TN. He married (1) HANNAH GIBSON Bef. 1853. She was born Abt. 1839 in TN?, and died January 10, 1879 in Hancock Co, TN. He married (2) MELVINA JOHNSON Bef. 1880 in Hancock Co, TN?, daughter of JAMES JOHNSON and LYDIA BIRD. She was born May 03, 1853 in Hancock Co, TN, and died December 26, 1941 in Hancock Co, TN.

Notes for ALFRED GOINS:

Alfred was a Civil War vet, serving in the First Tennessee Cavalry Regiment, (Co M and A), alongside his brother John. Also serving was a R.J. Goins. I'm not sure of the relationship if any to R.J. Goins. Alfred suffered from health problems caused by his service, including chronic diarhea and lung problems according to the 1890 Veterans Census of Hancock Co.

After Hannah's death, Alfred married Melvina Johnson Mullins, who he had known since she was a young girl. They lived on Newmans Ridge where Goins Chapel now sits. It is said that the cemetary there (where both Alfred and Viney are buried) started out as their family graveyard. This may have been the land that Alfred bought from John and Mahala Mullins, who lived not too far from this area.

Alfred's death date was recorded by the Rev. Arthur Taylor in the Grohse papers.

More About ALFRED GOINS:

Burial: Goins Chapel Cem., Hancock Co, TN

Notes for HANNAH GIBSON:

According to the Grohse papers, Hannah was the daughter of Betty Gibson. The date of Hannah's death is from a posting on the internet from a descendant of Alfred and Hannah's

More About HANNAH GIBSON:

Burial: Hancock Co, TN

Notes for MELVINA JOHNSON

Vina married her step-brother, Wilson Mullins, the son of her mother's 2nd husband. But Wilson was supposedly unkind to her, so they split. After Viney left Wilson, she was said to have walked over two mountains holding her baby son, Landon, to get back home. Vina then married Alfred Goins, an older Civil War vet whom she had known since she was a young girl, and raised a family. After Alfred died, Vina drew from his war pension. Alfred and Vina supposedly owned much of the land where Goins Chapel and cemetary now stand. Vina lived to a very good age, on the Panther Creek side of Newmans Ridge.

Notes for JAMES ABRAM GARFIELD GOINS:

One source, I believe the Will Grohse Papers, says that Garfield died unmarried in 1917, but I found this in an email from Arlee Gowen, Pres. of the Gowen Foundation, to the Rootsweb Melungeon email list;

"James A. Garfield Goins" and his wife Marjorie Goings, were living in Redfield, Arkansas in January, 1989, according to Louise Goins Richardson of Paragould, Arkansas who corresponded with them. James A. Garfield Goins died in Redfield in March 1989.

I don't know which source is right, but he would have been over 100 yrs old if he was living in 1989.
